Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to our weekly newsletter. It has been a short week with the bank holiday. I hope you all enjoyed the extended weekend.

Year 11 examinations start in earnest next week. Students will be following their new timetable and there will be breakfast revision sessions available for all morning examinations in The Learning Hub. These were incredibly popular last year and students were able to pick up a drink and food as well as finalising what they need to know for the examination. The students are thoroughly prepared and all the staff at LHS wish them the very best for their examinations.

One impact for the rest of the school is that on certain days break will be at the later time of 11.20am due to the length of the GCSE examinations.

I would like to thank all students for their support with the non-uniform day, to raise funds for the charity Vasculitis UK. Miss Matthews has also challenged herself to run 1000 miles this year, in support of this worthwhile cause.

Once again, we have welcomed our local primary schools; this time for tennis. There has been fantastic representation and the students have clearly had a very enjoyable time. More details are included in the newsletter.

Have a fantastic weekend.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

thought OF THE WEEK

word OF THE WEEK

‘liberty’noun

the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s behaviour or

political views

“Liberty is the freedom of the individual to express, without external

hindrances, his personality.” G. D. H. Cole

What does individual liberty mean? Why is it important?

How can we ensure that we keep our freedom?

This week’s book of the week is our current book club focus. Running on the Roof of the World by Jess Butterworth is a vivid, richly atmospheric story of adventure, survival and hope.

Tash and her best friend Sam live in Tibet. After a man in Tash’s village sets himself on fire in protest of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, soldiers raid their village and arrest Tash’s parents. Setting out to seek help from the Dalai Lama in India, Tash and Sam undertake a dangerous journey across the Himalayas.

Accelerated Reader level 4.1

The Learning Hub Book QuizOur student librarians outdid themselves this week by organising a challenging and fun book quiz. The students came up with all 27 questions themselves and were expert quizmasters. A big shout out to Jack Millen and Charlotte Johnson for putting in so much hard work. It was a huge success with students across all year groups taking part. Elder White was our winner with 22 out of 27 questions correct, very closely followed by Sir Reads-A-Lot.

Well done everyone who took part!

Partnership Plus ConferenceOn Thursday 10th May, we were delighted to host over 20 of our colleagues, from across a range of Warwickshire schools, to share our best practice in raising the level of challenge in the classroom. Some of our teachers demonstrated how they are making a real difference in raising the level of challenge for students in the classroom. Everybody took something away from the event to implement in their own classrooms.

We continue to strive to deliver the very best education for our students. An integral part of this is the sharing of best practice within school and across our partnership schools.

I would like to thank the following staff for leading engaging and informative presentations:

Miss Altha Begum, Mr Sam Lowry, Mr Tom Maynard, Mrs Elaine Bown, Mr Simon Clarkson, Mrs Emma Cochraneand Miss Kay Cowling.

County Cup FinalOn Tuesday a group of students travelled to Welford Road to watch many of last year's Year 11 take on Market Harborough in the Colts County Cup final. The quality of rugby on show was fantastic, and despite it being a close affair for most of the game, Lutterworth's superior skill showed and they ran out deserved winners 16-3.

Well done to Harry Hey, Justin Trombas, Ethan Swan, Sam Baker, Aaron Kirk, Will Hooseman who all played their part on the pitch.

Can I also say a big thank you to Mr Maynard and Mrs Tebbatt. Whilst I was tied up with other duties, they led the trip.

Let's hope Lutterworth reach the final next season and we can go again.

GCSE Food Preparation and NutritionOur Year 10’s have been learning about the origins of food and how it’s processed. They had a go at filleting mackerel and trout to help practice their preparation skills.

Sports Highlights

TennisThe tennis season got underway on Thursday night with our U15’s travelling to Leicester Grammar School. Despite some good performances, Leicester Grammar were victors.

We hosted the Years 5 and 6 primary schools level 2 tennis competition with over 12 teams competing. A huge congratulations must go to Gilmorton B and Gilmorton A who came first and second respectively.

CricketWe would like to thank Lutterworth Cricket Club for allowing us to use their facilities and have access to their coaching team. All cricketers had their first training session of the season under the guidance of Mr Stocks and Lutterworth’s overseas player.

Bag Packing - FundraisingThis Sunday, Year 7 and 8 sport students will be bag packing at Morrisons Lutterworth from 10.00am till 4.00pm. Feel free to pop down and support them in raising funds for a scrummage machine and netball posts.
