World-class fiber optic networks are expensive to build, especially in more rural areas. Logan Telephone has invested more than $20 million in their FiberNet network since 2013 and will reach approximately 40% of members by the end of the year. Logan Telephone covers 596 square miles of Logan, Butler, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Simpson, Todd, and Warren counties. The faster speeds offered through FiberNet will keep people and small businesses connected as they are accessing more content on more devices. High-speed Internet has become as essential of a utility as water, power, and gas for education, healthcare, and economic development. Logan Telephone has a distinguished history as the Cooperative was the first telephone company in the state to provide high-speed Internet to 100 percent of its members as well as helping to bring excellent 4G wireless services to the area through its partnership in Bluegrass Cellular. General Manager Greg Hale stated, “Fiber is just the next step to make sure the Cooperative helps our community remain a leader in terms of economic development and quality of life for residents. We are proud to bring Gigabit services to our communities, which we believe are some of the best places in the world to live, work, start a business, and raise a family.” Many distinguished guests attended a special reception announcing the new service. State Representative Martha Jane King spoke about the impact that broadband can have on a community. “This is a road you don’t have to build to Logan County. This is a highway that doesn’t have to be paved. This brings the world to us and takes us to the world,” said Rep. King. She later added, “It is nice to watch a co-op do the things that they do best: invest in this community, be a good citizen of this community, and continually take their money and make Logan County a better place. I wish we had cooperatives everywhere to just show other corporate entities just what a good relationship is. This is one of the greatest accomplishments today.” The mayors of the three included cities were presented with plaques. Auburn Mayor Mike Hughes stated, “This is significant. Logan Telephone stepped out on a limb for this community. They are an excellent advocate for Logan County and this recent commitment will increase the ability for economic dollars to come into our community. This is yet another tool as a mayor I will definitely be using.” Logan Telephone is committed to expanding its world-class FiberNet network to reach as many homes and businesses as possible. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Hello Members! I’m writing this article on the morning of November 9 after very little sleep as I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to see who would be elected as our next President. Due to my involvement in advocating for our Cooperative over the years, I have turned into a close follower of politics. These elections have real impacts on our business and our members. When the political party of the presidential office changes, the majority party at the FCC changes. The makeup of Congress and the State House can restrict or ease the ability to change laws and regulations that affect us. It was obvious last night that we were seeing something like we have never seen before. Our Cooperative is a great example of how positive things can happen when people work together. My prayer is that our country finds a way to bridge the divides we see today and work together so that we can live up to our true potential. I pray that we become a bright light, a city on a hill, for the entire world.

We are in the middle of budget season and the uncertainty we are experiencing is very high. The FCC’s reforms passed earlier this year are hindering our ability to accurately plan as we would like. A few weeks ago, the FCC released new numbers on how their new Universal Service Budget Control Mechanism will work in the first half of 2017. The entire industry and even the FCC was surprised with how large the revenue reductions will be for companies like us.

As part of the reforms, the FCC also gave companies an option on how to receive support in the future. This support is the only way we can continue to invest in new fiber and keep prices as low as they are. Companies could choose legacy support and continue to receive support using a method similar to the approach used in the past, or companies could choose model support and receive support based on new formulas. The FCC set a budget of $150 million for all companies that chose model support thinking that would likely be enough to cover companies selecting the model. When all choices were finally made, there were over 274 companies that chose model support. The total model amount needed for these companies is $310 million, more than double the amount budgeted.

This just gives you a small view into what we deal with at the FCC. We must now wait again to see how the FCC will fix this budget mess they have created. It makes it extremely difficult to plan when they keep changing what our revenues will look like just a few months from now.

Despite these challenges, we continue to do our best. We are finalizing estimates for our next fiber builds. We are beginning to put together the material to apply for necessary financing with a goal of reaching as many customers with fiber as possible. Our current financial strength puts us in a good position to meet all these challenges, and we have a very strong team here working each day to improve the Cooperative and the services we offer. We appreciate your membership and your investment in the Cooperative. We look forward to continuing to work TOGETHER to improve the quality of life in our communities.

In-TouchCooperative Membership Really Pays OffBeing a member of Logan Telephone Cooperative is really a wonderful thing! You not only can receive high-speed Internet wherever you live, great telephone service, and are actually able to talk with a person when you call the office...but you also get cash back! Most businesses don’t work that way. As a member of a cooperative, you are also an owner...and ownership includes benefits.

Each year that Logan Telephone has an allocable margin, the margin is allocated to each member based on the amount of business the member did with the Cooperative. When the Board determines that the financial needs of the Cooperative have been met, they may approve distributions of capital credits.

This year the Board at Logan Telephone approved a distribution of $350,000. This marks the 23rd straight year that the Cooperative has been able to give a distribution to its members. A total of over $11.5 million has been paid back to members over the life of the Cooperative.

This year’s capital credit checks were mailed mid-October. All members that had service from 1996-2015 should have received a distribution unless the amount was lower than $2.50.

Always remember to notify us of any address change. Your allocations remain with the Cooperative even if you are no longer a member, and we will need to know your location for any future distributions.

A cooperative is truly a unique business. When Logan Telephone Cooperative makes a profit, you’ve just made a profit. Everyone has a stake in the success of a cooperative. We hope you take pride in being a member of Logan Telephone Cooperative!

If you have any questions, please give us a call at 270-542-4121 or 270-934-4121.
