WHEEL OF FORTUNE NIGHT

Friday, March 18, 2016 See inside for details!

Message from the Board

Circle your calendar for Friday, April 22, 1:00 - 2:30 pm for the 2016 Annual General Meeting to be held in

the Activity Room at Mollie Nye House. There will be vacancies to fill on your Board. If you know of anyone

who could contribute a few hours monthly for an excellent cause, please contact one of the Board

Members.

As of March 11, changes will be coming to our Hearty Lunch Program. The lack of volunteer cooks for the

program has led us to search for an alternative. With this decision, plus the rising cost of food, an increase

in the ticket cost is being considered.

The LVSA Board extends a very big “thank you” to all the seniors who volunteer their time at Mollie Nye

House. The House could not operate without the kind folks who maintain the garden, man the desk,

decorate the house at Christmas and Lynn Valley Day, participate in the Lynn Valley Day parade, perform

maintenance, knit and crochet for the Craft Nook behind the desk, help with the teas throughout the year,

write get-well and sympathy cards, arrange the bus trips, provide group leadership, and take photos. The

list is never ending and your help is sincerely appreciated.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR 2016 MEMBERSHIP DUES. Please complete the entire membership

form to help us update the information we have on file. The cost is still $20.00 which comes with many

benefits. You will receive a 2016 parking sticker for your car and one for your card. New members

definitely welcome!

If you are aware of an LVSA member who is ill or hospitalized or who has lost a loved

one, please let us know. One of our volunteers is willing to write and send cards of

cheer or condolences. However cards cannot be sent out unless we hear from you.

Please email [email protected] or call 604-987-5820 and leave a message for Jackie.

HEARTY LUNCHES

Our Hearty Lunches have taken on a new flavor. Starting with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Friday, March 11, the luncheons will be delivered by a professional catering company for $10. Please note the deadline for signing up has changed to one week in advance which is Friday, March 4.

Friday, March 18, 2016 Doors open at 6:00pm, Pizza at 6:30, and Wheel starts spinning at 7pm.

We are bringing back our night of fun-- spinning the wheel, guessing the phrases, and winning

some “funny money”. Each table is a team, so bring your friends! Once you have won our

lovely fake money, you can bid on Mystery items in an auction. There will be pizza, snacks, a

cash bar and lots of laughs…all for $15.00.

Seating is limited. This event is popular, so sign up soon. Tickets are available at Mollie Nye House reception desk.

Deadline to buy tickets is March 14th.

Getting to know you…Lorraine Campbell by Janet Dysart

Lorraine Campbell was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Her

first school of only 2 rooms was in Pine Ridge, now a part of Bird’s Hill Park. At the young age of 6, her father passed away with TB, leaving her with her 26-year-old mother and her 2- year-old brother. Even after moving to Winnipeg, life was hard for them.

Graduating from St. John's High School in Winnipeg, Lorraine then worked as a secretary for 4 years. In 1961, she joined Trans

Canada Airlines as a flight attendant based in Toronto and Vancouver. It was in Vancouver that she met her future husband Grant at a Grey Cup party. They married in 1965. However, because she was now a married woman, the airline fired her! Wouldn’t happen today, would it?

Lorraine then worked at CPR’s Foreign Freight Department. In 1966, the Campbells moved to Ottawa. Lorraine worked for the government while Grant trained as an Air Traffic Controller. They returned to Vancouver in 1967. In 1973 and 1975, the lovely events of adopting two boys happened--Erik and David. David was found to be profoundly deaf in 1977 so he was enrolled with the Children's Hospital "Total Communication Program". It was through this program, the Preschool for Deaf Children, and the deaf community that Lorraine learned American Sign Language. She also learned so much more about being deaf.

Lorraine decided to study Early Childhood Education, received her certification, and worked in the Preschool. Her last work was at the North Vancouver District Library working in the Children’s Department. Following retirement in 2005, her life became even busier.

Her involvement with LVSA started with joining the Wednesday Walking Group in late 2005. She now sits on their Board, takes their minutes, writes articles for their newsletter, and sends out cards of condolences and get well. She also volunteers with the Salvation Army and Presentation House. Oh – and she does crafts at Mollie Nye House. Wow!

Monday Walking Group by Audrey Dewan

Jackie Hay and I led the first Monday walk in January 2012. Two

of our earliest participants had just retired and walking with us

has become part of their routine. We generally walk on the

North Shore leaving from Mollie Nye House or meeting at various parks. Sometimes

members of our group lead the walk. With Barb we explored the Centennial Trail in Burnaby

with views over the Burrard Inlet to the North Shore; with Carol the delightful, hidden trails

of Edgemont; with Irene we discovered the tunnel from Pemberton Heights to the other side

of the Upper Levels Highway. Each summer we bus downtown and explore Coal Harbour,

False Creek or Yaletown, have lunch and perhaps a gelato from the award winning Bella

Gelaterio. Please join us if you would like to enjoy exercise, fresh air, and good company!

Call Mollie Nye House at 604-987-5820 and leave a message for Audrey Dewan.

Wednesday Walking Group by Lorraine Campbell Del Dimock, leader of the Wednesday Walking Group, knows and loves the trails in Lynn Canyon, Lynn Headwaters, and Lynn Valley. In the winter months, walkers meet every Wednesday at

10:00 at Mollie Nye House. Starting in April when the trails are drier, we gather just beyond the End of the Line Store. Occasionally the walkers will venture into Vancouver, walk around Coal Harbour or the Seawall in Stanley Park. We have also walked around Killarney Lake on Bowen Island, the West Van Seawall and into Yaletown around False Creek. Most walks last from 1 to 2 hours. Walking is just part of this very active, chatty group. Many problems have been solved while walking, friendships have formed and empathy to each other is very evident. After each walk, the walkers meet at Mollie Nye House for coffee and for monthly lunches at a local restaurant.

Front Row (l to r): Tony Dodd, Wyllie Bardal, Shirley Luiz, Doreen Cotrell, Isabel DeJong, Lorraine Campbell, Marilyn Phillips, Del Dimock Back Row: Angela Dawson, Robin Timms, Carol Thompson, Jackie Kennedy, Wally Becker, Mary Menzies, Margaret Ballantine, Maureen Purdy, Barb Striegler, Audrey Pye

A Brief History

When Del Dimock retired from nursing at Lion’s Gate Hospital, she became involved with the Keep Well Program at Lynn Valley Kiwanis Auditorium, including blood pressure monitoring and gentle massaging. One morning in 2003 as the program was ending, Annwen Loverin, then Coordinator of LVSA at Mollie Nye House stuck her head in the door and asked, “Anyone want to come walking? If so, let’s go!” Del answered, “Hey wait a minute. Where are you walking?” Annwen replied, “Are you interested and do you walk much?” When Del responded how much she loved walking, Annwen responded, “Good, the program is yours.” And that was the birth of this long-standing Walking Group which has now been operating for 13 years.

Floradora Doe by Jack Prelutsky

Consider the calamity of Floradora Doe, who talked to all her plants, because she thought it helped them grow, she recited to her ivy, to her fennel, ferns, and phlox, she chatted with her cacti in their little window box.

She murmured to her mosses,

and she yammered to her yew, she babbled to her basil, to her borage and bamboo, she lectured to her laurels, to her lilac and her lime, she whispered to her willows, and she tittered to her thyme.

She gossiped with a poppy, and she prattled to a rose, she regaled her rhododendrons with a constant stream of prose, then suddenly, one morning, every plant keeled over, dead. "Alas!" moaned Floradora,

“Was it something that I said?"
