Message from CII Ludhiana Zonal Chairperson

Dear Young Indians,

India is amongst very few countries in the world possessing rich culture and heritage. Today,

modern India portrays a picture of unity in diversity, the credit for which goes to the spirit of

Indians, not only in India, but worldwide. In the face of challenges, Indians have buckled up and

have made huge contributions to the country’s growth story and are continuing to explore their own

potentials.

Young Indians Ludhiana Chapter has exhibited a powerful potential with new ideas, spirit of team

work and marching at times when they were few. Within a year, the chapter has to its credit many

more young Indians holding hands and making Ludhiana Chapter a force to reckon with.

The inaugural session of Yi Ludhiana with Mr Manpreet Badal set the enthusiasm and pace for the

chapter. The year that followed was filled with activities that have been well recognized and have

won them accolades and appreciation too. I have personally attended the screening of films at FilmYi

Club and must admit that the movies chosen for screening did nudge me to ponder over many

varied issues of culture and society and the discussions that followed have further contributed to my

thinking about issues that I may not have thought otherwise.

The chapter has given full support to CII Ludhiana Zonal Council and have actively participated in

activities taken up by them. I am sure YI Ludhiana will continue giving their unstinted support in

the coming years as well.

Wishing Yi Ludhiana a great success in their endeavors in the future.

Yi Ludhiana Annual Report 2012-132 Yi Ludhiana Annual Report 2012-13 3

I am very glad to be writing this note for the Yi Ludhiana Chapter

Annual Report 2012-13, a chapter which is just an year old and has

done tremendously well in terms of impact created through our

various initiatives under different verticals.

Message from Co-Chair, Young Indians (Ludhiana Chapter)

Having returned home after a period of brief study and work, my heart really wanted to engage in

various issues concerning our city, our state and our nation at large. I, like many other young lads of

the city, spoke righteously about various issues with honest intentions of transforming these

thoughts into action. Young Indians did just that, for me and for its other members. Last year, it

provided a few young minds with a platform to put diverse ideas into one box, mixed and matched

these ideas to create its 7 verticals; verticals that can house even the most bizarre ideas!

For me, Yi is not just an organization that one volunteers a few hours each month, to satisfy an

inherent need of the conscious, for having done one’s part for the betterment of the society. Yi, for

me, is a way of living. Targeting development at the grass root level, it requires more than time,

ideas! It is an organization where each member (depending on the willingness of course) is provided

on a platter, the opportunity to exhibit his or her leadership qualities, to learn, to network, to

execute.

The first year of Yi-Ludhiana has been undoubtedly a roller coaster ride. We have fallen, risen and

flown at various occasions. We have had from 5% to 80% participation. Our flagship events, which

have received much appreciation from Yi- National and the city, have been the Reflector Sticker

Campaign and a session on “Innovative teaching methodologies to make Learning Effective” with

David Wittenberg at LPU, Jalandhar. This one-year has also left the chapter with fresh friendships

with like minded, enthusiastic individuals not just from within the chapter but also with members

from across the country.

I am extremely grateful to the team at the national for being a guiding light throughout, Ms

Anupama Arya, National Chairperson and Mr Srikant Suryanarayan, National Vice Chairman,Young

Indians. The members of Yi-Ludhiana have been extremely gracious with their patience and

enthusiasm.

Having learnt a few lessons in the first year, the coming year I am certain will be much more focused

on the true calling of Young Indians- development. "We Can, We Will"

Thank you

Message from Chair, Young Indians (Ludhiana Chapter)

Yi is a family in its own way, where Yi chapters and Yi National have always interacted with each

other, thus opening us to the bigger picture. Initially I joined Yi-Chandigarh chapter and within a

year’s time, Yi-national wanted to start Yi-Ludhiana chapter and I took the lead of starting it.

I was introduced to Young Indians by my family members and asked to take the initiative in a town

like Ludhiana, which has now opened itself up to commitment and giving time to congregations of

these sorts. I came across members of similar enthusiasm who wanted the change in areas that have

always been neglected like drug abuse, unemployment, caring for the environment and bringing

forward the under privileged. We have slowly and steadily touched society and the members by

introducing events which have their common interest in the field of art, culture, health, Yi-net and

education.

To name a few, we recently had a very successful event with Dr Shikha Sharma who is an authority

where healthy diet is concerned. We got appreciation for the Yi sticker campaign that we had in

Ludhiana. Under this campaign, specially designed Reflector Stickers were pasted on the bicycles and

two wheelers of factory workers. We even held a number of medical health camps to educate staff &

workers of factories on de-addiction and general health issues. We spent time and gave gifts to

children in DMC Hospital’s children’s ward during the Joy of Giving week which was truly a heart

moving experience.

We have had many weekends, where we have come together to watch movies of the International

cinema which hold a value higher than just commercial blockbusters, movies with a message and

thought to take back home. We were able to appreciate and give a platform to the young and

emerging talent of Punjab like singers, musicians, artists and dancers.

Yes, we have a long way to go. We are constantly learning from our seniors and trying to imbibe the

same within our chapter.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said- “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Hence Yi’s

dominant motive is to make a difference in people’s lives. We are all here to help and learn from

each other. What better way can there be than small group interactions, seminars, retreats and

symposiums.

Yi is where even the small things matter. We are focusing on life at the micro level, where it all

begins. With many a rise and fall in day to day decisions and administrations we only stand to gain.

Mental stimulation is the factor that drives us constantly. As I make way for the new Yi chair-

Ludhiana chapter, my endeavour to facilitate the above will continue as a member.

Last but not the least nothing would have been possible without the support of my amazing team

members, Yi national heads and CII Punjab.

Thank you once again for bringing meaning to my life!!!!

Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, not-for-profit,

industry led and industry managed organisation playing a proactive role in India's development process. Yi was formed in

the year 2002 with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to realise the dream of a developed nation. Yi has

around 1300 direct members in 27 city chapters, 320 members through its corporate chapters, 6000 students through

student nets and 11000 young and progressive farmers through the farmer nets.

Yi membership includes young progressive Indians between the age group of 25 & 40 and comprises entrepreneurs,

professionals and achievers from different walks of life. "To become the Voice of Young Indians Globally" being the vision of

Yi, it provides a platform for young Indians to participate in and contribute by becoming an integral part of the Indian

growth story. Yi's work can be divided primarily into three groups; "Youth Leadership", "Youth Social Entrepreneurship” and

“International Engagements”.

Under youth leadership, Yi works effectively for promoting leadership skills for its members through the learning programs

and missions to companies of global excellence in India and abroad; the development and engagement of students through

its 93 Student Net platforms that has 5578 students; and the Farmers Net platform that has enrolled more than 8500 young

& progressive farmers providing them with real time agricultural inputs and know-how. Yi's regional and national summits

on themes related to the times and the role of youth and its engagement with the governments at the state and national

level gives an opportunity for the members to become effective leaders with a vision into the future. The “Next Practices”

vertical of Yi engages the students and members to bring out, “out of the box” and innovative solutions to common

problems for the region and the nation at large. Done under the “Blue Ocean Dialogue” brand, the ideas that have come out

of these engaged workshops have been captured for further processing.

Under youth social entrepreneurship, Yi engages its members under the board categories of education, environment,

healthcare, employability, arts (sports & culture) and rural initiatives contributing positively to its surrounding eco system

and the nation. Through its initiatives like Akshara under Education, Yi has impacted more than 15000 students across 57

centers and has successfully managed campaigns like the 'SYightboard Project', providing blackboards to schools across

different cities, reaching out to 1070 schools nationally and impacting approximately 2,53,000 children.

Yi has been instrumental in skilling & placing 1300 youth under the aegis of its Employability program. Under the

Healthcare initiative, over 175000 children have been dewormed in addition to many other health awareness programs

across the community in different cities. Within the sphere of Environment, Yi conducts Green I contest to encourage and

motivate school children to bring out sustainable green campuses through ideas, campaigns for tree plantation, solid waste

management projects, involving citizens and children in the process. Yi is also in the process of planting one million

saplings across the country through its 'One Million Tree Project'.Yi strives to engage members and students in cultural

activities like musical concerts, visiting to heritage monuments for learning, traditional dinner, celebrating the 100th year

of the Indian National Anthem and initiatives that connect the youth with areas inclined towards Arts, Sports and Culture.

Yi engages around 10000 people each year during the World Heritage Week.

Under the "International Engagement", Yi is one of the proud founders of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs' Alliance which is a

collective of leading entrepreneurially-minded organizations representing the G20 countries who seek to promote youth

entrepreneurship as a powerful driver of economic renewal, job creation, innovation and social and is one of the founders

of theCommonwealth Asia Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs (CAAYE) which is a network of young entrepreneurs from the

Commonwealth Asia region and the organizations that support them. Yi has organized learning missions to many countries

around the world to understand and learn from the best practices and cultures of countries around the world. It has also

worked with the Planning Commission of India in conducting consultation workshops across its chapters for accumulating

a youth perspective to be included in the 12th Five Year Plan and with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of

India to facilitate missions of visiting delegations of young entrepreneurs to India from around the world.

With nine years of glorious past and decades ahead that promise nothing short, Yi intends to become a larger movement of

young people and promote the attitude of "We Can, We Will".
