Statistics reveal that Kentucky leads the nation in deaths and incidences of lung cancer. Nationally, lung cancer causes more deaths than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Thus, defining the appropriate work-up and therapy for this devastating disease is of paramount importance to primary care physicians, medical and radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, surgeons and other related professionals. Along with the therapeutic and diagnostic aspects of the NSCLC, it is also essential for physicians to understand the role of symptom management and palliative care. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in

the world today. In 2007, lung cancer will account

for approximately 15% of all cancer diagnoses and

29% of all cancer deaths. It is the second most

diagnosed cancer in men and woman (after pros-

tate and breast, respectively), but it is the number

one cause of death from cancer each year in both men and women.

The Markey Cancer Center is very pleased to partner with the Lexington

Foundation in presenting what I believe to be an outstanding CME

program focused on this important disease.

A distinguished faculty composed of UK physicians and experts from

some of America’s best known cancer programs will discuss the ap-

proach to lung cancer, from innovative radiation oncology for non-small

cell lung cancer; techniques for symptom management and palliative

care in all stages of NSCLC; management of lung cancer in elderly

patients; the role of new biologic agents; cancer pain management,

and the solitary pulmonary nodule revisited. The afternoon session will

allow for the attendees to participate in breakout sessions to discuss

symptom management and diagnostic research.

I hope you will join us on November 7, 2008, for what I think will be a

broad-based and valuable education experience.
