Course Overview: The purpose of the Evolving Strategies in Lung Cancer Diagnosis
and Treatment Symposium is to educate physicians and healthcare professionals
about the most innovative treatment methods for patients diagnosed with Non-Small
Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Along with offering a morning plenary session, two
break-out sessions will be conducted concurrently in the afternoon that will focus on

The faculty of the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program at the UK Markey Cancer Center recognizes the need to educate physicians and healthcare professionals about the diagnostic and treatment approaches for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. Statistics reveal that Kentucky leads the nation in deaths and incidences of lung cancer. Nationally, lung cancer causes more deaths than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Thus, defi ning the appropriate work-up and therapy for this devastating disease is of paramount importance to primary care physicians, medical and radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, surgeons and other related professionals. Along with the therapeutic and diagnostic aspects of the NSCLC, it is also essential for physicians to understand the role of symptom management and palliative care. This symposium seeks to expand our under-standing of the treatment of NSCLC. Overall, the faculty considers it essential to provide a comprehensive educational program for physicians and healthcare professionals in Kentucky and the region.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in
the world today. In 2007, lung cancer will account
for approximately 15% of all cancer diagnoses and
29% of all cancer deaths. It is the second most
diagnosed cancer in men and woman (after pros-
tate and breast, respectively), but it is the number
one cause of death from cancer each year in both men and women.
The Markey Cancer Center is very pleased to partner with the Lexington
Foundation in presenting what I believe to be an outstanding CME
program focused on this important disease.
A distinguished faculty composed of UK physicians and experts from
some of America’s best known cancer programs will discuss the ap-
proach to lung cancer, from innovative radiation oncology for non-small
cell lung cancer; techniques for symptom management and palliative
care in all stages of NSCLC; management of lung cancer in elderly
patients; the role of new biologic agents; cancer pain management,
and the solitary pulmonary nodule revisited. The afternoon session will
allow for the attendees to participate in breakout sessions to discuss
symptom management and diagnostic research.
I hope you will join us on November 7, 2008, for what I think will be a
broad-based and valuable education experience.

According to the Center for Disease Control, more
people die from lung cancer that any other type
of cancer. This is true for both men and women.
Smoking is the primary factor, but not all cancer
patients have a history of smoking. The Lexington
Cancer Foundation, Inc. is pleased to partner with
the UK Markey Cancer Center in presenting the 2008 Lung Cancer Sym-
posium: Evolving Strategies in Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment.
We are committed to providing local high-quality continuing education
to physicians and medical professionals from world class authorities.
Our distinguished 2008 faculty includes experts from UK Markey Cancer
Center, MD Anderson, Sloan Kettering, and more. Topics range from
diagnostics, treatment, symptom management, and research.
The LCFI is a non-profi t organization committed to raising awareness
and funds for cancer research, education, and patient care. Please do
not hesitate to register and make your hotel reservations, as we expect
this to be a sold out event.
