Excerpts from John Stewart’s News Letter 31 January 2015 Brief Committee report The full committee met on Wednesday night 28 January to get the year underway, and the first item was to elect a new Vice-President John Stewart had stepped up from V-P to P with Wendy Gibb’s resignation at the end of 2014. Guy Wright put his hand up for the job. Anique Holm has recently upgraded the web site and there are now more pages and more options. If you haven’t visited for while check it out at www.newbrightonphotoclub.org.nz

File Name Criteria for the Monthly Competitions

Digital This year the file name data is 42015xn_Image Title_Author’s Name

All digital images start with a “4”. After judging those awards are renamed with a “1” for honours/gold, “2” for accepted/silver and a “3” for highly commended/bronze. Not awarded stays as a “4”. 2015 is the current year. x and n are variables where x is your grade (A, B,or C) and n is the competition number (1 for 1st open, 2 fir 1st set subject, 3 for 2nd open etc) Please ensure that you have capitals for place names etc and your author’s name, as this year what you have in the image file name will replicate through to the web page (if your image gets awarded and is eligible for the web). Examples 42015A1_Fun in the sun_John Stewart good 2015A1-Fun in the sun-john stewart bad (no “4”, dashes, no underscores, no caps for author’s name) 42015D9_Fun in the sun_John Stewart bad (no D grade, no competition “9”) 42015B2_Holiday Activity_Peter Posa good 42015B2_HOLIDAY ACTIVITY_PETER bad (all caps, no surname) Prints If you want to see your awarded prints in Shutter Flutters or on the web WE MUST have a digital copy, so when you enter prints can you please email in a file to Guy, but as we don’t need to renumber the file (and we need to know it is a print) use the following P2015xn_Image Title_Author;s Name Exactly the same as for the digital file apart from “P” replacing the “4”.

NEW COMPETITION

With the Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ) changing nearly

all the interclub competitions to “themed sets” we can no longer just look

for our six best digitals or six best prints and enter these. We need images

with a common theme.

The committee has decided to run an extra, digital only competition, con-

currently with the normal eight monthly competitions following a specific

set subject – yes we have our four set subjects during the year, but this

extra one will feature the one subject to run for the year.

Committee members put forward ten options and these were numbered 1

to 10, and the Powerball number in last Saturday’s Lotto draw selected the

subject for the year, which is “round shape”. So, get your thinking caps on

and shoot some round objects (balls, plates, wheels, some flowers, the

sun, full moon, etc etc).

We are going to run this competition as a merger between our old

President’s Challenge and what Christchurch Photographic Society do in

their Monthly Digital Challenge.

The Photographer’s Dream

A photographer dreamed

Of a telephoto lens

Capturing light waves

From beginning to end.

Since time unleashed

When the Big Bang leaped

And particles began life’s history

In swirling clouds he wondered how

He might picture a piece of the mystery.

Through polished glass converging past

Planets, stars and seas

Of swirling waves that danced and swayed

No less than windswept trees.

As he focused his dream glass

Where present meets past

And depth of field is wide;

Where the image is clear and light streaks steer,

Far away from the photographer’s eye.

With shutter speed set like a fast speed jet

Blazing through the blue-white wispy above

Turning his wings on the bird that sings

And a girl who once stole his love.

Racing through time while continuing to climb

Higher through the prism of light

His finger feathers the button below

Capturing the moment in flight.

Lingering there in pure mid-air

Like a magic carpet in the wind;

Until jolted by the sun on its morning run

While still dreaming of that telephoto lens.

Maybe today, perhaps tomorrow,

He’ll capture the illusive the beast;

The athlete who strives for the best inside

Or the homeless sleeping in the streets.

He’ll stop small birds he’s seen and heard

With their colorful feathers, breast and crown;

And children playing in autumn leaves

Scattered on the ground.

Weddings and rings, flowers in spring,

Butterflies, wistful and bright;

Pollinating bees and hives in the trees

Or a harvest moon late at night.

Meadows and mountains, free flowing fountains

Ancient temples in faraway places;

Fireworks up high on the 4th July

Olympics and fast car races.

But now fully awakened he knows he’s mistaken

About the focal length in his dream glass;

Lens lust is a photographer’s must

But this too, he knows, must pass.

Like water flowing in the river

And wind passing through thin air;

The world he sees through his own eyes

Is a wonder beyond compare.
