  • Luke 2A Savior Is Born

Luke Chapter 2, Gods Timing Is Perfect, scepter departed, Betrothed, kataluma Inn, euaggelizo gospel, which Savior, circumcision on Eighth Day, turtledoves or pigeons, Consolation Of Israel, grow in grace

  • Luke 2:1-7

  • Luke 2:1-3, Gods Timing Is Perfect

Luke 2:1 Now in those days [What days?] Daniel 9:25 "So you are to know and discern that

from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing. [483 yrs after the 444BC decree, 173,880 days after]

John 2:4 And Jesus said My hour has not yet come. Matthew 26:18 .My time is near; I am to keep the

Passover John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, "The

    hour has come

  • Luke 2:1-3, Gods Timing Is Perfect

Luke 2:1 a decree went out from Caesar Augustus

Augustus was the Roman emperor from 31BC to AD 14

Luke 2:2 This was the first census taken

  • Dave Reagan, Lamb and Lion Ministries The crucial turning point came soon after Herod's death

when, in about 7 AD, the Romans removed the power of the Sanhedrin Council in Judah to pronounce the death penalty. Thus the scepter (the supreme judicial power) passed from Judah.

There is a notation about this in the Talmud (the Jewish oral tradition). The Talmud states that on this occasion the members of the Sanhedrin were overtaken by "a general consternation." Incredibly, it is further recorded that they "covered their heads with ashes and their bodies with sackcloth, exclaiming: 'Woe unto us, for the scepter has departed from Judah, and the Messiah has not come!'"

What they did not realize was that Jesus the Messiah had been born around 4 BC during the last years of Herod (Matthew 2:1). So "Shiloh" had arrived shortly before the scepter departed just as prophesied!...

  • Daniel 9:24-27, Predicted It And Genesis Promised It

They should have known the Messiah had to have been born! Because

Genesis 49:10 "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

  • Gen 49:9, Lion of the tribe of Judah

Chuck Missler on pages 98-100 of Genesis Notes says; This transfer of power was recorded in The Jerusalem Talmud (Sanhedrin, folio 24); and by Josephus, Wars of the Jews, book 2 Chapter 8; Antiquities of the Jews.... (This remarkable passage not only mentions Jesus and his brother James as historical figures, it also underscores that the authority of the Sanhedrin had passed to the Romans. John 18:31 "Unlawful to put a man to death"

  • Luke 2:4, The Savior At Bethlehem

  • Luke 2:4, 11, The City Of David

  • Luke 2:4, 11, The City Of David

1st. NASU use of city of David is in 2 Samuel 5:7 Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is the city of David.

1 Kings 8:1 the city of David, which is Zion. 1 Chronicles 11:5 The inhabitants of Jebus said

to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).

Luke 2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

  • Luke 2:5, His Betrothed

Mary was not his wife yet, the marriage was not consummated yet.

NAS CSB NAU ...Mary, who was engaged to him...

KJV ...his espoused wife... YLT NKJ ...his betrothed wife... ESV ...his betrothed, ... NET ... who was promised in marriage to him

  • Luke 2:7, Rights Of The Firstborn Double Portion/Double Blessing

Luke 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

You may be asking, Why does Jesus get to be ruler of all Israel, Hes not descended from Rueben, the firstborn?

    Remember from our Genesis study

  • Gen 48:5, 13 tribes, 14 Names

Gen 35:22Jacob had twelve sons: First mention/use of a complete list of the

twelve sons. 12 tribes, 14 name vocabulary. Gen 48:5 "Now then, your two sons born to

you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Joseph gets the double blessing. Judah gets the right of the firstborn.

  • Luke 2:7, Luke 22:11, kataluma Inn, Guest Room, Upper Room

Luke 2:7 there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 22:11 Where is the guest room [kataluma] in

which I may eat the Passover Mark 14:14 guest room [kataluma] I may eat the

Passover 15 a large upper room furnished [GING] , , guest room, dining room Mk 14:14; Lk 22:11. Since Lk 10:34 uses the more specific term for inn, , the term . in 2:7 is best understood as guest room.* [pg 103]

  • Luke 2:7, Luke 22:11, kataluma Inn, Guest Room, Upper Room

YLT Luke 2:7 a place in the guest-chamber Net Bible Notes say, However, it has been

suggested by various scholars that Joseph and Mary were staying with relatives in Bethlehem .if that were so the term would refer to the guest room in the relatives' house, which would have been filled beyond capacity with all the other relatives who had to journey to Bethlehem for the census There was no place for them in the inn. There is no drama in how this is told. There is no search for a variety of places to stay or a heartless innkeeper. (Such items are later, nonbiblical embellishments.) Bethlehem was not large and there was simply no other place to stay. The humble surroundings of the birth are ironic in view of the birth's significance.

  • Luke 2:8-20

  • Luke 2:8-16, No Star, But Found Their Way

Luke 2:16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

  • Numbers 24:17, Matthew 2:2, A Star

Numbers 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall crush through the forehead of Moab, And tear down all the sons of Sheth.

Matthew 2:2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

  • Luke 2:8, Shepherds Near Bethlehem

Luke 2:8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.

The fields between Bethlehem and the temple is where the sacrificial offering lambs were kept.

  • Luke 2:10, Good News

    Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;

The good news (euaggelizo) = gospel, the same gospel we preach.

  • Luke 2:11 there has been born for

    you a Savior

    Which Savior?

  • Luke 2:11 Which Savior?

Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

NIV Isaiah 43:10I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.

  • The Savior Who Is The I am [ego eimi]

NIV Isaiah 43:10understand that I am he [LXX= ego eimi] . Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.

John 8:24 "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He [ego eimi] , you will die in your sins."

  • Luke 2:21-24

  • Luke2:21, The Eighth Day

The Christmas Story Part 2 (Conclusion) Saturday, December 18th, 2010, A Bible Study by Jack Kelley On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he

was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.(Luke 2:21)

Before the Lord ordained the ritual of circumcision for males, He arranged for the coagulating pro-enzyme called prothrombin to be at 130% of normal adult levels on the eighth day of life, and for natural analgesic enzymes in the blood to be at lifetime highs as well.

Circumcision on any other day can be a painful and bloody event, but on the eighth day of life its remarkably less so. Of course, this is a fact the medical profession has only learned in the last century. Back then people just knew that everything worked better when they were obedient to Gods commands.

  • Luke 2:24, Turtledoves Or Two Young Pigeons

Luke 2:24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, "A PAIR OF TURTLEDOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS.

Leviticus 12:8 'But if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, the one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.'"

  • Luke 2:25+36, Simeon+ Anna

Luke 2:25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

Luke 2:36 And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,

  • Luke 2:25-35, Simeon

    John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

Trinity Alert!!! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  • Are God's Promises For Me?

Are all God's promises for me? Luke 2:35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul--

to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.

Acts 9:16 for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name's sake."

How do I know which of God's promises are for me? We must discern between general promises and specific

promises. A general promise is one that is given by the Holy Spirit

to every believer in every age. A specific promise is one that is made to specific

individuals on specific occasions. The context of the promise determines the beneficiary.

  • Luke 2:36-39, Anna

Luke 2:37 and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers.

  • Luke 2:36, Anna

Luke 2:36 Annalived with her husband seven years after her marriage,

Luke 2:37 and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers.

    16? + 7= 23, -84= 61 years a widow, serving the LORD at the temple

  • Luke 2:38, Looking For The Redemption

Luke 2:38 At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

This is a different Greek word than consolation

  • So, In Closing

  • Luke 2:40, Grow In Grace

Luke 2:40 The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

When I speak of a person growing in grace, I mean simply this- that his sense of sin is becoming deeper, his faith stronger, his hope brighter, his love more extensive, and his spiritual mindedness more marked. J. C. Ryle

  • A Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard.

  • A Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard.

During the night the folks came across this scene. An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep. He chose baby Jesus as his comfort. No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night.

We should all have the good sense of this dog and curl up in Jesus' lap from time to time.

No one mentioned that the dog breed is a "shepherd!"

  • The End Merry Christmas
