The LTE Broadcast Opportunity
• LTE: Hundreds of confirmed network roll outs and connected
devices
– More than 250 commercial LTE networks rolled out by end of 2013
– More than 150 million LTE devices by end of 2013
– The following operators have alreay announced the launch of eMBMS
for 2014-2015: Verizon, AT&T, Kt, Reliance
– As a natural extension for LTE, LTE Broadcast will be supported by a
majority of networks and devices
• A committed ecosystem
– On the server side: Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Huawei
have announced the support of LTE Broadcast solutions
– On the terminal side: Qualcomm, Huawei, Sequans, Altair have
announced the support of LTE Broadcast in their LTE Modems

Lowell McAdam said he wanted Verizon to offer live broadcast TV over
4G LTE - a goal that might allow for the airing of the Super Bowl over its
network in the “2014 timeframe”
PCMAG.COM reporting on Verizon CEO keynote speech at CES 2013
“We believe that LTE Broadcast will become a key component in addressing
the exponential growth in mobile multimedia and application download
traffic” Peggy Johnson, President of Global Market Development
Fast-Growing Support in the Ecosystem
“There is strong demand by operators for LTE Broadcast technology and it
is important that mobile operators have a global and mature ecosystem”
Alain Biston, LTE Business Unit Vice President

"AT&T's focus is now almost all about architecting networks to deliver
video and that will be where AT&T will spend the most capital over the
next three years. AT&T is developing a ‘broadcast capability’ to remove
video traffic from its wide-area wireless networks.“
Randall L. Stephenson, CEO
LTE Broadcast is Strategic for MNOs
• To optimize network ressources when the same content – is accessed by several users at the same time (live TV)
– Is downloaded by numerous users in a short time (OS upgrades, newspapers, etc)
– can be preloaded instead of being accessed real-time (highly popular videos, …)
• To solve technical limitations of unicast networks – When concentration of users forbids the use of extensive unicast (stadiums,
venues…)
• To enable new services – Localized push (news, advertising, coupons…)
– 24/7 updates of eMagazines
– Emergency alerts

Some
LTE Broadcast Activities

December 2013
• RJIL owns a nation-wide spectrum for 4G
• Intends to be the first operator to offer nationwide
quadruple play in India:
• Including voice, video, data and mobile services
• Video offering to include Live TV and Push VOD,
for fixed and mobile devices
• LTE allows to deploy the services far more efficiently in
areas where e.g. cable is difficult, slow and expensive
to build
• Roll-out and commercial launch starting in Mumbai,
Delhi and Jamnagar, in 2014 (~30 million people)
• Target: 37 million 4G wireless subscribers in four
years

Nationwide Quadruple Play
Verizon: NFL, Superbowl and Beyond
NFL app will be the first LTE Broadcast Service in the world:
• Verizon has the rights for the content, which supports their role as a major sports sponsor
• VZW has a content deal with NFL; for four years starting 2014
Subscribers will be able to access:
• All playoff games
• Home-market feeds of NFL games
• The Super Bowl
• Local games produced by CBS and Fox
• NFL Network content (more than 4,000 hours)
• NFL RedZone content (touchdowns etc. highlights)
• All above included in monthly subscription, $5 / month
• Verizon has defined a multi-app framework
• Separate apps for e.g. NFL, NHL, etc. content

« Verizon aims to offer live broadcast TV over 4G LTE and to air the
Super Bowl over its network in 2014. » Lowell McAdam, CEO
• Mobile TV Service is quite popular:
• For example in France: 1,5 million active subs for a single operator
• It is available at both 3G and WiFi, and 60% are viewing it over 3G / 40% at home over
wifi, despite the poor video quality in densely populated areas
• Operators have built partnerships with several publishing houses and radio networks
• Operators are looking for differentiating services using LTE Broadcast
• According to the studies LTE Broadcast will add value to these following services:
• Live TV – to increase the quality of the service
• Sport Events – to make sure that the network matches the audience demand
• eMagazines delivery – to deliver highly responsive user experience
• Radio – to replace FM radio and to add extra pay services
