LTE expressMOVE FAST AND OUTCOMPETE

Meet user expectations Once you embark on your transition to LTE,

you’ll want to make sure your network can

meet the ever-increasing service expectations

of your subscribers.

Enabled by powerful smartphones and tablets,

subscribers now expect anywhere, anytime

access to bandwidth-hungry applications.

Whether they are sitting at a local café, soaking

up a concert, or cheering their favorite team

at a nearby stadium, subscribers want high

quality, rich multimedia experiences at

their fingertips.

Unfortunately, these expectations can put a

strain on portions of your macro cell network.

To avoid the prohibitively expensive

cost of new macro cell deployments,

you’ll need a cost-effective way to

get more capacity in areas with

the heaviest traffic.

With Alcatel-Lucent LTE

express, you can optimize

your LTE network to deliver

more macro capacity and

deploy cost-effective metro

cells to increase capacity

in urban hotspots and in

indoor locations where

macro cells can’t go.

Deploy capacity where it is needed• Mobile data to grow by over 6x between

2013 and 2018 (Source: Analysis Mason)

• The number of LTE subscribers is

expected to hit 1 billion by 2017

(Source: Strategy Analytics)

• US LTE subscribers will make up

70% of all connections by 2017

Carry and deliver moreOf course, getting all that traffic on your

network is only half the battle. The real

challenge is making sure the network is

configured to deliver it efficiently.

With Alcatel-Lucent LTE express advanced

radio modules and next generation baseband

units (BBUs), you get more coverage and

capacity from each of your macro sites.

Alcatel-Lucent Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) and

Transmit Receive Duplexer Units (TRDUs) are

high power and multiple input and multiple

output (MIMO) ready. Four-way receive

diversity (Rx) further improves coverage, while

support for up to eight transmit and eight

receive antennas on some models doubles

site capacity. And our ultra-wideband

RRHs provide higher throughput with

up to 65 MHz of bandwidth today,

growing to more in the future.

Our high capacity BBU supports

up to nine cells and 5,000

connected users. It uses an

advanced scheduler based

on Bell Labs algorithms that

delivers 60% more

throughput and 40%

higher cell edge gain than

standard schedulers. And it

is ready to optimize your

subscribers’ voice over

LTE (VoLTE) experience

with semi-persistent

scheduling.

Get more capacity to your macro sites• High power radios (60 W RRHs

and 2x80 W TRDUs)

• 2x capacity increase with our

8 Tx and 8 Rx RRH

• 6x capacity increase with

next-generation BBUs

• 60% capacity increase with

advanced scheduler features

LTE expressMOVE FAST AND OUTCOMPETE

Provide higher peak and user data ratesTo add massive capacity to your network, you’ll

have to get the most out of your LTE spectrum.

The upper limit of bandwidth established

for LTE Release 8 and 9 is 20 MHz. But with

Alcatel-Lucent LTE express ultra-wideband

radios and LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation

(LTE-A CA) techniques, you can leverage all

your spectrum assets to deliver higher peak

and user data rates and capacity. This makes it

easier to enhance the user experience for your

subscribers with rich multimedia applications,

whether you have higher or lower frequency

band spectrum allocations.

If your allocation is in the

higher bands, you probably

have more than 20 MHZ of

contiguous spectrum. With

CA you can use your full

spectrum allocation and

even pool additional

spectrum assets.

If your spectrum is in the

lower bands, you probably

have much narrower blocks

of spectrum. With CA, you

can pool your spectrum resources

together to achieve 20 MHz or

more of bandwidth.

Optimize your network with carrier aggregation• With LTE-A CA, a carrier of up to 100 MHz

can be created, with the data rate scaling

with the bandwidth:

• 40 MHz (2X2 MIMO) = 300 mbps

• 100 MHz (2X2 MIMO) = 750 mbps

• 100 MHz (4X4 MIMO) = 1 Gbps

Deploying LTE and Wi-Fi small cells within the same site significantly increases capacity

LTE Small Cell

Wi-Fi

LTE expressMOVE FAST AND OUTCOMPETE

Boost capacity in urban hotspots cost-effectivelyThere are three ways you can increase the

capacity of your network to meet ever-

increasing traffic demands: add more spectrum,

make the spectrum you have more efficient

and increase spatial efficiency.

Unfortunately, spectrum is scarce, expensive

and there is only 2x more spectrum in the

pipeline. Deploying all future LTE Advanced

technologies to increase spectral efficiency will

only increase capacity by a factor of 1.5. But,

increasing the spatial efficiency of the network

with small cells can provide as much as a

tenfold increase in network capacity.

An Alcatel-Lucent LTE express deployment

of small cells in key network hotspots can

significantly increase the capacity of your

network, so you can deliver the advanced

services your subscribers demand, anytime

and anywhere.

Deploying just three LTE small cells per macro

cell doubles network capacity. Combining

LTE small cells with carrier Wi-Fi® small cells

delivers even more capacity.

For example, deploying three multi-standard

small cells per macro site — a combination

of LTE and carrier Wi-Fi cells — triples the

capacity of your network.

On their own, LTE small cells can cut your cost

per bit in half compared to equivalent macro

cell technology. But when integrated with

carrier Wi-Fi small cells, the cost reductions

are more dramatic. Research shows that the

cost per bit of a carrier Wi-Fi integrated LTE

small cell is less than a one-quarter of the

cost of deploying the technologies separately

(source: Small-cell TCO: optimization strategies,

December 3, 2012, Senza Fili Consulting).

Increase network efficiency• Gain 10x capacity by increasing spatial

efficiency with small cells

• Just 3 LTE small cells per macro site, can

double capacity

• Just 3 LTE and carrier Wi-Fi integrated small

cells per macro site can triple capacity

LTE expressMOVE FAST AND OUTCOMPETE

Get more performance from your HetNetHetNets built with small cells provide a big leap

in network performance. But what if you could

optimize that performance without adding

any more small cells or additional spectrum

to improve capacity, coverage and the quality

of your users’ experience, both on macro and

small cells? With Alcatel-Lucent LTE express

you can take advantage of LTE Advanced

features, Cell Range Extension (CRE) and

Enhanced Inter Cell Interference Coordination

(eICIC) to do just that.

Cell range extension works by extending the

coverage footprint of small cells, allowing more

users to be better served by each small cell. By

offloading more users from the macro network,

CRE also frees up macro resources that can be

used to better serve macro users.

Bell Labs simulations show

that increasing the cell coverage

area by using 3 dBs increases

cell border gain by 15%

and spectral efficiency by

17%. Increasing it by

15 dBs improves cell border

throughput gain by 140% and

spectral efficiency by 28%.

But, as you increase the

coverage area of small

cells, you also get greater

interference with neighboring

macro cells, which can

severely limit your capacity

gain. With eICIC advanced

interference management,

you can cancel interference

between macro and small

cells by coordinating

how resources are used

between them to achieve

CRE capacity gains.

Use CRE and eICIC• Gain up to 75% in small cell

border throughput

• Gain up to 23% in spectral efficiency

Get ready for videoRegardless of the techniques applied to manage

uploads and downloads, every network must

still find a way to address the demands on

capacity placed by video services.

Video requires more bandwidth than any

other application on a network, so it must

be managed properly to ensure it does not

overload your network. Alcatel-Lucent LTE

express makes it easy for you to leverage

Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast

Service (EMBMS) to stretch your network

capacity even further.

Typically, end user devices requesting the same

video content over a network will receive that

content over separate video streams. EMBMS

enables multicast capabilities in the network so

that the same content can be sent to multiple

subscribers at the same time.

By multicasting the content to multiple

subscribers simultaneously, network capacity

is used more efficiently and the cost

of delivering the content is reduced.

The more users the multicast reaches,

the greater the cost reduction,

since multicast uses the same

bandwidth to reach one or

multiple users.

This technique can be

used to reduce the cost

of distributing live content,

such as concerts and

sporting events, to large

audiences. It can also be

used for the delivery of

applications and content,

such as news and weather.

Enable multicasting to create bandwidth efficiencies• Can Serve 1000s of subscriber

simultaneously with premium content

• Ensure more efficient use of

available spectrum

• Lower cost per bit for content delivery
