Her work is

not the typical street

art that you will see on the back

streets of Birmingham, which

is what makes it stand out from the crowd.

Lucy McLauchlan was a student that graduated from

Birmingham City University who calls herself an

‘outdoors artist’ because she feels that she enjoys painting outside with

nature, not strictly on the street. She is inspired by the world around her including

her friends, family, work and life- her quirky charecters flow from her imagination. She uses

multiple materials within her work such as markers, pen, paint and indian ink, working on varied surfaces

including skateboard decks, airplane gliders, motor vehicles and buildings causes her to become particularly unique creating

interest across the country.

The artist is involved in an on going project with the Cure Leukemia Appeal which is based at Birmingham QE Hospital. Recently she auctioned a chair ‘Sit Down’ which was part of a collection of inanimate non-biodegradable objects which she then painted faces onto to display the fact that by consuming them people are effectively accepting a ‘life’ that now shares this earth with them, whether in use or when disposed of. For the inspiration for this particular collection McLauchlan visited metal work factories in Birmingham which are closing down to witness the craftsmen at work- ‘Witnessing the craftsmen create their last work that due to the material will definitely outlive them is very poignant.’

McLachlan currently works with Lazarides which is a company which holds exhibitions displaying the primary source of original artwork from artists such as Antony Micallef and Stanley Donwood. They show mainly work of ‘graffiti’, ‘graphics’ and ‘street art’ trying to remain as unconventional as they can. McLauchlan displayed a piece of work for Lazarides in a London exhibit which was inpired by ‘Cluttered Existence’. She used her concerns, future worries, fading memories and physical clutter and created a painting of a ‘mass crushing a poor soul’.

‘If I make a mistake I can’t remove it; often though, the accidental details become my favourite’. McLauchlan is very much expressive when it comes to her work and is not afraid to get stuck in and explore different matericals anf techniques. Beoming increasingly popular her art has featured in magazines such as ‘Hidden Tracks’, ‘Hand to Eye’, ‘Creative Review’, ‘Graphic International’ and ‘Graphic Britain.’

McLauchlan is also a founder of ‘Beat 13’ which is a collective of artists based in Birmingham who have been creating art since 1999. Pieces of Lucy McLauchlan’s work can be found around Birmingham in places such as Hurst Street and the walls and windows of Birmingham Centrall Library. Bold and elaborate pieces that just cannot and musn’t be missed!

I took the idea of painting on cans and made it my own creating a quirky skyline of Birmingham City
