  • LTE in re-farming spectrum : The 1800 MHz Case • Widespread Allocation

    – More than 350 operators are estimated to have been allocated 1800 MHz spectrum

    – Today 1800 MHz is mainly used for voice (GSM) service – GSM voice traffic is peaking/reducing; data traffic is growing exponentially – 1800 MHz is a prime band for LTE international roaming

    • Large Spectrum – In many markets 1800 MHz represents the largest spectrum allocation – 60% of 1800 MHz spectrum in the top 7 EU markets (*) is available in 10

    MHz or wider assignments – 1800 MHz band is harmonized, non-fragmented, and often only partially-

    utilized

    • Technical Advantages – Coverage area is about 2X larger than LTE2.6GHz with better indoor

    penetration. – 35% improvement in cell edge throughput compared to LTE2.6GHz. – Reduction of Extra sites results in quick delivery of the LTE to market.

    Providing initial widespread coverage with LTE in the 1800 MHz band can be as much as 60% cheaper than covering the same area with LTE using higher frequency bands

    – Reuse of existing GSM1800 sites and possibly share antenna systems

    • Ecosystem Readiness – 1800 MHz RF components now available in volume production from

    multiple vendors – 14 commercial LTE1800 networks launched
