Lucan calling! Lucan calling! Lucan S t Mary’s is going high-tech with our very own Church Broadcasting system. This means that we will be able to broadcast our own Church Services to the parish. A special FM transmitter is fitted in the Church and is linked to the P. A. system in the parish. The church signal can be received on a special radio unit, which can be bought for about £30. It is designed for the sick and housebound of the parish. It will be the very popular St. Mary’s clergy who will be heard over the airwaves. The signal is limited to about 2 miles, and there may be pockets where the signal might not get through. Our hope is to launch the system for Palm Sunday, so that those who are too ill to leave their homes can hear all of the Easter Services. The radio receivers themselves can be used for other stations, but it’s probably better to leave them for the Church Services as it may be a bit of a chore to find the St. Mary’s Station signal. Another idea that might work, is to leave one of the units in one of the rooms in the Parish Centre, so that if your young child is upset in the church and you have to pop out for a moment, then you can drop into the Centre and keep an ear to the Mass. And when it is ‘safe’ to return to the church you will know how far Mass has progressed. So, if you are housebound, or just want to keep in touch with Church Services, this is the answer we’ve all been waiting for. Just contact one of the Priests and we can order the radios. As I said above, we hope to launch the system for Easter, so do think about the idea soon. The whole idea of the system is that the broadcast should be that of ‘normal’ Church Services. So don’t expect the St Mary’s Clergy or Lay Readers to put on their Radio voices! As ‘Gaybo’ bows out, others were bound to fill the gap. Fr. Philip Bradley (Wired for sound).

So don’t expect the S t Mary’s Clergy or Lay Readers to put on their Radio voices!

As ‘Gaybo’ bows out, others were bound to fill the gap.

Fr. Philip Bradley (Wired for sound).

Dear Editor,

New Year BabyI refer to your Newsletter of Sunday last, 10 January and see that I have lost my title of Lucan New Year Baby after twenty-five years. I congratulate Mr and Mrs Hill on their new arrival and gladly hand over the title, which was beginning to weigh heavily on me!

My family moved from Lucan to Naas in 1985, where we still reside. I work at Dublin Airport in banking there.

I attended the Convent Primary School in Lucan until 1985 and have very happy memories of my time there. I send best wishes to my former classmates and teachers, particularly Sr. John Bosco and Mrs Griffin.

Yours Sincerely,Aim Marie Moran

Editor’s comment: Thank you Ann Marie for contacting us. We hope you won’t mind us burdening you with further fame by printing the photograph carried by Lucan Newsletter in 1974.

last edition who took exception to the publication of my recent letter (Newsletter,Dec 20th 1998; when I was critical of unfounded and gratuitous criticism of men in general), I urge them to review the facts.Mr Kinder claimed my remarks contributed nothing positive to ‘community responsibility5 but to the contrary, my letter highlighted the need for responsibility and for all of us to think carefully before making unfounded, generalised, criticisms. No criticism was made by me of the speaker’s VDP (Vincent de Paul) work or her courage. I believe her total contribution to Lucan & society to be good and positive but this does not justify her unfounded and hurtful words. It would be a sad day for our society if entry to a pulpit provided carte blanche to say what one liked about neighbours * without any possibility of a response. (*in the Christian sense that we are all each others neighbour). It is hardly reasonable to suggest that a VDP person speaking from the pulpit is part of the Liturgy of the Mass; s/he is an invited guest addressing the congregation from an eminent place and seeking support for a good cause. The second letter was riddled with inaccuracies and petulant asides: e.g., l a m a regular reader of the Newsletter. What difference does age make, is older better or worse than middle-aged? I do know the name o f the VDP speaker in question but my letter was intended as a critique of what was said, of the damaging words used, not the individual who used them - thus I saw no need to provide a name. Unlike Ms Dennehy, I believe we are entitled to privacy and should not have our name bandied about in public, unless we seek it ourselves. Her snide description of me as ‘Mr. No-Name5 and the malign question posed about ‘being afraid of my neighbours’ are quite deplorable; unpleasant examples of

personalised vilification and unworthy of the Newsletter. In summary, I applaud all who contribute positively to our community, in whatever way. But, I believe we can all, even if rarely, be guilty o f misjudgement and, if so, need not go unchallenged. It is, I believe, very significant that the writers did not contradict the facts presented in my letter.? When people cannot deny stated facts but act to prevent publication of, or debate on, those facts such action is not less than intolerance and/or censorship,Yours in Christian democracy,Eamon Brennan

Editor’s note: We will not cany anyfurther correspondence on this topic.

DEMOCRACY - WHAT DEMOCRACY?

Obviously the voice o f the people are not being listened to. Last year the people objected to McDonald’s getting planning permission to open at the Superquinn Shopping Centre, Lucan. Now McDonalds have taken it a step further and gone to An Bord Pleanala- Bord Pleanala consists of eight people, and it’s these eight people who voted in favour of McDonald’s.Democracy just doesn’t exist in this country - or does it for certain people?

“He was a young father, wheeling the pram through the gardens while the baby was crying. ‘Take it easy, Jack,’ he said calmly. ‘There’s nothing to worry about.’A middle-aged woman noticed his soothing manner. When the baby cried even louder she heard him say, ‘Cool it, Jack, don’t get excited, lad, cool it, son.’The woman leaned into the pram and said: ‘There, there Jack, what’s bothering you?’ ‘Excuse me, lady,’ said the father, ‘that’s Jeremy. I’m Jack.’

This means that the eleven pupils who participated worked through Christmas to put the finishing touches to their projects. All projects were well received. President McAleese especially visited Lydia Monds and Maeve Purcell, whose project on Deaf Technology was of great interest to her as her brother is deaf. The Seaweed Project of Catriona Carrig, Aisling Owens and Lisa Smyth was Highly Commended. Remember this when in future years, we start to bum seaweed to provide heat. Aoife Doran, Nicole Hone and Susan Furness visited numerous beaches in Co. Dublin, tested the water quality and recommend Portmamock as your summer location. Margaret Etherson and Julie Murtagh stayed closer to home, looking at the water quality in the Liffey, a most interesting read Finally our Junior entry of Bronagh O’Neill and Nuala Rooney compared Diet and Nutrition in primary and secondary schools. We should also mention that Bronagh won the Irish Times Crossword competition. Congratulations Bronagh. Many thanks to the Science Teachers involved, Margaret Wyer, Mary Creane, Geraldine Lyons and Diane Cannon. LUCAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

10

Annual General MeetingOur AGM takes place on Monday 25m January at 8 pm in the Methodist hall in Lucan Village. This meeting provides residents with an ideal opportunity to hear about the many and varied activities undertaken by the Community Council over the past year. All residents are urged to show their support for this ongoing work by attending the meeting.

LaraghconNo sooner is one threat to the Liffey Valley defeated than another appears, or in this case reappears. Last June, An Bord Pleanala made a ruling refusing permission for the building of 355 houses at Laraghcon. This decision was welcomed by the vast majority of Lucan residents. In March 1997 we held a Referendum, in which 97.4% of the 2,425 people who turned out, voted against the proposal.Within the last number of weeks the developer has lodged a new, slightly different, proposal to build 355 houses on this same site overlooking the Liffey Valley. We continue to oppose this development due to the concerns expressed to us by residents in relation to the previous proposal. It is imperative that people write to Fingal County Council as soon as possible and voice their opinion on this proposal which would have devastating effects on the Village and the Liffey Valley.Correspondence should be forwarded to:The Planning Department,Fingal County Council,46 Upper O ’Connell St.,Dublin 1Quoting application reference F98A/1250. Fintan McCarthy,(Hon.Sec./PRO)

Beech Park & Beech Grove Residents Assoc.Would committee members please note that our first meeting of the new year will take place on Monday, 18th January, in St.Mary’s Parish Centre at 8pm. We look forward to a full attendance.Derek Keating, Chairman.

Church Unity Week begins on Monday 18th January. There will be an Ecumenical Service in S t Andrew’s Church of Ireland at 3pm on Sunday next 24th January at 3 o’clock. It is hoped that there will be a full attencance.

CHURCH UNITY WEEKThe Ecumenical Group in Lucan thought it would be appropriate if, at this time, the different Christian Denominations would contribute a message through the Newsletter. We are printing below the first two of these.

Presbyterians - for change!

Anyone wandering into the Lucan Presbyterian Church on a Sunday morning at 10am might be surprised The folk who have gathered for worship are mostly young and appear enthusiastic. The building itself is simple but has a warm feeling with its light wooden ceiling, upholstered seating and wall to wall carpeting. The cross is the focal point. The music is comtemporary in style and most of the liturgy is projected on to a screen. When it’s all over a trolley is wheeled in with hot tea and coffee for all. Well, this is hardly what people expect when they think of dour and humourless Presbyterians.

We may not be traditional in LPC except for one thing, our desire to be the people of the W ord The bible is really important to us. It is for us, the Word of God and our final authority for what we believe and how we are to behave. But it’s not primarily a book o f rules. We are

r-

Page 11: Lucan calling! Lucan calling! - South Dublin Libraries

Jesus Christ. The bible is the book which tells H us about Jesus. It’s also where, by his Spirit, we hear his word for today. So, when we gather for worship we expect Jesus to meet with us and to speak his word, as the bible is read and taught At this point worship is like being on a roller coaster, it’s scary and exciting at the same time. When he speaks it’s not just with words but with power and relevance. It will change your life.

Trevor Morrow.

I f we cannot as y e t think alike in all things, a t least we m ay love alike. H erein we cannot possib ly do amiss. He goes on to suggest that Christians should aim not to think, speak or do anything hurtful against each other, but should try to help each other on “in whatever we are agreed leads to the kingdom”.Good to see how the people of Lucan follow Wesley’s advice!!

Rosemary Lindsay

CHRISTIAN UNITY(from a Methodist Perspective!)

%Lucan is a wonderful place to have been sent to minister. People are so open and friendly, and it’s really easy here to be what a Methodist is supposed to be, “a friend of all and an enemy of none.” Here there seems to be that unity of spirit and purpose which must be the way forward for all Christians eventually. It’s not about worshipping together simply because it’s “That Week In January” . It’s not even about doing things together just for the sake of it. It’s all about love.“is thine heart right, as m ine is w ith thy heart?... I f it be, g ive me thine hand. ”The above was a text John Wesley first preached on in the 1740’s! The title of the sermon was “Catholic Spirit” . What Wesley says in the sermon is that, while the Christian should remain firmly rooted in his/her own congregation, and remain steadily fixed to his own religious principles and to the truth as he understands it (in other words obeying his own conscience), he can love and accept people from all other Christian traditions (who are also obeying their own consciences) because for all of them the real nitty gritty is the same: they all believe in the one God, and in Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. At a time when there was no love lost between Protestant and Catholic, Wesley wrote an open “letter to a Roman Catholic”, in which he set out the many things they believed in common, adding:

When is the Co. Council going to tackle the problem of the hill at the back of St. Joseph’s College - towards Lucan Heights?

For years now, water seeping from under the ground flows down the hill when there is any kind of heavy rain. This is just mucky and dirty in ordinary weather, but when there is ice, as there was last weekend, the hill is a real death-trap. (Esker Hill is no trouble by comparison). Various small jobs have been done at this spot over the years, but nothing has been successful. Being, as it is, a spot where there are lots of children, en route to the Primary Schools and teenage girls going to St. Joseph’s, it seems to us that this is a major priority and should be dealt with very quickly before there is a terrible accident. (By the way, thanks to whoever put up a hand-written ‘ice warning’ on a pole on Saturday. It must have saved several skids.)

t Whv was there only one light working on Main Street (Carey’s end) on Sunday? Itwas one of the darkest, dirtiest, coldest and most miserable days - and God knows there have been a lot of miserable days recently. It was extremely dangerous for anyone who had X to walk down the street.

Did you see the new Name Sign erected outside S t Patrick’s Esker? We think it’s a great idea - compliments to all concerned.
