    Wireless network configuration

    Itisrecommendedtoonlyadjustwirelesssettingsfromacomputerconnectedtotherouterbynetworkcable,especiallywhenchangingwirelesssecuritysettings.Thiswillpreventtheconnectionfrombeinglostifyouaccidentallyapplyincorrectsettings.

    Toadjustthewirelessnetworkconfiguration,firstlogintotherouterasdescribedintheAdvancedSetupchapter,thenclickWirelessinthemenuontheleftside.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:

    SSIDThemostimportantsettinginthisscreenistheSSID,thisisthenameofyourwirelessnetwork,usedforidentificationpurposes.WhenSSIDbroadcastisenabled,youandeveryoneelseinrangeofyournetworkcanseethenameinthelistofavailablewirelessnetworks.

    ItisrecommendedthatyouchangetheSSID,thedefaultSSIDSweexLW160/161cancauseconflictsifmultipleroutersofthismodelareinrangeofeachother.WhenchangingtheSSID,youwillneedtoconnecttoyourwirelessnetworkagainasdescribedinthechapterConnectingtoawirelessnetwork.

    RegionPerregionthelawsforwirelessconfigurationscanbedifferent,choosetheregionwhereyouarelocatedfromthepulldownmenu.

    ChannelTheChannelsettingcontrolsthefrequencyonwhichtheroutertransmitsitswirelesssignal.Withthedefaultoption,AutoSelect,therouterwillscanallchannelswhenpoweredupandautomaticallyselectthechannelwiththebestsignalconditions.Changingthechannelisonlyrecommendedwhenyouexperiencepoorwirelessperformanceoftherouter.

    Securing your wireless network

    Wirelesssecurityprotectsyourwirelessnetworksothatonlyauthoriseddevicescangainaccess.Sweexrecommendsalluserstosecuretheirwirelessnetwork.Securingyournetworkshouldonlybedoneafterinternetaccessthroughtherouterhassuccessfullybeensetup.

    Therearefourmethodsforsecuringyourwirelessnetwork:

    WPA/WPA2(Enterprise/Personal)isamanualmethodofsecuringyournetwork.Youconfigureasecuritykeyandonlydeviceswiththiskeycanaccessthenetwork.Youhavetomanuallyenterthekeyineachdevicethatyouwanttograntaccess.WPAissupportedbyWindowsXPServicePack2andnewerandbymostotherdevices.Itiscurrentlytherecommendedmethodforsecuringyourwirelessnetwork.WPA2isanupgradetoWPAandrequiresatleastWindowsXPServicePack3.ToconnecttoaWPA/WPA2EnterpriseconnectionaRADIUSserverIPandpasswordisrequired.

    WPSisbuiltontopofWPAandenablesautomaticconfigurationandexchangeofWPAkeysthroughaPINcodeorthesimplepushofabutton.WPSissupportedbyWindowsVistaServicePack2andWindows7.UnderWindowsXP,WPSsupportisdependentonsoftwareorutilitiesprovidedbythemanufacturerofyourwirelessnetworkadapter.

    Someolderdevices,from2005orbeforeandinsomecasesWindows98,ME,2000andolderWindowsXPversions(beforeServicePack2)maynotsupportWPA,inthiscaseyouwillhavetofallbacktotheolderWEPmethodforwirelesssecurity.WEPisnotrecommendedfornormaloperationsinceitisnolongerconsideredfullysecurebytodaysstandards.

    Theminimumlengthforthepassphraseis8characters.Wealsorecommendyoutowritethepassphrasedownandstoreitneartherouter.Ifthepassphraseislostyoupleaserefertothetroubleshootingsectionofthismanual.

    2. Whenfinished,clicktheSavebutton.Ifyouwereconnectedwirelessly,youwillnowobservethatyourconnectionislost.FollowthestepsdescribedintheConnectingtoawirelessnetworksectionofthemanualtoregainthe(nowsecure)connection.

    Method 3: WPSForthismethodnoadditionalsettingsarerequired,simplypushtheWPSbuttonatthefrontoftherouter.Afterafewseconds,theWPSlightatthefrontoftherouterwillstarttoblink.Aslongasthelightblinks,youareabletoconnectyourWPSenableddevicetotherouter.Afterasuccessfulconnection,theWPSlightwillstopblinking.ToconnectanotherWPSenableddevice,simplypushthebuttonagainbeforeconnecting.

    Static DHCPBydefault,therouterdynamicallyassignsIPaddressestoallconnecteddevicesthroughtheDHCPprotocol.Thisisthemostuser-friendlymethodofnetworkconfigurationbutitcanalsoleadtoIPaddressesthatchangeovertimeorwhenadevicereconnects.Incertaincasesthisisundesirablebehaviour,forexamplewhenyouuseportforwardingitisnecessaryforthedevicesIPaddresstoremainconstant.OnepossiblesolutionistoconfigureastaticIPaddressinthedeviceitselfbutthiscancauseproblemswhenyoualsousethedeviceonothernetworks.AnothersolutionistoinstructtheroutertoalwaysassignthesameIPaddresstothedevice.ThisiscalledstaticDHCPorDHCPaddressreservation.

    TosetupstaticDHCPforadevice,logintotherouterasdescribedintheAdvancedsetupchapterandclickDHCPAddressReservationinthemenuontheleft.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:
