L ight. Water. Land. Immense skies where cloudsappear to be placed like portraits in a gallery. But

it’s the light that makes a lasting impression. It illu-minates, contrasts, and makes every inch of thiscorner of Africa shine. This is Mali. The desert runsto the north, extending right to the Libyan borderthrough the Tuareg camps. In the south, there aregreen fields of mango trees, corn, millet and gigan-tic rubber trees. The great Niger River crosses the

land of Mali, and there are villages on the banksthat seem to peek out from behind the spires of themosques built of earth, wood and mud, exactly likethe one in Djennè, the biggest building of its kind inthe world. Each grain of sand speaks of treasures.Everything in this country seems to takes us back tothe essence of creation: the true colors of the earth,the sky, the water, and multicolored clothing of thedifferent ethnic groups in Mali. Luce in essenzaMali, un paese che racconta mille storie, dai baobab, alle moschee, allamoda di Awa Meite.

L a luce. L’acqua. La terra. Cieliimmensi dove le nuvole sem-

brano disposte ad arte. Ma più diogni altra cosa la luce, capace diilluminare, contrastare, lasciarerisplendere ogni centimetro diquest’angolo di Africa chiamatoMali. Il deserto a nord, che sispinge fino alla frontiera libica tragli accampamenti dei Tuareg:

campi verdi di manghi, mais, mi-glio e immensi baobab verso sud,e il fiume. Il grande Niger che at-traversa placido il territorio ma-liano. E i villaggi lungo le sponde,che sembrano nascondersi dietroi pinnacoli delle moschee, co-struite con una mistura di terra,legno e fango: esattamente co-me la moschea di Djenné, la più

grande costruzione del genere almondo. Ogni granello di sabbiaparla dei suoi tesori. Tutto, inquesto paese, rimanda a essenzeprimarie: colori come quelli dellaterra, del cielo, dell’acqua, coloriche ornano le vesti multicoloridelle più diverse etnie del Mali.Colori primi che sono l’ispirazio-ne per artisti, musicisti e pittori di
