Lt Governors of J&K -Ladakh appointed
Girish Chander Murmu, a senior IAS officer, appointed the first Lt Governor of
Jammu and Kashmir, six days ahead of the State becoming a union territory.
Murmu, 59, an IAS officer of 1985 batch, worked as Modi’s additional principle
secretary during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister.
The state’s third province -- Ladakh-- has been carved out as a separate Union
Territory. Former defence secretary R K Mathur was appointed the first Lt
Governor of strategically located Ladakh. The 65-year-old bureaucrat, belonging
to 1977 IAS batch, retired as chief information commissioner last year.
Article 370 of constitution gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir as a state
from 1954 to 31 October 2019.
The article was drafted in Part XXI of the Constitution: Temporary, Transitional
and Special Provisions.
3
This article, along with Article 35A, defined that the Jammu and Kashmir state's
residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship,
ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to residents of
other Indian states. As a result of this provision, Indian citizens from other states
could not purchase land or property in Jammu & Kashmir.
On 5 August 2019, the Government of India issued a constitutional order
superseding the 1954 order, and making all the provisions of the Indian
constitution applicable to Jammu and Kashmir based on the resolution passed in
both houses of India's parliament with 2/3 majority.
Following the resolutions passed in both houses of the parliament, he issued a
further order on 6 August declaring all the clauses of Article 370 except clause 1
to be inoperative.
In addition, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act was passed by the
parliament, enacting the division the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union
territories to be called Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union
Territory of Ladakh. The reorganisation took place on 31 October 2019.
On 5 August 2019, the Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Jammu and
Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha to convert Jammu and
Kashmir's status of a state to two separate union territories, namely Union
Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh. The union
territory of Jammu and Kashmir was proposed to have a legislature under the bill
whereas the union territory of Ladakh is proposed to not have one.
The two union territories came into existence on 31 October 2019, which was
celebrated as National Unity Day. The president of India appointed a Lt. Governor
for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and a Lt. Governor for the Union
Territory of Ladakh. Both the Lt. Governors were sworn in by Justice Gita Mittal,

vehicle manufacturers in India, becomes the first Indian OEM to meet the BS-VI
emission norms across the full range of heavy duty trucks.
Bharat stage emission standards (BSES) are emission standards instituted by the

The standards and the timeline for implementation are set by the Central

the regulations. Since October 2010, Bharat Stage (BS) III norms have been
enforced across the country.

already. The Quran established means to avoid hasty divorces. It prescribes two
waiting periods of three months before the divorce is final in order to give the
husband time to reconsider his decision. On 30 July 2019, Parliament of India
declared the practice of Triple Talaq as illegal, unconstitutional and made it
punishable act from 1 August 2019 which is deemed to be in effect from 19
September 2018.
Triple talaq, also known as talaq-e-biddat, instant divorce and talaq-e-
mughallazah (irrevocable divorce), was a form of Islamic divorce which has been
used by Muslims in India, especially adherents of Hanafi Sunni Islamic schools of
jurisprudence. It allowed any Muslim man to legally divorce his wife by uttering

What is a GI tag?
1. A geographical indication tag is used for an agricultural, natural or a
manufactured product (handicraft and industrial goods) originating from a
definite geographical territory.
21
2. Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness,
which is essentially attributable to the place of its origin.
3. According to experts, the tag gives protection to the producer of those
genuine products which command premium pricing in domestic as well as
international markets. "Once the GI protection is granted, no other
producer can misuse the name to market similar products. It also provides
comfort to customers about the authenticity of that product," National
Intellectual Property Organisation (NIPO) President TC James said.
4. Once a product gets this tag, no person or company can sell a similar item
under that name.
5. This tag is valid for a period of 10 years following which it can be renewed.
ADVERTISEMENT 6. GI is covered under a law of the World Trade
Organisation (WTO).
The first product to get a GI tag in India was the Darjeeling Tea in 2004. There
are a total of 345 products from India that carry this indication.

edge of space. The miniature satellite, measuring 4 cm x 4 cm x 4 cm, has been
designed by 17-year old Indian student Aabhaas Sikka, a young genius who
worked with SPACE organisation as an intern.
The experiment has been named RamanSat II in the honor of the Nobel prize-

satellite in a low earth orbit. It is an important step towards securing India's
59
safety, economic growth and technological advancement. No doubt ASAT weapon
system will give a new strength to India's space program.
India became the fourth country to acquire the capability of space warfare after
US, Russia and China. Scientists of India had successfully conducted Mission
Shakti by shooting down a live satellite in the low earth orbit (LEO).
Low earth orbit is an orbit within a locus extending from the surface of the earth
up to an altitude of 1,200 miles or 2000 km.
With the help of ASAT we can target and destroy satellites of the enemy that can
