Evaluation of groundwater sources in the municipality of FalkenbergOccurrance, storage and planning

• The municipality of Falkenberg need more detailed knowledge about its groundwater resources and how to handle them in the strategic planning

• Aim• Assess the importance of groundwater within the water cycle in

selected parts of the municipality• Propose sites suitable for storage of groundwater• Propose sites for storage of water in wetlands• Provide useful decision support for strategic planning

• Data sources: drilled boreholes, groundwater levels, spring flow rates, etc.

• Performed in collaboration with researchers at Chalmers and the Geological Survey of Sweden as part of an ongoing research project.

– Overallaim:istoestimatetheeconomicvalueoftheLakeBolmen,includingalldifferentvariousecosystemservices,suchasdomesticwater(drinkingwater),irrigation,recreation,scenicvalues,maintenanceoffisheriesandbiodiversity,andecosystemfunction

Screeningofmicropollutants indrinkingwater

– Background:300milliontonsofsyntheticchemicalsareusedannuallyLargeamountsofchemicalscontinuouslyreachnaturalwaters,andcancontaminatedrinkingwatersources.Conventionaldrinkingwatertreatmentisineffectiveinremovingmicropollutants,withPBTproperties,i.e.,chemicalsthatarehighlypersistent(P),liabletobioaccumulate (B),andtoxic(T).

– Overallaim:Theaimsoftheprojectaretoi)applyscreeningmethodsusing(highresolution)massspectrometry,ii)seektoidentifyemergingmicropollutants inwaterorsediment,andiii)tracesourcesforofpollution.Inthisproject,thestudentshouldhavelaboratoryexperienceandbeinterestedinanalyticalchemistry.

RiverGötaÄlv:hydrodynamicmodelling ofcontaminant transport

Chemical contamination ofwater sources can poserisksforhumanhealth andtheaquaticenvironment.TheriverGötaälvisadrinking water sourcefor700000consumers inmunicipalities located along theriver,including thecityofGothenburg.Inaddition,there isalong-termambitiontoimprove thewater quality inthedownstream partoftheriverinordertoallow swimminginthecentralpartsofthecityofGothenburg.Ahydrodynamicmodel oftheriverwas previously developed andapplied tosimulate thefate andtransportoffaecal contamination.Inthis project,thetaskistoinvestigate thefate andtransportofchemical contaminants (e.g.heavy metals andpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)intheriverbymeans ofhydrodynamic modelling.Qualifications:We are looking forastudentwith abackground incivilorenvironmental engineering,orequivalent.Itisofgreat value if you have some experience ofmodelling,inparticular theMIKEsuite (byDHI),andworking with GIS.Contact:MiaBondelind,[email protected] KarinBjörklund,[email protected]

Developkeyperformanceindicatorstodeterminethehydraulicperformanceofthedisinfectionbarrier

Thewatertreatmentplant(WTP)mustsupplytheconsumerswithsafedrinkingwaterdespiterapidlychangingrawwaterqualityorirregulardemandofwater.Thefailureofthedisinfectionstepmayhaveextensivehealthandeconomicconsequences.Aim:Theoverallaimofthisprojectistodevelopkeyperformanceindicatorstodeterminethehydraulicperformanceofthedisinfectionbarrier.Suggestedkeyperformanceindicatorsthatdeterminetheflowinthetankareforexamplethegeometryofthetank(e.g.thelengthtowidthratio),theuseofbafflesandtheirorientation,theinletandoutletconfiguration.Severalindexesfordescribingthehydraulicefficiencyareavailableandtheycoverphenomenasuchasshort-circuiting(e.g.t_10 or t_16/t_50),deadzones(stagnantwater)andmixing(t_10/t_90,MorillIndex t_90/t_10,σ^2).Howtobestevaluatethehydraulicperformanceisstilldebated.Usually,t_10isdifficulttodetermineandinsteadahydraulicfactort_10/Tcanbereadfromatable.Thehydraulicfactorrangesfrom0-1wheretheflowapproachesaplugflowforalargerhydraulicfactor.Ithasprovendifficulttochoosethecorrecthydraulicfactorthatwillrepresenttheflowinthetankinpractice.Ithasalsobeendemonstratedthatthefactorisinconclusivefordescribingthehydraulicefficiencyofthetank.Theuncertaintywhendeterminingthetimetposesaproblemwhencarryingoutariskassessment.Poorqualityofinputdatawilleventuallygivealargeuncertaintyintheoutputfortheriskassessment.TheprojectwillcoverAliteraturereviewtodefineavailableperformanceindicators.AsurveyamongchlorinationtanksinSweden.Atselectedwatertreatmentplants,carryouttracerstudiesanddeterminetheresidencecurvetoevaluatetheidentifiedperformanceindicators.Moreinformation:MiaBondelind,[email protected]
