During this course we delved into the in-formal settlements in the megapolitan con-text of India. After a thorough site study of a variety of these settlements it was proposed to develop an informal city ver-tically. A central element of the project was to question and rewrite the role of the architect in the defi nition of the city, and take into account the roles of all the other parties.

The collective LaNa (Almudena Cano and Isabel Gutiérrez) collaborated proposing and evaluating teaching strategies.

Joint Workshop with the Bangladesh Univer-sity of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

This project is advancing towards a joint workshop in February 2014 with this public school, the most prestigious in the coun-try, that has highly recognised teachers in the Asian fi eld.It will likely address the urban-rural re-lationship, and the infl uence of contempo-rary urbanity in a rural area that is also globalized.

C. COURSES & WORKSHOPS SELECTION

Since 2010 I have successfully led eleven Final Year Projects (PFCs), some of them achieving the highest qualifi cations (two honours). In ge-neral a line of research of a cer-tain depth has been required from the students, in which issues of the “second round” of the project are addressed.

Although not exclusively, a high percentage of jobs that I lead deve-lop into highly complex social con-texts, often in developing areas.

The Publication of the projects by Almudena Cano, Alberto González-Ca-pitel and Juan José Cobo is being prepared. All three are located in the Indian context, and in addition to their excellence (all three had top marks), share a profound appro-ach to the city from its production process.

Currently I manage fi fteen projects.

FINAL YEAR PROJECTSETSAM, 2010 - 2013

Since 2006 we have coordinated Spa-nish participation in the Habitat Design International Studio of the Vastu Shilpa Foundation in Ahmeda-bad. Every year a group of fi nal year students from ETSAM participate, to-gether with students from the RWTH of Aachen, the TU of Delph, as well as different Indian universities, forming a group of around thirty participants.

They work for two months by the hand of Balkrishna Doshi on the develop-ment of projects on urban fabrics in complex social contexts around Ah-medabad.

Nearly a hundred ETSAM students have already passed through this cour-se and more than thirty ETSAM PFCs (Final Year Projects) have origina-ted from this workshop. Many of them have obtained the highest marks.

Micro-interventions workshop on the Field of Barley, as a closing cere-mony for Projects 8 and 9 for Luis Basabe’s group at ETSAM.

Wooden components were made, in teams, which should be able to assu-me at least three urban functions, useful for the fi eld itself.

The components produced were used as part of the provisional urbani-zation of the Bellastock Madrid fes-tival 2012, and today form part of the urban furniture of the Field of Barley.

The workshop was coordinated by Zu-loark, Alba Balmaseda and Luis Ba-sabe.

The workshop focused on public space as a place of eminent Indian urba-nity.

2. Transformation of public space in the context of Gopal Nagar, in mo-dels.

3. The result of this course, and especially the catalogue, is in an advanced state of preparation of a publication on the production of pu-blic space in the informal urban In-dian context, at the hands of stu-dents and teachers of the workshop.

As the start of a course project, and as part of the Madrid Future Festi-val 2010 in El Matadero, we worked on the production of a series of fi ve models to explore scenarios of de-velopment for the informal settle-ment of the Cañada Real Galiana in Madrid.

The models, each of which represen-ted 1 Km from different sectors of la Cañada, covered the following scenarios:

They were presented at el Matadero, to an audience of architects, stu-dents and, above all, many neigh-bours of the Cañada. They awakened an intense and fruitful discussion.

Together with Zuloark, and with the help of Basurama and Diego Peris of TXP, the project group of Alba Bal-maseda and Luis Basabe from ETSAM held this workshop for the implemen-tation of a playground in the infor-mal settlement of Gallinero (Madrid)

They took advantage of the incre-dible urban games developed by Zu-loark in the Noche en Blanco 2010, that recycled discarded elements of the urban street furniture of Madrid (for example some enormous street lamp poles...).

Construction was carried out with help from some local residents, and in the midst of a continual testing of the facilities by the children.

With the theme “The city and its agents: Developments on the Delhi-Mumbai Urban Corridor”, proposals for the development of new urban areas in the context of infrastruc-tural Delhi-Mumbai corridor were developed, from the point of view of the relationship and interaction between the different parties of ur-ban development: the public entity, the market, social partners, coope-ratives, informality, etc.

After an intense analysis of a mo-del of the Indian city, we worked for two weeks on a series of lar-ge collective models (200x100cm), in which different students assumed various roles of agents in the pro-duction of the city. It was a magni-fi cent testing-ground to display the urban negotiation, as much its diffi -cult dimensions as its synergetics.

In the workshop in India we worked under the theme “The Vertial Pol”. Following an exhaustive analysis of a piece of urban fabric of Ahmeda-bad, the exercise consisted of the production, in international teams, of a model 150x15x30 in the scale 1:100, in which the programme, den-sity, activity, character, produc-tion process, social structure etc, of the studied area must translate into a vertical structure 30m high and 150m long.

On returning, the course continued with the development of proposals for the Sabarmati River Slum, in continuation with the Indian works-hop.

THE VERTICAL POL

This was the fi rst joint workshop with students at CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

We worked on the development of the area around Lake Asarwa, using the gaps left by the industry, which mo-ves bit by bit outside the city, and by integrating the different exis-ting social fabrics: informal sett-lement, former rural centre, social housing, small industrial activi-ties, etc.

The nature of the process of Indian architecture, the enormous complexi-ty of the social fabrics, the neces-sity to work with various different scales all at once, and the rich cultural and social context were all determining factors for the develo-pment of the workshop and its re-sults.

In the context of the recently evic-ted Town of Fuencarral B, built by Alejandro de la Sota in 1956, we de-veloped a workshop on performative analysis and interventions in public space.The empty houses, the recently aban-doned streets, and the fi rst demo-litions were the canvas for a se-ries of observant approaches to the neighbourhood, but it was a series of talks and a dinner with the re-housed, resistant inhabitants that contributed a complex vision of this problem

The workshop took place as part of the Project courses 4/5 at ETSAM, as an approximation to the context of the rest of the course work

FUENCARRAL 1956-2006

Performative analysis workshop in the recently evicted town of absor-btion Fuencarral B

The comparison with the true scale was a constant priority on the Ba-sic Architecture 4 course, which en-couraged us to test some prototypes of low cost coverings with different materials.

We tested two technologies to build a dome element: It was called ‘Do-mocaña’ with a reed structure, and a variant with metal reinforcement, stabilized with chicken wire. Both components can be consolidated with mortar.

Some thirty people participated in the workshop: besides all our stu-dents, some members of the asf_etsam association also worked on the pro-totypes.

DOMOCAÑAS

ETSAM 2005Autoconstruction workshop on low cost prototypesWith Ismael Miguel

In 2000 I was a tutoring a group on the Experimental Construction cour-se in the Construction Department at the TU of Graz.

The theme of the course was the ten-segrity structures, in which there is a radical dissociation between the compression elements and ten-sioners. These diffi cult to calculate structures were explored in an ex-perimental way, by means of testing and prototypes.

We worked with structures and mo-dels on a true scale, testing the different possible confi gurations, their limits to behave as a tower or rafter, as well as the problematic structural bonds.

WHICH IS THE ARCHITECT’S ROLE in the configuration of a city, that shows itself always more as an ex-tremely complex and changeable rea-lity? as an answer, we understand the planning of [sub]urban contexts as the generation of supports, not only for buildings but especially for the many processes that consti-tute the city.Conventional planning thinks of the city on its final stage, as if it was an inert entity. Despite the city is an open process, with a highly changeable context of neces-sities and opportunities. Instead of a pre-designed urban tissue, a controlled growth process is pro-posed: a liquid city that works as a complete urban configuration in all stages of consolidation, able to adapt itself to any contextual change.

CITY PROBLEMS ARE MULTIPLE AND COMPLEX and they are interrelated, together forming an extensive and dense structural framework. Archi-tecture and urbanism cannot answer for more than a few points of this mesh. We propose a tool designed specifically to manage processes, to describe and manage this complexi-ty, and put each problem in rela-tion to the others and as a whole; a common framework for all PARTIES involved in the development of the area that manages the various mul-tidisciplinary teams and the rela-tionship between them.

[EX-CITIZENS] In such a disperse su-burban extension as Diemlach, it is possible to read a legitimate option of the inhabitants, who choose to abandon the modern city, stunned at its thunderous failure. They become then somehow ex-citizens, and inha-bit what we (from the city) call the sub-urbs.

The aim of this work is to start a process: the first stage in a com-plex negotiation with numerous stakeholders. The problematic po-licy is very complex, and archi-tecture can only respond to a small part. As an alternative to geo-metric apriority of conventional planning it is proposed a ‘liquid city’: a city understood as a pro-cess that is continually adapted to its social content, compared to structures preconceived and imposed on the residents.

In the development of a neighbou-rhood there are a great number of influences, interests, disciplines and different parties involved. Instead of a linear way of thinking and working, inadequate to cope with the complexity of the context, we propose a fragmented approach: a collection of tabs that display different aspects to consider in the planning and mark out the cour-se of action. Each tab is indepen-dent, you can add or remove tabs and organize them by themes and approaches, leaving the planning process open to the different par-ties involved in it.

After winning the contest, a se-ries of workshops are being carried out in Vienna to define the ur-ban concept of the new area, along with the other two teams selected: Querkraft architekten and Tillner Architekten & Willinger.

The work done, based on negotiation between the different parties, res-ponds to the concepts of mobility, free space and configuration of the construction, forming the basis for future suburban planning.

This addresses an important point of access to the city, which is cu-rrently badly damaged. It still has great potential as an “around” bet-ween the consolidated urban fabric and a suburban landscape, dispersed and fragmented, which in turn is a valuable green space.

The urban definition process is being developed collaboratively, together with two other winning Viennese studies (Peter Lorenz and the next enterprise), and with a working group that includes local politicians, investors and repre-sentatives from different sectors of the population, as well as ex-perts in mobility, infrastructure and landscape (3:0 lanschaftarchi-tektur).

Allemende is a German term, used since the 13th century to define a community space with a special re-gime of appropriation: none of the people in the community had exclu-sive control over said space but instead had the ability to tempo-rarily use it: farmers could let their cattle graze there, and al-ternate throughout the year the use of the land as a growing field.

In the suburban context of the small town of Lörrach, we propose to reinterpret the concept of All-mende as a new residential structu-re.

The competition was looking for solutions to two requirements of the site ’Stadtteilzentrum Züricher Straße’, that it should provide an answer for a street with a row of high rise blocks at the front and towards the south it should main-tain the residential scale of its surroundings, with a lower height and suburban character.

We propose by configuring a unique fabric to address two settings. It is in the relationship with the open space where the fabric deter-mines its character: more urban towards Züricher Straße, forming a large space where all its features are brought together. Towards the south, the character of the open space is reversed: The pre-designed site becomes a green community spa-ce, of low maintenance and capable of temporary appropriation by the residents, this is Allmende.

RUNNER-UP

The jury was looking for urban con-cepts for the development of the area V2+, which borders with Vor-gartenstrasse, the metro line U21 and the new university campus in Vienna. To address the complex task of planning, we propose an approach of fragmented information: urban guidelines to manage the debate between the different parties in-volved: public institutions, priva-te developers and technicians res-ponsible.

The search for an urban identity in recognizable nodes , diversity of scales of free space or centrali-zed management of the lower floors are some of the proposed guideli-nes. The set of guidelines defines a framework within a much larger field, encompassing proposals of the different technicians involved. The requirement of independent infor-mation, cut out and interchangea-ble makes the proposal a management tool open to the planning process in the area.

On an urban scale, the competition looked for solutions for the deve-lopment of a health complex: two clinics (Isk and Romed) with shared spaces, which must be inserted into the landscape of dispersed fabric of the city of Wasserburg (Ger-many).

Mindful of this context, we propo-se a dual solution: On one hand, we maintain the dispersed nature of the place; we respect the existing buildings, using the fabric to con-figure pavilions around public squa-res.On the other hand, we gather the technical body of the hospital (emergency department, operating theatres, rehabilitation, tanks, etc.) on a common floor of inter-connected spaces, in which the dual circulation of the hospital complex is guaranteed.

Two slightly underground platforms with common set ups (gym, dining hall, etc.) serve buildings with a more specific program. One, as the entrance space to university and podium for a building with diffe-rent departments required. The other, as topography and a green expansion of the park that houses three lecture rooms.

For its internal configuration, we understand the university as a se-quence of places of association, meeting spaces for students, tea-chers, researchers, visitors, etc.. The organization system is based on the superposition of said meeting spaces; they are arranged around spaces of different scales: clas-srooms, offices, meeting rooms, com-puter classes, researchers’ posts, etc.

Faculty-College Competition in Salzburg

The competition for the planning of suburban Oedenburgerstrasse (Vien-na) sought to solve four areas of urbanism: planning, mobility, free space and building.

We propose a matrix that links the-se areas to our goals for new de-velopment in the area: diversity, porosity, identity, and management process. Crossing these ‘courses of action’ gives us a framework of ac-tions to deal with the problem un-derground.

The matrix is not closed, rather the opposite. If we cut the ‘actions’ they become independent information, interchangeable and able to be rea-rranged by other experts. The matrix thus becomes an open cloud of infor-mation and, in turn, a discussion tool for all parties involved in the planning.

On the land of the station north of Vienna an important urban de-velopment is projected. All tra-ffic and freight management has been taken to another area of the city, so that all remains is a big bag of free land in the middle of the city, crossed over by a commuter line. Some 30ha in which to build some 6000 homes, offices, endow-ments, parking and more. It has to unite fabric from a very different city altogether.

Diverse and adaptable fabric is proposed, surrounded by a ring-road/zone that reacts to the exis-ting adaptations of the different borders. The fabric allows the diversity of parties in terms of investment and management applica-tions. Public investment is minimi-zed, and inhabitants are empowered by the construction, management and use of the free community space, a porous area, appropriated and pro-grammable.

Finnoo is a coastal town near Hel-sinki. The competition calls for doubling the port’s capacity to 2,000 boats and for the city to grow to 210.000m².

Urban support by way of an abacus of public space is propose, around which the buildings are built, lea-ving a lot of free community space. This support is based on ecologi-cally sustainable strategies as it is a particularly sensitive area in terms of ecosystems and in terms of impact on the landscape.

The proposal offers a great amount of freedom and adaptability, becau-se it is an open process in various fields: social, economic, manage-ment, etc. so that the project builds a complete city fragment in all stages of the development and configuration process.

In Vienna Central Station the lar-gest communications hub in Austria is being built, and the area is being completely restructured. The City Council holds a competition for developing an area of 11.5 ha between the train tracks and the park. A number of strategies were proposed for the development of the area. The proposal was selected among the finalists.

How can we create a suburban commu-nity?

We have to rewrite the structure of ownership. We propose a radical fragmentation of ownership. Serving the public space of Kongress Park is a network of gardens available for hire, acting as objects in the public space of the park, disconti-nuously and scattered, activating and revitalizing. Its design and management is based on 3 princi-ples:

The principle of minimizing the scale of intervention, reducing the initial investment to increase the power of user decision.

The principle of a public space in the process: the gardens are pro-gramming in real time and are of temporary private ownership.

Principle of the involvement of the users, who will be responsible for the origin and development of the public space. The array of gardens will function as a collective pat-tern for individual interpretation.

1 site. 10 ha. 100 gardens. 1000 homes. In what was some land dedi-cated to pig farming has now become a free space in a suburban zone in the city of Vienna. After winning the international competition ca-lling for this fragment of city to be developed, the proposal has been finalized.

Support is available for small private gardens around those which construction is available, which are available in different sizes, absorbing the different needs of all parties involved in the crea-tion of city.

A flexible fabric, capable of adap-ting to an ongoing process. A frag-ment of the whole city and program-med from the start.

A porous fabric that allows the ground to show. For existing trees, water, animals, etc.

A fabric that provides a great structure of community land, APPRO-PRIABLE, on which will allow neigh-bourhood programs, sports, leisure, orchards, etc..

The Santa Engracia neighbourhood is a UVA of 12 hectares and 800 houses on the right bank of the river Gua-diana, Badajoz, built in 1961. Both the housing and infrastructure are Deteriorated have greatly.

The Special Interior Reform Plan seeks comprehensive regeneration of the area, focusing on rehabilitation rather than demolition and replace-ment. The actions are defi ned in a series of 8 strategies: Identity. Relief. Accessibility. Visibility. Reactivation. Connection. Sustaina-bility. Landscape.

We propose to renovate the neigh-bourhood providing more density, more typological diversity and new programmes to revive it. This is to qualify the public space and its re-lational potential and landscape. All these actions are applied from an ecological viewpoint socially, economically and in their hydrolo-gical and material energy resources.

The competition calls for low den-sity intervention in the outskirts of the Finnish city of Turku. We propose a sustainable support that rethinks the relationship between public, private and community. An interchangeable property structure, adaptable and flexible, that enables and manages population diversity and uses in the ongoing process of city formation, with the constant transformation that involves living in this post-industrial suburban context.

As part of the Future Festival Ma-drid in the Matadero in Madrid we discussed this refl ection on the mo-dern, contemporary models of the ur-ban fabric production.

Developed in full crisis of the ex-pansive developmentalism model, this small job involved for us a valua-ble phenomenology on the development of cities, their different scales and different rhythms. It led us to explore the multiplicity of actors involved in the production of the city.

The project took the form of a board game, a collection of counters and a set of ten postcards.

LUCIA accommodates programmes of di-fferent natures, with different de-grees of privacy, preset, visibi-lity, etc., that STRATIFY to leave public use on the ground fl oor, modu-lar work spaces on the fi rst, and the three research centres on the second and third.

LUCIA is intended to house a very complex programme in terms of di-versity, and above all in regard to its variability. It must be open to constant renegotiation, and therefo-re behave more like PROCESS SUPPORT than a conventional building.

LUCIA is an OPEN SYSTEM to the chan-ge on different scales, from deep restructuring and global programme changes to interim or specifi c modi-fi cations.

The campus is set out as an environ-ment that is open and permeable to the city, which allows the overlap of fl ows and activities outside of it. It appears as a conglomeration of different public spaces, amongst which are a forest of black poplars perimeter and a large park on the roof of the building. So it beco-mes a true forum for university life and, in general, urban.

The black poplar wood has an extreme density change with the loss of its leaves, and happens to have a den-se canopy that fi lters and sifts the sunlight in the summer to be practi-cally transparent in winter. It behaves, therefore, as an opti-mal light, thermal, humidity, noi-se, etc. regulator. In addition, the forest involves campus life in the rhythms and cycles of nature and the seasons: colour change, density, hu-midity, odour, texture, etc.

The delicate situation of the boun-dary between a suburban zone and a valuable natural environment poses a dilemma: who colonized whom?

We propose a strategy invasive of nature, the fl ood, in a certain sen-se symmetrical to the widening grid. The natural environment thus becomes the positive element of the project, while the city appears as negative residual entity resulting from the determination of natural areas.

SECOND PLACE

The obsession with blurring the boundaries between inside and out-side, through successive fi lters that mediate between man and the exter-nal environment, is the leitmotif of this project. The habitat is unders-tood as an interface between man and nature: on the one hand it makes the habitable, and on the other makes sustainable the human presence in it.

Therefore, from the typological defi -nition to the typical nature (vege-tal) they should all contribute to this unit, and the building is so involved in the rhythms and cycles of nature and the seasons: change in colour, density, moisture, odour, texture...
