LESSONS OF THE EMPTY TOMB

Scripture: Luke 24:1-12 (Pew Bible p. 916-917) 1

Intro: In his book, There I Go Again, Steven Mosele y tells about Anna Pa'!l9Y,g.., a Russian ballet superstar of the early 1900's. Ms. Pavlova fias been acclaimed as the greatest ballerina of all time. Her most memorable performance, however, took place after her death.

Anna was to play the role she made famous, the Dying Swan, at the Apollo Theater in London. Tragically, she succumbed to pneumonia and died two days before the event.

Still, on the appointed night, a crowd of her fans packed the Apollo Theater. The orchestra began playing, the curtain rose, a spotlight flashed through the dark, and the entire audience rose to its feet. They all stood gazing at a pool of light moving gracefully around the stage, accompanied by the orchestral theme. > As the light danced and the orchestra played, they remembered Anna Pavlova. In their hearts they could see her on stage, dressed in white with flashing dark eyes. And when the music stopped at last, they gave the vanished Anna a thunderous ovation that echoed on and on in the night. ).An empty stag with only a spotlight, but in their hearts she was ALf VE!

r some, this is their expe rience of Easter. The Lord was crucified, He died as all of us will one day die, and He was laid in a borrowed tomb u in the hearts of His disciples He lives forever. A e ty stage, but not an empty tomb!

This i s NOT t h e t e st i mony, of the New Testament. Yes, He DI D die. Y·~s, He WAS laid in a bor .:.·owed tomb, BUT when t h e wonen and later the disciples came to visit the tomb, the stone had been rolled away. The borrowed tomb was empty. The grave clothes were neatly folded and laid to the side. He not there! He was alive! He met with them, dined with them, reassured t n --.Q9t as a mere -memory <J,~g i :i::i a _ s pot l ight, but as a REAL person! This is t he Easter sTory. Not an empty stage , but a n empty tomb!

Is this important? You bet it is! Ultimately, you and I have a choice to make. It is the most important choice we will ever face. It is whether to accept the empty stage or to accept the empty tomb.

Does Christ merely ''live in the hearts" of His disciples or is He W:JmY-<..alive today just as you and I are alive?

we..c•~~i(l.1':ne angel• said, "He is not here, but is RISEN!" lbe r e f ore there are some wonderful lessons of the empty tomb to be learned today.

I. THE PROPER ATTITUDE TOWARD DEATH -- FEARLESSNESS --Luke 24:Sa "And . .. they were afraid." --Matt 28:5-6 "And the angel answered and said unto the women,

'Fear not: for I know that you seek Jesus which has been crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, even as He said. Come see the place where the Lord Lay.'"

1. Because of The Forgivenes s of Your Sins --ILLUS: The greatest cause for fear of death is not pain,

the fear of the unknown, or even leaving loved ones. The greatest cause for fear of death is the dread of facing your personalv sins before a holy God.

I. ~HE PROPER ATTITUDE TOWARD DEATH -- FEARLESSNESS 1. Because of The Forgivene ss of Your Sins

(1) For which Christ died --clsa 53:5 "He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His tripes we are healed."

(2) Which we must confess and forsak

2

Jo 1:9 "If we CONFESS our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanses us from all unrighteousness." - :...Isa 55:7 "Let the wicked FORSAKE his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him RETURN unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our

(3) Which wil I not confront you after deat -- sa 31:34b "I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remembe:F their sin no more." --ILLOS1: Should we mention our sins, He will say, "What sins? I remember them no more."

, ~ - 103:12 "As far as the east is from the west, so V ~ ar hath He removed our transgressions from us." t ~ Mic 7:19b "Thou wilt cast all their sins into the ' depths of the sea. 11

2. Because of The Proven Power of Christ over Death --Matt 28:5-6 "And the angel said ... I know that you seek Jesus which has been crucified. He is not here; for He is risen!" (1) Which confirms your faith in Him as God's Son

--Rom 1:4 "And declared (proven) to be the Son of God with power ... by the resurrection from the dead."

(2) Which guarantees your resurrection --I Cor 15:20 "Now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."

II. THE PLACE TO LOOK FOR CHRIST --Luke 24:5b-6a "Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is

not here, but is risen!"

1. Which Is Not Among the Dead --ILLUS: Many people will spend this Easter Day, even as did Mary Magdalene and her friends on that first Easter

Page 8: Luke 24;1-12 4-19-92 S417,P1-5 k-vri1 W~,f-4library.hsutx.edu/mcbride/Luke/Luke_24-1-12-e.pdf · pla ce where t he Lord lay, " ~[/! · is no remission. " 1. ~~_£a use of tne f r

2. That Christ Goes Before Us --Mark 16:7b "He goeth before you into Galilee."

4. That Must Be Urgently Proclaimed --Matt 28:8 "And they departed guickly ... and did run to bring His disciples word." --ILLUS: Vance Havner once told of a meeting in Indianapolis many years ago on "Ho to Reach the Masses." One day, during the meeting, a young preacher stood on a street corner and began to preach. Soon such a huge crowd had gathered that they had to move indoors where they soon filled the main floor. Yet their service had to be shortened to make way for the convention on "How to Reach the Masses." Havner pointed out, "While the convention was discussing "How to Reach the Masses," Dwight L. Moody was outside doing_ it!"

Mooa y had learned well the lesson of the empty tomb that the gospel must be urgently proclaimed.

Which May Lead Others To Belief in Christ --John 20:8 (READ) "He SAW and BELIEVED." --ILLUS: Jim, a deacon in his church, learned of a new family that had moved near him. Sun Lee and his family were Vietnamese refugees. They had no possessions, knew no one, needed help in every way.

Jim began by helping them get food and Sun a good job. Jim wanted so much to tell Sun Lee about Christ, but he did not know Vietnamese and Sun knew little English.

One day, Jim felt he knew enough Vietnamese to tell Sun Lee about Christ. The more he talked, the more confusing it seemed to get. Sun Lee would repeat in Vietnamese a little of what Jim said in English. Finally, Jim decided to give up trying and to learn more Vietnamese.

Sun Lee at this point blurted out, "Is your God like you? If he is, I want to know him." Jim explained that Christ was greater than he was--far greater.

Jim had thought for all those months he was not communicating the gospel. But he was. It was the power of nconscious influence!
