THE HISTORYo 1G (Early 1980s)
o – Analog speech communications
o 2G (Early 1990s)– Digital speech communications.– TDMA and narrowband CDMA.– Ex: GSM
o 3G (Late 1990s)– Global harmonization and roaming.– Wideband CDMA– Ex: UMTS

BEYOND 3G
o 3G Partnership Project is currently developing evolutionary/ revolutionary systems beyond 3G– 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE)
o IEEE 802.16-based WiMAX is also evolving towards 4G through 802.16m
![Page 5: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
INTRODUCTION OF LTE
o Peak data rate– 100 Mbps DownLink, 50 Mbps Uplink within 20
MHz bandwidth.– Up to 200 active users in a cell (5 MHz).
o Mobility– Optimized for 0 ~ 15 km.– 15 ~ 120 km/h supported with high
performance.– Supported up to 350 km/h or even up to 500
km/h.o Spectrum flexibility: 1.25 ~ 20 MHz.

![Page 8: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
LTE ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES
o Two main technologies
1. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)
2. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO)
![Page 9: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
WHAT OFDM ? o The subcarriers are orthogonal to each other and can
be overlap.
o OFDM is suitable for multi path fading and high data rate.

MULTIPLE-INPUT MULTIPLE-OUTPUT (MIMO)
o MIMO provides high data rate, better cell coverage
without increasing bandwidth.
o SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO are types of MIMO system.
![Page 12: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
REQUIREMENTS FOR LTE-ADVANCED (LTE-A)
o LTE-A shall have same or better performance than LTE
o Peak data rate Downlink: 1 Gbps, Uplink: 500 Mbps
o Same requirements as LTE for mobility, coverage, synchronization, spectrum flexibility etc
![Page 13: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
LTE-A TECHNOLOGY PROPOSALS
o MIMO enhancements
o Cooperative multi-site transmission
o Repeaters and relays
![Page 14: lte ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082623/5409f753dab5ca25318b48a6/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
CONCLUSION
o Mass deployment to begin around 2012.
o Devices which are covered under LTE are – Mobile phones, laptops, cameras etc.
o Assured easy use with older wireless technologies such as GSM, WCDMA/HSPA, CDMA, TD-SCDMA.
