Through this sermon series on the psalms, we will hear from psalms that ‘disorient’ us, to go to those places where we literally feel as if we are drowning. By becoming disoriented, we are forced to let go of our false illusions of control and allow ourselves to be ‘reoriented’ with God and the new things that God is doing within a fractured world. The book of Hebrews provides for us images of Jesus that don’t often appear in other New Testament books. Concluding the summer sermon series will be a three- week examination of the Apostles’ Creed, where we will reflect on the triune God as ‘Creator’, ‘Redeemer’, and ‘Sustainer’. The series on the Apostles Creed will last from August 18 through September 1st. On September 8—which is ‘Rally Day’, the day Sunday School resumes—St. Paul’s will go back to TWO (2) Sunday morning worship services, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. In the meantime, more details on this summer’s sermon series will appear later in this newsletter. I only mention this series in my article to entice you to hear from sections of the Bible which aren’t often read or preach on. I pray this sermon series will help us grow and help us gain new perspectives as to the “new things” God is up to in our lives and in the life of St. Paul’s Lutheran Family. *One final note: St. Paul’s council and I are aware that some of you may not be able to join the rest of St. Paul’s community for Sunday morning worship at 9:30 a.m. this summer. NEWSLETTER

I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19)

I have included the above passage from the book of Isaiah to remind us that God is always bringing about “new things”: new possibilities, new hope, new life. The good news proclaims God’s

unconditional love through Christ as a love that restores life and that resurrects that which was dead.

During the summer months, we in the northern hemisphere of the earth see the natural world restored to vibrant hues of green, signs of new life that had sprung forth from that which laid dormant just a few months ago.

It seems no accident that the liturgical color for the Sundays after Pentecost is green; green is the color of life. ‘Green’ represents post-Easter life and rejuvenation, with the sultry breeze of the Holy Spirit animating blades of grass and lush tree branches.

This summer, as we worship together in one, Sunday morning worship service (at 9:30 a.m.), we come together to celebrate newness of life, ever watching for where God might be bringing forth “new things” and where the winds of the Holy Spirit may be blowing.

During the month of June, through the first half of July, we will be hearing from select Psalms, as found in the Narrative Lectionary (NL) The NL serves as an alternate to the three-year Revised Common Lectionary.

The psalms often inspire faith through their poetic rhythms. Yet, the psalms also express lament, fear, anger, frustration, and hope where little hope seems evident.

A list of the specific psalms and themes appear later in this newsletter.

In mid-July, and continuing through mid-August, we will then switch to examining select passages from the book of Hebrews, also found in the Narrative Lectionary. The book of Hebrews provides for us images of Jesus that don’t often appear in other New Testament books.

Concluding the summer sermon series will be a three-week examination of the Apostles’ Creed, where we will reflect on the triune God as ‘Creator’, ‘Redeemer’, and ‘Sustainer’.

In response to this, I will be starting a midweek Holy Communion prayer service on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m., beginning on Weds. July 3rd.

I would like to thank everybody that attended our Annual Congregational Meeting, and helped us move forward into the upcoming fiscal year and beyond. St. Paul’s Family has weathered through a great deal of changes in the last few years. In many ways, I believe that we are moving in a very positive direction from most of those changes. We have challenges that will always be there, but with God’s guidance and gentle hands, we can work through them.

Now that we are somewhat accustomed to the single service at 9:30, we (Pastor Chad and Council) would like to hear feedback from the congregation on the joys and challenges with such, for future possibilities. Thank you to those that spoke up before, and during the Annual Meeting, along with the positive vote.

Once again, thank you for everybody’s input and help to make St. Paul’s Lutheran Family the wonderful church that it is.

Jay Olshen

This is a short message that I hope has meaning. Psalm 22:20 says the poor shall eat and be satisfied. I believe this happening in a big way through all the hands of people doing Gods work, serving in all the countries that food for the poor serves. Thanks to God we also are involved and we can be more involved each week using our change as ‘Our Hands, God’s Work’ The change we provide to ‘Food for The Poor’ can save lives by providing meals for a simple domination of a dime. I pray each week that we become inspired by the Holy Spirit to put some of our change into the ‘Food for The Poor’ basket and know it is saving lives for Jesus sake. Amen.

The following taken from the ‘Food for The Poor’ Annual Report, published in 2018:

FEEDING Facts & Figures

• Thanks to you, in 2018, over 25 million lifesaving meals a month were provided to feed malnourished children and their families.

• Because of your generosity, we are ale to provide 15,000 meals a day, six days a week, to feed the hungry at our feeding center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Through you, ‘Food for The Poor’ supports hundreds of food-generating projects, and other projects and programs that help the poor like the ones listed in the rest of the report

New Office Furniture Needed! With the transition taking place in St. Paul’s office, the time has come to replace the worn, dilapidated furnishings in the church secretary’s office. It’s unfortunate that the furniture wasn’t replaced before Renee Woslum’s retirement. Nonetheless, it is important for the church office to be furnished with a nice-looking, functional desk / credenza / computer desk, as Pastor Chad begins the search process for Renee’s successor. Pastor Chad and congregation president Jay Olshen would like to raise monetary donations to purchase new furnishings. Please contact Pastor Chad or Jay if you would like to help these much-needed upgrades! Thank you in advance!

Installation of 2019-2020 Council MembersAt St. Paul’s Annual Congregational meeting, held on June 9th, two new members were elected to a three-year term on St. Paul’s Church Council: Carol Arneson and Jere Schultz. Doug Thunder, current council member and Treasurer, was re-elected to a second, three-year term. These leaders will be installed on Sunday, July 14th during the 9:30 a.m. worship service.

After worship, we will celebrate these NEW council members, and give thanks to the council members who are going off of council: Charlotte LaCombe (there was one vacancy during the 2018-19 fiscal year).

We give thanks to all of our congregation’s leaders!

THANK YOU, RENEE!

A sad note: Renee Woslum has announced that she will be retiring as church secretary, effective July 1st. The people of St. Paul’s are grateful for her service as secretary! For over five years, Renee managed the weekly grind of worship booklets and announcements, the monthly newsletter, the congregation’s report to the ELCA, compiling the reports for the annual Congregational meeting, keeping the parish records up to date, and much, much more! Most importantly, though, we thank Renee being the friendly presence in the church office, representing St. Paul’s Lutheran Family to the community with warmth, compassion, humor, and tons of grace!

On Sunday, August 18th, St. Paul’s will be hosting an appreciation reception in Renee’s honor, after worship. A reminder: worship will be at 9:30 a.m.; Renee’s reception will begin around 10:45 a.m.). St. Paul’s council and Pastor Chad will assist in planning this special ‘coffee fellowship’ reception.

Please note: this is NOT a ‘farewell’! Renee still plans to be active at St. Paul’s with the Christian Education committee, planning and volunteering annually for Vacation Bible School, volunteering to help her successor in the church office, and becoming involved with new ministry opportunities!

Please mark Sunday, Aug. 18th onto your calendars and be sure to send a card or note of thanks to all that Renee has done, being the ‘public face’ and ‘voice’ of St. Paul’s Lutheran Family as church secretary!
