Luke 9:18-19

18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and

his disciples were with him, he asked them,

“Who do the crowds say I am?” 19 They replied,

“Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah;

and still others, that one of the prophets of long

ago has come back to life.”

John 14:6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 10:30I and the Father are one.

John 8:58Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!

Luke 9:20“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”

Matthew 16:17

Blessed are you, Peter, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.

Luke 9:22And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

Matthew 16:22-2322 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

“Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen

to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get

behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to

me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God,

but merely human concerns.”

Luke 9:23-2423 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

The Cost of Discipleship

Luke 9:57-62

Luke 9:57-5857 As they were going along the road,

someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

Luke 9:59-6059 And He said to another, “Follow Me.”

But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:61-6261 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first

permit me to say good-bye to those at home.” 62

But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

There’s a cost to becoming a disciple of Jesus

Luke 14:25-2725 Now large crowds were going along with Him;

and He turned and said to them,26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Mark 10:28-3028 Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

God comes first
