Welcom e and Resources
Welco me to LTLE 370! In this c lass, you w ill use m od ern tec hno logies to p lan, p rod uc e, and ed it
multimed ia p rod uc ts used for tea ching a nd lea rning. As a b asis for our work, we w ill explore the
field of instruc tional tec hnology (a lso c alled educ at ional tec hnology), and the relationship
betw een how p eople learn and t he d esign of instruc tional med ia. You will have the op po rtunity
to d evelop ne w produc ts and pa rtic ipa te in pee r reviews.
In a dd ition to learning how to use tec hnolog ies, instruc tional tec hnologists wo rk hard to analyze
and solve problem s both indep end ently and c ollabo rat ively. They ap prec iate the deta ils and
“ how to” information a lmost a s muc h a s the c rea tive proc ess of d esigning new , instruc tional
interventions. With e xpe rience and reflec tion, instruc tional te c hnologists beg in to develop a
persona l philosop hy o f p rop er design.
Althoug h lea rners enter this course w ith va rying deg rees of te c hnica l skill, all ca n b e suc c essful in
the end . Those w ho a re most suc c essful co nsisten tly demo nstrate c rea tivity, prob lem solvingskills, resilienc e, and a tte ntiveness during instruc tion. To maximize your lea rning expe rienc e in this
c ourse, impleme nt p rac tices tha t help avoid d istrac tions, find a c onsistent, q uiet wo rkspac e in
which to a ttend a ll sync hronous sessions, a ttend office hours, and try to solve p rob lems
indep end ently be fore a sking for help. Eac h of these stra teg ies will make for a m ore enjoyable
and meaningful sem ester.
This c ourse w ill cha lleng e you to lea rn new softw a re skills and to c onsider how to d esign e ffec tive
tea c hing and learning expe rience s in fac e-to-fac e a nd o nline environme nts. By the end of the

c ourse, you will have a ba sic und erstand ing of how to ed it imag ery, design a we bsite, c rea te
instruct iona l p resenta tions, and produc e a nd ed it digita l aud io and video. These skills a re
typically transferrable to the w orkplac e. You w ill be expec ted to synthesize w hat you know into
an elec tronic p ortfolio that ma y be o f interest to p otential emp loyers.
This is a “ ha nds-on” c ourse tha t requires your ac tive p a rticipa tion. It is about making and do ing
rather than passively listening and observing. For this reason, attendanc e a nd pa rticipa tion are
mandatory. Attend c lass sessions p rep ared to lea rn and c rea te. Ma ke sure yo ur c ourse m a terials
a re a c c essible during ea c h c lass.
Given the rap id rate of em erging tec hnologies, the need to q uickly test a nd evaluate
app lic a tions for educ a tiona l use is signific ant. The stud y of instructiona l techno logy is an ong oing
p roc ess. There is never a dull mo ment! Perhap s this w ill be the beg inning of your lifelong stud y of
em erging tec hnolog ies for lea rning.
Since this c lass is on line , we will use Ellumina te , ac c essible v ia our Blac kboa rd (Bb) course.
Ellumina te ena bles us to eng age in a ud io d isc ussions, cha ts, file sha ring, p resenta tion d elivery,
whiteb oa rd ac tivities, and collabo rat ion via b rea kout rooms. We will meet synchronously
throughout the sem ester with a numb er of a sync hronous sessions interspersed to a llow for
individua l workda ys. As such, you a re expec ted to wo rk through the ma teria l and assignments at
an a pp rop riate pa c e on your own in orde r to me et c ourse d ea dlines.
This c ourse d oe s no t ha ve a req uired textbook. You w ill, how eve r, nee d the following resources:
1. A headset with microphone, suc h a s the Mic rosoft LifeCha t LX-1000, is req uired in orde r to
interac t in sync hronous c lass sessions via Ellumina te or to rec ord a ud io in Ad ob e
Presente r. You m a y also find the hea dset useful during the vide o p rojec t a nd a t othe r
points during the sem ester. This devic e should be in-ha nd by the sec ond c lass session. If
your persona l com p uter is eq uippe d with built-in spe akers and a microphone , you m ay
elec t to use this op tion. How ever, plea se keep in mind that you will need to a ttend
synchronous c lass sessions in a quiet a rea to avoid unnec essary ba c kground noise from
d isrup ting c lass. Befo re the first c lass session, setup your mic rop hone and p layb ac k aud io
leve ls by going to Bb > Ellum inate > Session Na me > Too ls > Aud io > Aud io Setup Wiza rd
and follow the instructions.
2. An 8GB or large r SanDisk USB drive or external drive ma y b e useful for storing c ourse files
for use o n multiple c om puters. In lieu o f purcha sing a d rive, you ma y conside r usingonline servic es for cloud sto rage suc h as Go og le Drive, Dropbox, or Sug a rSync . Please
keep in mind that t hese servic es a ll offe r pa id a nd free versions w ith varying t erms of
servic e tha t should b e read entirely be fore a greeing t o use the servic e.
3. Having a n 8GB SanDisk mem ory c ard ma y also b e he lpful to you, pa rticularly during the
video p rojec t, be c ause the c am eras we use store vide o in this forma t. This purcha se ma y
not b e nec essary if you have the ap propriate ca bles to c onnec t the c am era d irec tly to
your c om puter to transfer files.
4. The Ado be CS6 and Adobe Presenter softw are pac kages will be used throug hout the
c ourse to c rea te m any of the assignment s. There a re three o pt ions by which you ma y
ob ta in ac c ess to the softwa re: (1) one of the co mputer lab s on c amp us with ap plic ations
insta lled – note tha t no t a ll labs have a ll softwa re ap p lic ations or the most rec ent version
insta lled , (2) download a tria l version of CS6 and Presenter 8 on your persona l c om pute r – not e tha t the tria l versions a re o nly valid fo r 30 days, (3) pu rcha se a stud ent lic ense o f
CS6 through the JMU boo ksto re. NOTE: If you o p t to dow nload a tria l version or purc ha se
the softw are, plea se selec t the Design & Web Prem ium version.
5. JMU Libra ry resources will be required throughout the sem ester. If you p lan to acc ess
these resources from an off-c amp us loc a tion, you w ill need to first log in to set up a VPN.

Principles and proc ed ures of a tea c hing/ learning p roc ess d esigned to p rovide reliab le, effec tive
instruction to learners through systematic application of instructional technology. Includes
selec ting, produc ing, eva luating and utilizing non-print med ia and eq uipmen t for ap p lic ation to
the instruct iona l p roc ess.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is for lea rners to develop c om pe tenc ies that will enable them to
system at ica lly p lan for the selec tion, utilization, and eva luat ion of instruc tional me d ia a nd to
reflec t on and design for the lea rning p roc ess. The suc c essful comp letion o f the c ourse should
result in the a c quisition o f reflec tive dec ision-ma king a nd prob lem solving skills, and technica l
skills.

promptly by the d ue da te a nd in the expec ted forma t. Work not submitted o n the spe c ified due
dat e, and in the expec ted forma t, will lose the eq uivalent o f a full letter grad e (ex. highest
possible sc ore b ec om es a B instead of a n A). If an assignment is submitted 7 da ys late or in a n
incorrec t forma t, the equivalent o f two letter grades will be ded uc ted . Assignments rec eived 8
or more d ays after the due da te w ill be a ssigned a “ 0”.
