Experimental models have always played a significant role in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor

Cars, from the first – 1EX, built in 1919 – to the most recent – 101EX, built in 2006. Unlike a

concept car, the experimental models developed by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have always been

fully functioning vehicles, residing in a tangible world of wood, leather and metals rather than

clay and foam. EX cars offer designers and engineers the opportunity for real-world innovation

and have been used to showcase new components and engineering techniques as well as exte-

rior and interior designs. “Modern automotive engineering is a balance of creativity, innovation

and application. 200EX is an opportunity to assess these new ideas,” explains Helmut Riedl,

Director of Engineering.

100EX was the first experimental car unveiled after Rolls-Royce Motor Cars was relaunched

under BMW Group ownership in 2003. Revealed at the Geneva motor show in 2004, the

two-door, four-seat convertible was built to mark 100 years of Rolls-Royce motor car design and

engineering. Just two years later, 101EX was presented, which explored modern coupé design.

Both of these cars inspired production models that not only closely resemble their EX progenitors

but have also redefined luxury motoring in the modern age.

10

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 13: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

Following on from this success, the same group of designers and engineers has created 200EX, itself pointing

the way to RR4, a new Rolls-Royce model scheduled for production in 2010. The brief for 200EX? To create a

modern, lithe and dynamic Rolls-Royce that bears all the hallmarks of the great cars that have gone before it:

effortless performance, unparalleled refinement, exquisite quality and confident design.

11

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 14: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

200EX has a dynamic edge to its styling and is noticeably less formal than previous models. Its size, style and expres-

sion broaden the appeal of the car, making it more appropriate for a wider range of circumstances. “200EX is a tour-

ing saloon with more than a little panache and perhaps more bravado than one might have expected from Rolls-Royce

Motor Cars,” says Cameron. “What you see is a modern car that is immediately recognisable as a true Rolls-Royce,

even from angles that obscure the grille and Spirit of Ecstasy. Design elements such as the elevated prow, long bonnet,

short front overhang, sharply raked A-pillar and elegant tail give 200EX an air of informal presence – powerful but

unobtrusive.”

The exterior design is dominated by large, uninterrupted surfaces, while finely sculptured horizontal lines add definition

and geometric precision. In combination, the upward-sweeping sill line and low-cut roof create a powerful profile. The

tapered rear is enhanced by powerful shoulders and flanks that draw in sharply, narrowing as they flow from the rear

wings to the tail-lights.

12

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 15: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The rear-hinged coach doors give the car a natural presence and sense of theatre. Revived in 2003 on the Phantom,

this signature feature lends added functionality and style to the design. Opening through a generous 83 degrees, the

coach doors offer the widest rear access in the car industry as well as providing the warmest of welcomes to those

about to step inside.

At the front, a pair of LED headlamps flank the latest evolution of the world’s most famous grille. “We wanted this to be

less reminiscent of the traditional ‘Parthenon’ style and more like a jet intake,” says Ian Cameron. The sides of the intake

have been curved inwards and the vanes set back into the opening. It’s a more dynamic form that moves on from the

design first seen on the Phantom Drophead Coupé.

The exterior of 200EX is finished in Darkest Tungsten, which contrasts with the silver satin finish applied to the bonnet

and A-pillar. Seven-spoke, 20-inch wheels complete the visual impact of the exterior.

13

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 16: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

Within 200EX, Interior Designer Alan Sheppard has accomplished a contemporary atmosphere, incorporating the

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars principles of fine materials and peerless comfort. The space is filled with natural light, which

brings in a real sense of the outside world. However, substantial doors and a high shoulder line ensure that occupants

feel cosseted and protected. In the rear, the intimate ambience of the lounge seat is emphasised by its position behind

the C-pillar, heightening the sense of privacy.

Naturally, the finest materials have been used. Elegant, frosted lamps and chrome door handles feature, while details

include traditional violin key switches, eyeball air vents, opaque dials and refined instrumentation.

The dashboard has been kept deliberately clear; it is spacious in its design and has an intuitive layout. The controls

are neatly sculptured, with more important functions emphasised by accents of chrome. The soft light of the instrument

panel glows through the familiar black-rimmed steering wheel, which itself incorporates a number of violin keys as well

as an ergonomic roller-ball control.

The interior of 200EX is finished in supple, natural grain Crème Light leather, with Cornsilk carpets and cashmere blend

headliner. The featured wood veneer is Santos Palissander, chosen for its contemporary look and striking grain.

“200EX is a modern execution of timeless Rolls-Royce elegance, breaking with some areas of tradition but retaining the

core values that make our marque unique,” says Chief Executive Officer Tom Purves. “We expect the more informal, ag-

ile design to broaden the appeal of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, attracting people who appreciate its fusion of refinement,

new technology and contemporary style.”

On February 4, Mission Motors unveiled a revolutionary new vehicle at TED 2009. The Mission One is the world’s fast-

est production all-electric motorcycle. Mission Motors CEO, Forrest North, along with lead designer Yves Béhar, founder

of fuseproject, presented the vehicle in development onstage to the entire TED audience. Mission Motors exhibited the

vehicle throughout the conference at the Kohler LivingHome at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, and were on

hand to discuss the company’s vision for a radically new brand of motorcycles. The company also provided attendees

the opportunity to see inside the product development process through the installation of a motorcycle design studio

inside the Kohler LivingHome.

“The Great Unveiling,” the TED 2009 theme, made a fitting platform for the launch of Mission Motors’ first vehicle,

the Mission One. It is the first production electric sportbike that features uncompromised performance and an iconic

new design created by world-renowned designers Yves Béhar and fuseproject. With a top speed of 150 MPH and

an estimated range of 150 miles, the Mission One rivals gasoline sportbikes while dwarfing the performance of

any other electric motorcycle on the market. The electric drivetrain creates a riding experience unlike anything cur-

rently available on a production vehicle. The electric motor’s linear torque curve provides peak torque at zero rpm, a

feature gasoline engines cannot match. The motor delivers faster acceleration than most gasoline sportbikes without

ever having to shift gears.

18

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 21: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The announcement formally debuted Mission Motors, a San

Francisco-based company geared to redefine the world of

performance motorcycles. The company was founded in

2007 by entrepreneurs Forrest North (CEO), Edward West

(President), and Mason Cabot (VP of Engineering).

Building on their backgrounds in engineering, a desire to de-

velop clean vehicles, and a passion for motorcycles, the Mis-

sion Motors founders developed a proprietary high energy

lithium ion battery pack that could provide both the range

and acceleration needed for a high performance sportbike.

The company (named Hum Cycles at the time) placed sec-

ond in the transportation category of the 2007 California

Cleantech Open, the largest cleantech business plan compe-

tition on the West Coast.

Page 22: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

“As a motorcycle enthusiast and engineer I knew I could combine my pas-

sion for motorcycles with my passion for innovation and create a motor-

cycle that truly sets a new standard in the perception of electric vehicles,”

said Forrest North, Founder and CEO, Mission Motors. “With the Mission

One, we’re writing the next chapter in motorcycle design, delivering a

new riding experience without sacrificing performance or design in a zero

emissions vehicle.”

With core engineering underway and an attractive business model, North

and his co-founders turned to Yves Béhar’s fuseproject to create Mission’s

unique brand and creative direction, as well as an iconic industrial design

for the first product. The engineering team at Mission Motors and the

design team at fuseproject worked in close collaboration to design the

Mission One from the ground up, creating a machine that makes a bold

statement about performance, technology, sustainability and design.

”This project was a dream come true: a statement about how design

can make performance and sustainability come together without compro-

mise,” said Yves Béhar. “I believe Mission is an icon for a new era of ef-

ficient and exciting vehicles. Designed to express speed and efficiency in

it’s overall sharp lines, the Mission bike is also highly detailed with special

attention to a riders needs, bringing a high level of product design and

ergonomics to a new generation of performance transportation.”

Alongside the new Gallardo LP 560-4

Spyder, Lamborghini presented two ex-

clusive, highly individualized super sports

cars at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. With

a unique, matt-luster paint finish in matt

blue and all available special equipment

options, this Murciélago LP 640 and Gal-

lardo LP 560-4 demonstrate the virtually

limitless possibilities and expert craftsman-

ship presented through the Ad Personam

individualization program by the special-

ists in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

22

Page 25: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

“Ad Personam offers every Lamborghini customer the opportunity to acquire a completely exclusive vehicle from a

unique brand – one that is perfectly in tune with their own lifestyle,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO

of Automobili Lamborghini. “A super sports car from Lamborghini is always a fundamental expression of the buyer’s

personality. And that is why the highest levels of exclusivity are possible, right through to absolute one-of-a-kind Lam-

borghini vehicles.”

23

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 26: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

“Think the impossible” is the motto of the Lamborghini individualization program. Ad Personam offers a host of pos-

sibilities to bring a highly individual style to the exterior and the interior of a Lamborghini – all the way through to a

Lamborghini like no other.

Both super sports cars presented in Detroit were highly individualized examples–painted in matt blue, an all-new, pow-

erful blue tone with a matt-luster finish. Dressed like this, the Murciélago and the Gallardo are elegant and refined, yet

extremely powerful and dynamic. This is a unique color that fits perfectly to the unique design of a Lamborghini.

24

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 27: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The super sports car brand from Sant’Agata Bolognese

is the only auto maker to have mastered the difficult and

complex craftsmanship required to work with the matt-

luster paint finish. Alongside the new matt blue three more

colors are permanently available in the Ad Personam pro-

gram: Nero Nemesis is a matt-luster black, while the matt

white is called Bianco Canopus; and Marrone Apus refers

to the particularly elegant matt brown finish. In addition,

Lamborghini Ad Personam offers its customers complete

freedom to choose any color imaginable.

25

Page 28: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 is one of the most fascinating

super sports cars of all time, and underscored this in Detroit with

a purist interior finished in Alcantara® with diamond stitching. Not

only are the sports seats upholstered in Alcantara®, but also the

entire interior, including doors and headliner. The cockpit surround

is finished in carbon fiber. The steering wheel features stitched suede

and carbon fiber inlays. The high-gloss black of the Murciélago’s

wheels – in Hermera design – also delivers the perfect contrast to the

matt blue exterior paintwork.

From the first time you lay eyes on their watches, their unique styled designs are etched into your memory. URWERK,

a Switzerland based fine watch company founded in 1995 has taken the rules of watch design set them aside to take

their own path, creating something entirely different from traditional fine watch manufacturers. Introducing URWERK’s

103T: The Tarantula.

Making some improvements from the original UR103, the Tarantula (model number UR103t) incorporates cutting edge

new materials and design techniques that take a radical design to the next level. The traditional Geneva Cross design

of the previous models now incorporates a new shield-like structure that keeps the numbers located on the satellites

hidden until they are absolutely needed.

From a mechanical standpoint the Tarantula is a marvel, with the cross and satellite design weighing in at more than

300 times heavier than traditional watch hands, a factor that requires the finest precision in the manufacturing of its’

components, and in assembling, balancing and regulating the complication. In a few words, URWERK’S master crafts-

men are truly remarkable at what they do. When each hour passes, the satellites perform four 120 degree turns as the

cross makes its cycle before they are ready to complete their task for another hour.

To offset weight, the watch is constructed of high grade titanium

and aluminum alloys, as well as relying on ARCAP 40 (an al-

loy primarily composed of copper and nickel with no magnetic

proprieties and a high resistance to corrosion).

The URWERKs 103T is proof that there is still something new

and original in the world of fine watches; and a worthy testa-

ment to chief designer Martin Frei (master watchmaker), Felix

Baumgartner and the entire URWERK team.

Versace and Lamborghini proudly announced their launch of the new Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Roadster VER-

SACE along with its unique line of accessories. As far as the new super roadster goes, this limited edition Lamborghini

Murciélago LP 640 Roadster VERSACE came to the imagination from the Maison Versace’s designers who joined

forces with designers from the Lamborghini Design Centre. They also collaborated with specialists working on the “Ad

Personam” project which allows buyers to fully customize their Murciélago from interior fittings to exterior color.

Displaying a pastel white attire and adorned with the Versace Greek key motif on the lower part of the doors, the

Roadster is equipped, for the very first time, with a transparent engine hood that reveals the powerful V12 engine. The

cradle seats are clad in black and white leather, while opulent full grain soft nappa leather has been hand-embroidered

with the Versace Greek fret motif on the instrument panel, the doors and the central console.

Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., said: “Our collaboration with Versace

turned out to be an excellent experience and is an example of how we are pursuing our strategy of developing luxury

products outside of luxury sports cars. We are proud to be in this prestigious, Made in Italy partnership with Versace,

which adds to our other recent successes.”

The rigorous design and minimal lines of the Murciélago engine hood inspired the Versace Collection LP 640 range

of accessories. Exclusively crafted in black matte calf skin, models include: a trolley bag, suit carrier, sports bag, as

well as a briefcase, suitcase, gloves, driving shoes, belt, wallet, key ring, beauty case, hat and a pair of jeans. These

hand-made accessories boast traditional craftsmanship, with an edging à la française and a palladium-engraved tag

displaying both the Versace and Lamborghini logos.

This prestigious accessory collection is exclusive to Versace Boutiques and selected Lamborghini. Gianni Versace’s CEO

Giancarlo Di Risio emphasized: “This new supercar and the exclusive Collection LP640 represent a natural evolution of

excellence for both Versace and Lamborghini through the creation of these unique, one-of-a-kind projects.”

Aston Martin will presented the most potent production sports car in the marque’s 95-year history at the

Geneva motor show on 3 March. Based on the hugely successful V8 Vantage, the V12 Vantage features

a 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque with a

top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 kp/h) time of 4.2 seconds.

The latest incarnation of the Vantage family has been designed to provide a unique character, appealing

to different driver tastes and complementing the other models in the current Aston Martin line-up.

41

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 44: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The original V12 Vantage concept was unveiled to guests at the opening of the Aston Martin Design

Studio in December 2007. Continuing the marque’s impressive record of bringing concepts through

to production, Aston Martin engineers have brought the V12 Vantage to market in an incredible 12

months.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “This is the ultimate performance interpretation

of the Vantage range, combining our most agile model with our most powerful engine. It represents the

definitive driving package; providing spectacular performance to ensure a dynamically thrilling and ev-

eryday useable driving experience.

“The V12 Vantage has a unique character, one unlike our other cars. This will appeal to different people

with different tastes, allowing more people to enjoy the Aston Martin experience.

42

Page 45: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

This also illustrates one of Aston Martin’s key strengths – the ability to act quickly and turn concepts and

ideas into reality.”

Designed for the focused driver, every component of the V12 Vantage has been honed with pure driving

enjoyment in mind. Benefitting from race-developed materials and components, and featuring lightweight

carbon fibre; performance and agility have been tuned to perfection.

Visually enticing, the V12 Vantage expresses its performance potential through its purposeful stance cre-

ated by enhanced aerodynamic and cooling aids optically widening the car, while retaining traditional

understated Aston Martin design. Equally inviting, the cosseting interior permits the driver to extract maxi-

mum performance ability from the car while also enjoying customary levels of Aston Martin comfort on

longer journeys. High levels of power and torque are available at all engine speeds making the V12

Vantage responsive and tractable in any driving situation.

The V12 Vantage will be built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire joining

the DBS, DB9 and V8 Vantage model lines which are built in the state-of-the-art production facility combin-

ing hi-tech manufacturing processes with traditional hand-craftsmanship. Production will be limited up to

1,000 examples over the life span of the car, making the V12 Vantage a truly exclusive driver’s car.

Deliveries of the V12 Vantage are expected to commence during quarter three 2009 with prices to be

confirmed at the Geneva motor show.

The 1952 Cadillac Allard J2 Roadster raced by Carroll Shelby is on its way to the auction block at the 22nd annual

Dana Mecum Original Spring Classic Auction taking place May 13-17, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind.

Featuring a 331 cubic-inch Cadillac V-8 engine and 3-speed manual transmission, the Allard J2 has a storied race his-

tory, most notably as a vital player in the launch of Shelby’s career as a professional race car driver.

In March 1952, Shelby was hired by Louisiana businessman Charlie Brown to pilot the Cadillac Allard at the Sports

Car Club of America-sanctioned Pottsboro hill climb. He won the hill climb and went on to capture two more SCCA

regional wins, which brought Shelby to the attention of Aston Martin owner David Brown. Shelby went on to win the

1959 24 Hours of Le Mans race in an Aston Martin DBR1 with co-driver Roy Salvadori.

Perhaps even more important than the wins in the Allard was Shelby’s experience with this race-proven platform, which in-

spired him to eventually create the legendary Cobra by mating a powerful American engine with a lightweight European

chassis. With this combination and a lot of hard work, Shelby took GT World Manufacturer’s Championship in 1965.

Page 49: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

“This 1952 Cad-Allard – serial number 179 and the last of 90

total roadster-bodied J2s built by English manufacturer Sydney

Allard – features the popular and successful platform of a light-

weight chassis and large-displacement engine developed to

challenge European racing marques after World War II,” said

Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction. “Competing and

becoming one of the most successful sports cars in American

racing in the early 1950s puts this Allard in a league of its own.

We’re excited to keep this remarkable car’s history alive at our

upcoming Original Spring Classic Auction.”

Restored to its original black with red leather upholstery color

scheme, the Allard J2 also features what is believed to be the

original Cadillac engine block No. 51 6233874. In addition it

is equipped with:

• Correct Ford three-speed transmission

• Triple Stromberg 48 carbs on a vintage Weiand intake

manifold

• Crane Competition camshaft

• The custom exhaust that was originally built and installed

by a young Mickey Thompson.

47

Page 50: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

In 1997, the Allard J2 was invited to the Monterey Historic Races as part of a special display celebrating honoree Car-

roll Shelby. It was also featured in the documentary “The Great Classic Cars” narrated by Sir Stirling Moss in 1979 as

well as an episode of “Gotta Have It TV” in 2005.

Mecum Auction, high performance and collector car specialists, will offer the Allard J2 on live national TV on Friday,

May 15, 2009. The event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, is open to the general public and tickets are available

at the door for $10. For more information, visit www.Mecum.com.

The Original Spring Classic Auction, which is expected to feature 1,250 vehicles, will be broadcast live on Mecum’s

popular television series, “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More” on HD Theater – Discovery Communications’

first 24-hour high-definition cable network, offering compelling real-world and motorized content.

If you love exotic cars, one look at the GTMULSANNE

Supercar draws you in, captivates you, and leaves

you spellbound, like any thing of beauty attracts men.

Once the initial burst of excitement subsides, and rea-

son again prevails, you want to discover more-specifi-

cations, statistics, performance and above all availability.

The GTMULSANNE Supercar weighs just 2350 lbs., is

race car engineered for performance and safety, and

comes in only one shape - beautiful. Everything else

is custom built to order!

It is available in 400 - 1000 HP, any color, with any

options made my man, in any interior finish desired,

for about $100,000. A one year warranty and ser-

vice at you local garage make it the WORLD’S MOST

AFFORDABLE SUPERCAR!

What makes the GTMulsanne the World’s Most Af-

fordable Supercar? Why is it so affordable? The

GTMulsanne starts out as a kit car (the GTM) made

by Factory Five Racing. The entire car is designed,

engineered, and track-developed by a team of “car

Page 53: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

51

guy” engineers. The car uses GM reliable running

gear and the fantastic Corvette LS2 engine. These are

inexpensive parts as they are already GM designed

and built.

What makes the GTMulsanne the Supercar that it is?

The GTM is an impressive piece of auto engineering

taking five years to develop. The chassis was CAD

CAM designed, using SOLID WORKS software and

FINITE ELEMENT analysis. Its composite body is

wind-tunnel tested leading to a sensuous aerodynamic

shape, with a flat underbody, and weighing only 150

lbs. A 500 HP car has been track-tested by Car and

Driver and was found capable of going 0-60 in 3/0

seconds, the ¼ mile in 11.0 seconds reaching 132

MPH, a 60-0 braking distance of 98 ft., a top speed

of 200 MPH, lateral acceleration of 1.05 G. and 332

lbs. of downforce at 150 MPH, all equaling or beat-

ing every Supercar made!

When David Alan of Alan Autosports discovered

the GTM his life long passion for cars and his expe-

rience owning most of the exotic cars of the world,

all came together. He recognized the excellence of

Factory Five’s design and engineering and saw the

huge potential for the car to become a World-Class

Supercar. He used his extensive knowledge of exotic

cars to further develop the GTM, leading to his trade-

marked GTMulsanne, named after the famous 250

MPH straightaway on the Circuit de la Sarthe’s 24

Hours of LeMans. “I am fortunate enough to be able

to do what a car guy really wants to do- design and

Page 54: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

construct a few dozen examples of the most powerful,

beautiful, Supercar of modern times.”

Everything about the GTMulsanne is upgraded and re-

fined to the highest levels possible. The front, rear and

sides of the car are aerodynamically redesigned for

a more sensual look

and more downforce.

When opened you

see that the underside

of the front and rear

hatches are finished to

the same high quality

as the exterior body.

He interior is totally

redone in high grade

leather hides of your choice, alcantara, exotic woods,

carbon fiber or brushed aluminum. The powertrain is

engineered and upgraded in steps of 100 from 400

to 1000 HP. The exhaust is redesigned leading to

the patent-pending MILD-TO-WILD cockpit-controlled,

ceramic coated, titanium or inconel, free-flowing sys-

tem. Cockpit controlled adjustable shocks and ECU

are installed, as are MOMO wheel, shifter and floor

mat package. Stick or paddle shifter are available.

Both sound insulation and heat insulation are added

to improve the cockpit experience. Braided stainless

brake lines and Willwood or Brembo brakes are add-

ed for improved stopping power. The rear engine

bay and front bay are all powder coated. FORGE-

LINE, O.Z. RACING and DYMAG wheels are used.

Everything possible to

improve, refine, and

upgrade the GTM has

been done, resulting in

the GTMulanne Compo-

nent Supercar, built to

show quality standards.

Alan Autosports has de-

signed and developed

six Editions of the GTMulsanne to give buyers exam-

ples of how their custom built Supercar can be. Or

they may order one of the Six Editions as is, without

making any customizing decision.

As the GTMulsanne is further developed, most of the

improvements will be offered as options, some incor-

porated into every car. You will always be able to

count of the philosophy being the GTMulsanne. It is

52

Page 55: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

not built by high priced designers, engineers, ex-

ecutives, or union labor, just normal “car guys” who

love what they do and do it with skill and pride, at

down to earth costs, insuring that the GTMulsanne

will always be the MOST AFFORDABLE, CUSTOM

BUILT, SUPERCAR IN THE WORLD! Prices start

at $99,900. Every car is under warranty for 12

months and can be serviced and repaired by your

hometown auto mechanic.

Ingolstadt Audi is launching the next variant of its top-of-the-line model. With the R8, the brand has established itself

at the forefront of high-end sports cars from the very start and now comes the R8 V10. Its 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine

churns out 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, which makes for breathtaking performance. With

superior Audi technologies such as quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum body, the innovative all-LED head-

lights, and its striking design, the R8 V10 takes pole position against the competition.

The R8 V10 is the result of cumulative know-how from Audis string of Le Mans victories. Its naturally aspirated engine

combines racing technology such as dry sump lubrication with FSI gasoline direct injection. The ten-cylinder design

is the perfect synthesis for impressive top performance, mighty pulling power, and low weight. Starting in 2009, this

engine will also prove its potential on the worlds racetracks in the new R8 racing car Audi is developing for customer

teams in conformance with the GT3 rules.

57

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 60: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The V10 engine in the production sports car will be almost identical in construction to the one in the racing version. Its

displacement is 5,204 cc, at 6,500 rpm it delivers 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, at 8,000 rpm its power tops out

at 386 kW (525 hp).

The specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement and each hp has to propel only 3.09 kilograms (6.91

lb) of weight, because the Audi R8 V10 in the version with the six-speed manual gearshift weighs only 1,620 kilograms

(3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 of these kilograms (569 lb) thats only 31 kilos (68 lb) more than the V8.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro rockets from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.9 seconds. In the version with the se-

quentially shifting R tronic it reaches 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in another 8.1 seconds. Even then its propulsive power

hardly lessens: its sufficient to reach a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). The immense force, the spontaneity and

the thrust of the acceleration, plus the sound of the engine all these impressions coalesce into a breathtaking sports car

experience. The V10 plays a concert with growling bass tones and powerful high notes, which grows into a grandiose

fortissimo as the engine revs up. This sonorous acceleration doesnt reach its limit until 8,700 rpm.

The 5.2-liter powerplant uses direct injection according to the FSI principle developed by Audi. A common rail system

injects the fuel into the combustion chambers with up to 120 bar of pressure. Direct injection reduces the susceptibility

to knocking and provides a certain amount of cooling through the evaporation of the fuel, which in turn supports a high

compression ratio of 12.5:1. This in turn contributes to superior performance and improves fuel economy. The R8 V10

with R tronic gets by on an average of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg).

58

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 61: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The wide, full shape of the R8 5.2 FSI quattro seems to hug the road. The brawny proportions and prominent wheel wells

underscore its potential. The high-precision styling of the lines and the elegant curve of the roof are typical Audi features.

A continuous contour optically connects the front, the wheel wells, the sides and the rear. Located well forward, the cab

visually expresses the mid-engine design. The vertical air scoops on the sides are also indicative of the engine location.

The design of the Audi R8 has already impressed experts, as evidenced by the double victory in the World Car of the

Year Awards 2008. In the ten-cylinder model, the styling has been sharpened up even more.

The front air inlets, which feed air to the coolers, and the lip of the front apron are painted in high-gloss black. The number

of cross-braces has been reduced from four to two. The vanes of the single-frame grille have a striking chrome finish.

A very distinctive highlight of the R8 V10 are the all-LE D headlights as standard equipment. Audi is the worlds first

automaker to use LEDs for the high beam, low beam, daytime running lights, and turn signals. Each headlight integrates

54 of these high-tech light sources. With a color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin the LED light closely resembles daylight,

which is less tiring to the eyes in night driving. Further advantages of the LEDs include brilliant illumination, low energy

consumption, and a virtually unlimited service life.

Special details also distinguish the body of the R8 V10. Its sideblades are more accentuated than in the eight-cylinder

version. The side sills are more striking and wider; the exhaust grilles at the rear windows have a matt aluminum look.

Through the large rear window, the ten-cylinder engine is clearly visible in its consummate technical beauty.

59

www.luxuryautodirect.com

Page 62: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The interior of the R8 V10 provides a unique racing ambience at the luxury level. Its dominant element is the so-called

monoposto a wide arc that contains the steering wheel and the cockpit. As always in an Audi, the workmanship is of

the highest quality. The surfaces of the dashboard and doors are lined with fine materials and adorned with precisely

stitched decorative seams. Many customizing solutions are available: Audi supplies leather in a wide range of colors,

packages with a carbon and piano-lacquer finish, or a made-to-measure luggage set. quattro GmbH, which has devel-

oped and is producing the R8 V10, also provides solutions for unconventional requirements.

The great everyday utility of the Audi R8 V10 is based in part on its spacious interior made possible by the long wheel-

base of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft). Drivers and passengers of any size will always find a perfect sitting position. Visibility

too is surprisingly good. Slender hinge pillars optimize the obliquely forward field of view. Another advantage for

convenient everyday use is the luggage space: 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) fit under the front hood, another 90 liters (3.18

cu ft) can be stowed behind the seats. There is also room for two golf bags.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro combines its colossal performance with a generous complement of standard equipment.

Highlights include heatable seat covers made of Fine Nappa leather, a driver information system, the navigation system

plus and the Bang & Olufsen sound system along with deluxe automatic air conditioning and an alarm system. The

instruments and the gearshift knob are decorated with red rings; the footrests and the rocker switches of the R tronic

have an aluminum finish.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro will be rolled out in Germany in the second quarter of 2009.

A Pagani Zonda is never shy of a drive at the racetrack, a fact that was undermined numerous times in the past with

records for production vehicles at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. With the input of its avid track focused customers, the

Pagani team has created the Zonda R using bespoke engineering solutions to meet the performance demands for a

trackday version of the highly popular Zonda F.

The central monocoque is made of a Carbon-Titanium composite, increasing rigidity while reducing significantly the

weight. Bolted directly to the chassis is the Mercedes AMG 6.0 litre race derived V12 engine, with 750 hp and 710

Nm of torque. A direct throttle actuation via mechanical cable ensures immediate throttle response.

Aspa forged AvionAl suspension components as

well as machined structural ErgAl parts holding the

engine and gearbox have been designed to reduce

the weight of the overall car, Poggipolini Titanium

screws are used on the whole car. These measures

lead to a dry weight of 1,070 kg.

At the pits, each driver will be able to find a suitable setup thanks to a fully adjustable suspension and wing configura-

tion. The effectiveness of the rear is matched by a complex new front bonnet, a masterpiece realised with the help of

models by Ennegi, as well as the closed underbody and rear diffusor. Aerodynamic setups rage from a high downforce

setting of 1.500kg to a 350kmh top speed setting.

65

Page 68: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

The interior has been designed to offer

a perfect environment for the driver. The

controls are limited to the indispensable,

but the quality finish reflects the usual de-

manding Pagani standards. The bespoke

Toora seats are FIA homologated and

comply to latest HANS standards, five-

point safety belts and a CrMo roll-cage

assure the occupants’ safety.

The lucky owners of the Zonda R will experience a level of performance on the track, that is simply not possible on

the road. A power-to-weight ratio of 701 hp-per-ton will catapult them from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2,7 seconds, the

Brembo carbon ceramic brakes ensure the car comes to a standstill even quicker.

The Zonda R is built in a limited production run and sold at a price of $1,830,167 plus taxes, a performance machine,

a track toy, a collectors item, a masterpiece signed by Horacio Pagani.

As Americans celebrated the inauguration of a new president, another American tradition graced Pennsylvania Av-

enue to lead the proceedings, the all-new Cadillac Presidential Limousine.

“Cadillac is honored…” said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. “This is a

great American tradition that we’re delighted to renew with an all-new car featuring the best of Cadillac’s dramatic

design and technology.”

President Barack Obama greeted crowds like President Woodrow Wilson, who first began this presidential tradition.

With a new design since 2004, the Cadillac Presidential Limousine includes the brand’s signature design characteristics.

Its intricate, dual-textured grille is infamous with Cadillac’s current, most popular models. The cabin includes the finest

examples of Cadillac’s recent renaissance in design, blending modernity and technology with old-world craftsmanship.

Major aspects of the cabin are cut and sewn by hand like the embroidered presidential seals and a true Cadillac is

not complete without High-tech LED spotlights, which illuminate the flags at the front of the vehicle at night. The car was

designed, developed and tested by specialists and was under strict surveillance throughout the production process.

Seeing a quarter-million dollar car in Naples,

Florida is no rare occurrence, nor is spotting sev-

eral of them lining the beautiful street of 5th Av-

enue south on an average day. On Saturday Feb-

ruary 14th however, the Ferrari Club of Naples

hosted its’ annual car show on 5th Avenue bring-

ing over 400 stunning and rare automobiles

to the downtown shopping district. The weather

was beautiful throughout the event until mid-af-

ternoon when an ominous fog rolled in just as

the show was winding down. The event benefited

Eden of Florida, a home and center for children

and adults with autism. Last year the event raised

nearly $50,000 for the organization.

72

Story by David Raffa, www.exoticsandluxury.com

Page 75: Luxury Auto Direct Magazine

Amongst the cars displayed were representations from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati,

Bentley, Aston Martin, Lotus, Rolls Royce, Porsche, and more. There were also sections

designated for the Corvette Club of Naples, the West Coast Muscle Car Club, and

the Porsche Club of Naples.

Every event has that handful of cars that seem to steal the show. This show was no

different as the Maserati MC12, Ferrari Enzo, and Koenigsegg CCX drew crowds of

spectators and photographers consistently throughout the day. I was most drawn to

the Maserati MC12 as this was the first time I had seen one of these gorgeous cars

up close in person. The rare Lamborghini LM002 with a chameleon paint job was

also an attention grabber.

73

Several car dealerships had displays this year including Ferrari of Tampa, Autoquest (located in Fort Myers, a half

hour north of Naples), Lamborghini of Miami, The Collection of Ft. Lauderdale, Maserati of Central Florida, Bentley

of Naples, and a local tuning shop Debold Performance. The local exotic dealership, Naples Motorsports, was not

present as they have been in years past as they were moving to their new, larger location in Naples. The dealerships

that were present brought in some very nice examples of what they have available for purchase. The Collection of

Ft. Lauderdale for example brought out a Porsche Carrera GT, a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Jaguar XJ220, and a Lotus

Exige.

Exotic car shows such as this are always exciting, but when they take place in your own town they become that

much more enjoyable. The Ferrari Club of Naples has yet again put on a fantastic show in the heart of our beautiful

downtown district and all of us at Exotics and Luxury are excited to attend next year.
