This year, March brings with it the end to some of our testing and

some springtime excitement! The had graders have finished taking

their CogAT tests and now the second grade teachers can continue the

business of the second grade curriculum. All of the teachers are doing

an excellent job of teaching the skills necessary to move to the next

grade and are assessing these skills along the way. We are looking for

continued progress and our goal is high achievement for all students.

Your assistance, by way of getting your child to school every day and

on time is invaluable to us. Reading with your child and practicing

math facts helps too. Math Fact Master is a great app that can be used

at home to strengthen these basic skills! DreamBox is another im-

portant program that focuses on concepts. Thank you for your contin-

ued support.

Speaking of reading, Read Across America was the week of

February 27th – March 3rd . We had lots of fun activities. The high-

light of the week was be when the students got to duct tape me to the

wall of the cafeteria! Yikes! It’s all for the good cause of collecting

books that our students will then get to use. Thank you for all your

donations! Our PTA meeting was on March 1st at 7pm. I hope you

can attend to learn about all of the wonderful things happening in our

school. The next meeting will be April 5th.

Kindergarten registration will begin on March 29th this year.

Kindergarten (and other grades) PRE-registration online is now open.

You only need to pre-register students who are not already attending

LCPS grades K – 5. Once pre-registered, Mrs. Pugh or Mrs. Harpster

will call you to set up an appointment for completing the registration

process. The earliest registration dates are March 29th and 30th. We

will continue taking registrations through the summer, but it will be

helpful for planning if students would be registered as early as possi-

ble. Please check the LCPS website for more information. All of the

forms are available there.

Spring Break is April 10th – 14th. Thank you for planning

your vacations during times that students are not in school.

learning about in PE class!

Art News Lucketts Elementary Art Show at Senior Center of

Leesburg We have 30 different pieces of art created by Luck-

etts students this year that are now hanging at the Senior Center of Leesburg until May 12. Feel free to stop by and

have a look. 5th graders have been learning about sculpture. They have been working on a colorful low relief foil project and next will be learning about architecture and designing their own buildings from cardboard. As a group project the 5th grade classes each had a hand in designing the "Cat in the Hats" hat for Read Across America week. 4th graders also contributed to Read Across America by each creating their own Seuss tree, inspired by the "The Lorax" book. Next, students will be working on their gesture drawings in order to create 3D wire sculptures. 3rd graders honored Dr. Seuss by designing their own fish from the book "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" In class, students have been working on drawing various faci-al features with details. They have also been learning about different portrait styles from realistic to abstract.

They will now get to create their own portrait masks, inspired by the abstract work of Pablo Picasso. 2nd graders have been learning how to make darker shades and lighter tints of colors by mixing paints. They have also been trying to improve painting skills while creating abstract paintings of their hands. 1st graders have been learning about warm and cool col-ors. They have looked at the non-objective work of Wassi-ly Kandinsky and are now creating their own "Kandinsky Trees", which are inspired by what they have learned about warm/cool colors and Kandinsky's "Circle Paintings".

Music News Music in March

Students at Lucketts Elementary School just completed a February unit on Black History Month in music. Students learned about the incredible influence of the music that

came out of slavery and how that developed into spirituals, ragtime, jazz and beyond. Students studied two famous

Americans: Scott Joplin and Louis Armstrong.

In March, all of Lucketts' students will continue to learn about Jazz, Big Band and Show tunes with our unit on the

great composer George Gershwin.

Fourth and Fifth grade continues to work on recorders in March. Fourth grade is exploring fractions in musical

rhythms, as well as increasing their proficiency in music reading.

Fifth grade began composing with rhythms and will being

to add melodic compositions.

Third Grade is starting to learn regional music from the areas where the Monarch Butterfly makes it's journey. Third grade is also gaining in proficiency on ukulele

playing.

Second grade will be introduced to basic fractions with music rhythm and apply these rhythms to an ensemble.

Students will be participating in a special performance for their One to the World project where they will play per-cussion instruments to a special rap that teaches them

about the bones in the body.

First grade and kindergarten are exploring the rhyth-mic patterns of Dr. Seuss's books. They are also learning

about instrument families.

Gifted Information Nights

Thank you to all who attended one of our many Gifted Information Nights (or morn-

ings)! The parent turnout was incredible. If you were unable to attend a Gifted Infor-

mation session, you can find all the information on the LCPS Gifted website.

Referral Process

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade screening is deadline is March 3rd. No referrals will be

accepted after that date. If your child is found eligible for gifted services, information

about his or her FUTURA entrance date and other details about FUTURA will be in-

cluded in the notification letter sent home in the US mail before the school year has

ended.

Technology News

In technology news, students have been hard at work with many technology-enhanced lessons this month. 5th grade students are creating multimedia book trailers which will be featured on our Lion’s Den morning news program. They will then track how often their books are checked out from the library. 4th graders continue to add to their fabulous class blogs, focusing on the Revolutionary Way and Dr. Seuss. 3rd grade has been hard at work creating All About Me PowerPoint presentations including word art, and graphics. They are also doing lessons focusing on safe and effective Internet research using keywords. Kindergarten is using various interactive websites to practice their reading and math skills. Students in grades 4-5 and also participating in a county-wide BrightBytes survey focusing on technology use at school and at home.

We begin the month with Read Across America week. We will celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday by

welcoming guest readers from the Loudoun County Sheriff's department and Loudoun County

Fire and Rescue. Every class will be read a story by one of our guests. Thank you to all of the

parents and students who helped to make our book drive so successful. The books will help to

support literacy in our school and in our community. The February Redskins Read classroom

winner was Mrs. Morris's class. So many of our students have made great gains in their reading

ability since the beginning of the year. Please keep encouraging your children to choose just right

books and read at home to a friend or family member.

Lucketts Lion Ambassadors Our next Spirit Day is Friday, Mar. 3rd and it is Fox in Socks Day Goes Crazy, Head to

Toe – Wear Crazy or Mismatched Socks and Crazy Hair

Thank you to all the families that sent in craft items for Ronald McDonald House at

Fairfax Hospital. We collected 3 big boxes full of craft supplies to be shared with

families who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Way to go in making this

craft collection such a success!

Fuel up to play 60 (FUTP60) News

Lucketts FUTP60 Healthy Food Challenge

Directions and rules:

FUTP60 is sponsoring a healthy food challenge for all students in grades K-5. They must create a

healthy meal and make it at home with your family.

Students who would like to participate will receive a paper plate and the form with directions in PE

class the week of Feb. 20th. You must turn in a food plate and the meal sheet to be entered into the

healthy food challenge. It must be neat and colorful!

All meals will be displayed on the FUTP60 bulletin board near the cafeteria.

Staff will anonymously vote on the healthiest meals the students created and the top healthi-

est breakfast, lunch and dinner will receive a FUTP60 prize bag!

Deadline to enter: Friday, March 17th

From the Counselor’s Corner ~Mrs. Walton

During the month of March we will be focusing on these topics in classroom guidance:

Kindergarten – we will be exploring the world of careers

1st – we will be connecting the world of work to our interests and our job at school

2nd – we will continue our series called “Talking with TJ”, in March we will be talking about listening and

understanding someone else’s point of view (we will focus on careers after this series)

3rd – we will be connecting interests to careers and interviewing family members about their careers

4th – we will be researching careers based on our interests

5th – we will be introduced to the 16 different career clusters and investigating careers that connect to our in-

terests

This 9-weeks, Mrs. Guyton and I will team up to have the students participate in teambuilding activities dur-

ing one of their PE times. We will be conducting these teambuilding times the last two weeks of the quarter.

Our teambuilding activities are designed to get the students working on communication skills and problem

solving as a group.

The specialists have criteria for each class to earn class of the month each month while they are in their class. Each class will vote on a reward in each special for

their great behavior. Below is who earned class of the month in February:
