As we slowly return to normal and shelter in place restrictions are eased, I stand in awe of our community’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. By adhering to the county Health Officer’s orders, we are bending the curve and saving lives.
For this, we owe a debt of gratitude to our “Unsung Heroes”, the frontline workers including our teachers, sanitation workers, truck and bus drivers, grocery workers, police, firefighters, nurses and so many others who have worked so hard to keep our society running during the coronavirus pandemic.
I’d especially like to thank the nearly 2,000 volunteers who have stepped up to

As Brisbane, the State of California and San Mateo County move into the next phases of opening up our economic and social policies
I urge all of us to continue to do what is right, and to respect the needs of all our residents and businesses. Some may want to move slower within the guidelines for reopening and some to move faster within the guidelines.
These will be choices that every individual family or business will need to decide for themselves as to the level of comfort that they are able to keep themselves, their workers, and their families safe.
The State will be publishing guidelines that businesses will need to meet in order to open. These “checklists” will be subject to change as the situation changes on the ground.
The City will make every attempt to keep up with the new mandates and guidelines, and will continue to publish them on our website. With your help, we can continue to keep our community as safe as possible, and minimize risk to all of us.

As we surpass 60 days of social distancing and self-isolation, some glimmers of hope are beginning to shine through for our business community. Brisbane business BeautyFix and Brisbane chamber member Parle Enterprises (based in Burlingame) have each received one of the 100 SMC Strong grant applications. There were over 1200 applications submitted for this funding. In addition, 7 Mile House and The Burrow (Boba Guys) have reopened for business.
Pivoting in a PandemicHowever for many businesses, difficult
decisions remain about how to proceed in a business climate unlike any we have experienced. The Brisbane Chamber of Commerce is calling on all consultants, CPAs, business attorneys, bookkeepers, marketing and branding specialists etc. to help our community. This is the time to give back if you are capable of offering your services free of charge to businesses who need help to survive. Please email me at madison@

For others, pivoting during this time has allowed businesses to remain operational. If you have started a new business, no matter the size, and need our help to get the word out, please let us know. assist the county and our nonprofits during this crisis.
I co-sponsored a resolution honoring these “Unsung Heroes” that unanimously passed the board at its May 5 meeting.
One individual diagnosed with the virus, 38-year-old Ken Loo of Daly City, was in ICU and fearing the worse. He rapidly fell ill in early March and famously told his wife, “babe, don’t let me die.” Ken, with the support of his wife Clarissa and children, was released from the hospital in mid-April and returned home to a heroes welcome by his friends, members of the Daly City Council and police and firefighters.
I was proud to present Ken’s wife with a proclamation honoring his bravery as he witnessed a parade of fire trucks and other vehicles pass by his home honking support for Ken’s recovery. It was an incredibly inspiring event that proves we can beat this virus with love and support.
Seton Medical Center has roared back to life after being nearly shut down just two months ago. It has been secured by the state to house and care for COVID-19 patients temporarily and the hospital’s owner, Verity, has agreed to sell the hospital to a new operator, Advanced Healthcare Management Corporation of Los Angeles.
AHMC bought the two facilities for $40 million and the deal is expected to close before September.
As more people have lost their jobs because of the virus, I am incredibly grateful to our nonprofit partners who have provided food to our most vulnerable during this crisis.
The Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club, in partnership with Second Harvest, opened a food bank at the Bayshore School in Daly City. More than 350 individuals in their vehicles were able to access boxes of food for their families in a safe manner. The boxes were gone in an astonishing 30 minutes. Before the crisis, there were already families in need in our communities, but the virus has amplified the need.

Brisbane School District Oversight CommitteeThe Brisbane School District Board of Trustees is asking for at least
one member of the business community to serve on the Citizens’ Oversight Committee. The establishment of a committee is required by Prop 39 whenever a school bond is passed in order to ensure funds are spent only on specific projects approved by the bond. The committee also reviews annual financial and performance audits and provides information to the public detailing how funds were spent. The committee is expected to meet quarterly and all interested participants are encouraged to reach out to Administrative Coordinator, Aida Gamba at 415-604-5287 or by email: [email protected] for an application and other information. The deadline to apply is June 1st.
Shelter in Place ModificationsEffective May 18th, San Mateo County will move to Phase 2 of Shelter
in Place in accordance with the state. Phase 2 allows the reopening of retail (curbside pickup and delivery), manufacturing and logistics operations, office workplaces, limited personal services, and outdoor museums. Each workplace has specific guidelines that must be followed in addition to these basic requirements: 1) facilities must asses the risks and develop a site-specific protection plan 2) train employees how to limited the spread of COVID-19 and how to screen themselves for symptoms 3) implement individual control measures and screenings 4) develop disinfecting protocols 5) institute physical distancing guidelines.
