LXXXI.--A REMARKABLE NEW GENUS OF LYGAEIDAE (RHYPAROCHROMINAE) FROM THE SOLOMON ISLANDS.

By N. C. E. MILLER, F.R.E.S., F.E.S.S.A. (Commonwealth Institute of Entomology, London).

THE new genus with which this paper deals was collectod in the Solomon Islands by Mr. E. S. Brown of the Commonwealth Institute of Ento- mology, London.

Fig. 1.

Ruavatua insignis, gen. e t sp. n. A. Whole insect (dorsal view) (legs omitted). B. idem (lateral view). C. Anterior tibia.

It differs from all other known genera of the subfamily Rhyparochro- minae mainly in the structure of tho anterior tibiae and in the arrangement of the trichobothria.

In general outline the pronotum resembles that of Mizaldus Distant (1901, Ann. Mag. N.H. (7), viii, 483).

Type genus Ruavatua, gen. nov. Size small. Glabrous; punctate, except abdomen ventrally. Basal

segment of antennae moderately thick, equal in length to head. Rostrum extending to posterior cox~e. Pronotum wider than long, constricted beyond the middle; laterally carinate. Scutellum longer than wide. Hemelytra complete, extending almost to apex of abdomen ; l a t e r a l margins of cerium sinuate and curved upwards somewhat. Abdomen somewhat expanded medially ; ventrally with intersegmental carinulee ; sulcus between segments 4 and 5 not extended to sides but curved back- wards towards apical margin of segment 3 ; trichobothria on segments 5, 6 and 7 laterally. Femora moderately incrassate, unarmed ; anterior tibiae strongly swollen apically, spinose on inner surface and with one spine on inner and one spine on outer surface apically; median and posterior tibiae with setigerous tubercles ; basal segment of tarsi longer than remaining segments together.

Type species, Ruavatua insignis, sp. n. Colour.--Black. Apical segment of antennae pale yellow. Rostrum

and tarsi testaceous; claws piceous. Cerium fuscous; membrane infumate. Coxm and trochanters pieeous; femora reddish yellow, narrowly suffused with piceous basally and apically; tibiae piceous. Evaporative area of metathoracic glands greyish.

Structure.--Antennal segments with short, forwardly directed set~e and sparse longer setee. Antennal tubercles and eyes prominent, the latter with distinct facets. Segments 5 of abdomen laterally with three trichobothria in linear sequence, segments 6 and 7 with a pair of tricho- bothria near apical margin. Spines on anterior tibiae acute, short, feebly curved; setigerous tubercles on median and posterior tibim minute. Meso- and metapleura with impunctate areas. Peritreme of metathoracic gland elongate, narrow.
