The Luang Prabang Film Festival is the perfect occasion to experience both ancient and contempo-rary Lao culture – present alms to the saffron-clad monks at dawn, explore centuries-old Buddhist temples, and then join LPFF for premier entertainment from the artists at the forefront of Southeast Asian cinema.

The Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF) is an annual celebration of filmmaking in Southeast Asia with an additional aim of educating Lao people about film as a means of cultural expression and commu-nication, while supporting a nascent local industry and art form. LPFF is one of the largest regular non-religious events in Laos, and the only major festival in the world that solely focuses on Southeast Asian cinema. Best of all, every single one of LPFF’s screenings and activities is free and open to the public, and thus, they average 20,000 attendees to their events each year!

Day 1: Arrive in Luang Prabang (-/L/-)

Meet upon arrival at the Luang Prabang airport. Transfer and check into the hotel. The crown jewel of Laos and former Lanexang, Luang Prabang is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in South-east Asia. Magical and charming, it has preserved its long-standing reputation as a stronghold of Lao culture with its splendid natural scenery and sense of timelessness. In 1995, UNESCO voted Luang Prabang as a World Heritage City.

In the afternoon, visit Vat Visoun, the site of an impressive stupa, and That Makmo, stylistically more Srilankalese than Lao. Then, walk to the nearby Vat Aham, which is one of the city’s major tutelary shrines, dedicated to Deveta Luang (spirit) Pu Gneu Ya Gneu (ancestors). Climb Vat Phousi Hill for an outstanding view over the city. Continue to visit Vat Mai, built in 1796, famous for the five-tiered roof of its wooden sim built in the standard of Luang Prabang style. Finally, visit the Night Market.

Day 2: Luang Prabang Film Festival (B/-/-)

In the morning, rise early and participate in the daily early morning ritual of giving offerings to saf-fron-clad monks with their black alms bowls, including the ubiquitous sticky rice. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Then visit Vat Xieng Thong, considered the most beautiful temple. The Vat represents the classic Luang Prabang temple architecture with roofs that sweep low to the ground. In the com-pound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Near the East gate stands the Royal Funeral Chapel. Inside is an impressive 12-meter high funeral chariot and various funeral urns of each Royal Family member. The gilt panel on the exterior of the chapel depicts a semi-erotic episode from Ramayana.

For the rest of the day, enjoy film screenings, panel discussions, and cultural performances at the 9th Luang Prabang Film Festival. As one of the biggest non-religious events in Laos, the festival trans-forms the small, mountainous town into a hot-spot for Southeast Asian art. Film screenings take place at LPFF’s Day Venue (Sofitel Luang Prabang) at 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, and 4 PM. At LPFF’s night venue (the Handicraft Market), watch feature films at 7 PM and 9 PM.
