The Pre Public Examinaons have now finished for our Year 11 students. They have done incredibly well in how they have approached the examinaons. We wish our Year 7 students and accompanying staff an excellent weekend trip to Belgium and France. The students will learn an incredible amount in a short space of me and experience 'The Last Post' at the Menin Gate. We have checked all of our travel arrangements and they are unaffected by the industrial acon. We will keep parents informed over the weekend if any travel arrangements are disrupted. Finally, I would like to let parents know the sad news that our strings teacher Judith Mahews has passed away. She has taught numerous students over the years and has been an incredible servant to the school, including leading the strings ensemble. We pass our sympathies to her family and friends. Have a nice weekend.

Dear Parents / Carers

Welcome to our weekly newsletter. The Pre Public Examinations have now finished for our Year 11 students. They have done incredibly well in how they have approached the examinations. I have no doubt that they feel tired as we approach the end of term.

Next Friday is our Christmas Jumper Day. Students can wear non-uniform with their Christmas jumper and the donation is £1.

We wish our Year 7 students and accompanying staff an excellent weekend trip to Belgium and France. The students will learn an incredible amount in a short space of time and experience 'The Last Post' at the Menin Gate. We have checked all of our travel arrangements and they are unaffected by the industrial action. We will keep parents informed over the weekend if any travel arrangements are disrupted.

Finally, I would like to let parents know the sad news that our strings teacher Judith Matthews has passed away. She has taught numerous students over the years and has been an incredible servant to the school, including leading the strings ensemble. We pass our sympathies to her family and friends.

Have a nice weekend.

Parents of former students

If you have a child that is now starting university, an apprenticeship or a job and would like to come in to the High School on Thursday 19th December for the morning, please contact Richard Salter on [email protected]. The purpose of the visit will be to work with students in Year 9 who are starting to think about their option choices for GCSE and we think their opinions and advice on this would be really valuable.

Book of the Week: 'The Magpie' by Gary Toward

This week our book of the week is the debut novel of author Gary Toward. We are incredibly happy to announce he will be making a return visit to the school on Monday.

It is December 1913 and Detective Constable Frank Bolem has a murder to solve. The victim is found drowned in the River Wear with a vicious knife wound to his lower back. There are no witnesses and no clues. A few months later more bodies are found and Bolam cannot find a way to fight the deadlock in his most perplexing case. These are turbulent times, with the country in the middle of an attritional war. Bolam joins the army to track down the cold blooded killer.

You can pick up your copy of The Magpie for only £5 on Monday with the added bonus of getting it signed by the author himself. Come to the Learning Hub at lunchtime.

“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves

you.”Elbert Hubbard

Author Visit - Gary TowardWe are excited to announce that Gary Toward will be returning to the school after an incredibly successful visit last year. Gary will be talking to year 9 students about The Magpie, his historical crime novel set in WW1. His presentation will take pupils on a journey through time, incorporating the history of the period his book is set in and inspiring students to stretch themselves with their own writing.

There will be a book signing in the Learning Hub at lunchtime. Gary’s book can be purchased for £5 on Monday.

Aviation Careers Advice with visiting pilot Sam ReadOn Thursday we had a fantastic session with Sam Read, a local pilot who kindly volunteered his time to offer advice and talk about his experience in aviation. Students were riveted by Sam’s expertise and knowledge and were full of questions about the industry. I think it’s safe to say some of our students might take to the sky’s and pursue a career in aviation after Sam’s invaluable advice.

Sports Highlights

Girls RugbyOn Tuesday this week Mr Wheatcroft and I had the pleasure of taking ten of our KS4 Girls out to a Rugby Tournament at Fullhurst Community College. This was the main fixture of our rugby calendar this year and, potentially, the last large tournament the girls would get to play in before the season is over.

The girls faced some tough competition from Fullhurst, Hinckley Academy and Welland Park but we are thrilled to announce that they won all of their games – making them the undefeated tournament champions! Game scores were as follows…

LHS vs Hinckley Academy = 28-10

LHS vs Welland Park = 47-29

LHS vs Fullhurst = 21-12

There were some spectacular individual performances, too many to name in fact, but special mention goes to Lily Adams who was voted consistently by the opposing teams as Player of the Match. Every single girl we took with us played the best rugby we’ve ever seen and we were spectacularly impressed from the sidelines!

It’s with sadness that we come towards the end of the rugby season for our fantastic Year 11 girls, but we do look forward to more wins next year with our Year 10s. We need a few more numbers to maintain such a fantastic KS4 team next year though, so if you fancy seeing some glory on the rugby pitch let us know!

Huge thanks to all the girls for their hard work, attitude, teamwork and all-round rugby brilliance!
