The Arch of Germanicus is the major ancient gateway for Saintes. The whole composition of build-ings and functions intends to set up a visual and physical “gate” of Saintes. To redefine the Gate, circulation is redefined. The grand staircases along the axis set up a unique stage for the Arch. The forced perspective creates a vibrating rhythm of topography. Lines of topography point to the Arch of Germanicus. Also, to maintain the visual access to the Arch from the river and the two major bridges, two structures are located at the two end of the site and they frame the arch visually.
In terms of function, the project is aimed to reestablish the idea of entrance to the city as the linkage to outside as well as inside of the city. Two of the major components for the Gate are the Terminal Port and the Archaeology Museum of Stone. To link outside, the Gate is a transit hub for bus and boat traffic. To link inside, the visitor center is the first introduction to the city, and the Museum of Stone would further present the stone artifacts found in the city. There is an archaeology museum on the site, which its structure could be dated back from 17th Century. The new museum connects to the existing archaeology museum and expands the exhibition space. The connection is underground, with storage and work shop. Then, a major staircase leads to the window that frames the arch. It is intended to show that the arch is one of stone artifacts.
The bridge was the first axis of Saintes. The city continues to grow at both ends of the axis. For Saintes, the gate is the bridge, the boule-vard and the entrance. The site is the ancient gateway of Saintes.

-A community center ON TOP of its parking structure
In city like Los Angeles, the urban spaces are gradually taken over by the cars and the parking lots. Since the ground surfaces are occupied, more and more urban events have the tendency to take place ON TOP.
The position of Re-ligare institute creates drama on top of the parking structure, and the using of suspension structure further emphasis the motion of floating. The suspension sets the structure free from grounded at the original column bays. It truly shows off what steel could do in this performative structure. Since only two column bays are used, the structure is delicately touched to the ground. With large overhangs and continually folding skins, human minds wonder with the floating sky line. On the other hand, the “on top” position of the structure invites a 360 degree of uninterrupted view. the curtain wall always remind people their floating on top position in the building.
Culver City is relatively young community in terms of history. Started at 1920s, the most well know local business are MGM studios, and Hughes Aircraft company. In this creative community, its com-munity center would stand out to represent their identity and their religion in technology. The idea of screen and skin are correlated in this commnity center. The skin of the building could be understand as the information screen and ecological for the building. It creates large area of semi outdoor spaces for gardens in the air.

The “green carpet” is another element used as the horizontal line that separate the ground from the sky. Functionally, the “green carpet” contains the spa area. Structurally, the first floor ties the two bays together, reinforce the stiffness of the structure.

Cold Air is plumbed in under the major staircase. As the space below it remained in shadow, the air is kept cold and moisture by the garden.
The skin act as the solid envelope of the building. It provides shading and protect the building as from direct solid gain.
The towers are sealed inside of the skin, and they have independent AC control in order to use energy efficiently in the perfect weather of southern California.

The first impression of the site:The track left a linear descriptive story to the site, where the one point and two point perspective changes in viovus rhythm. It is about extending the content to reaches the destination points. Fragments are the memories of travel-ers, formatting its distinctive geography layers. Traveling is always one point perspective, from point A to B. It is liner, with smooth move. But like any trav-eler did, they always go back to where start in the end, irony.
Background:The Alameda Corridor is a 20-mile-long rail cargo expressway linking the ports of Long Beach and Los Ange-les to the transcontinental rail network near downtown Los Angeles. It is a series of bridges, underpasses, overpasses and street improvements that separate freight trains from street traffic and passenger trains, facilitating a more efficient transportation network. The project’s centerpiece is the Mid-Corridor Trench, which carries freight trains in an open trench that is 10 miles long, 33 feet deep and 50 feet wide between State Route 91 in Carson and 25th Street in Los Angeles. Construction began in April 1997. Operations began in April 2002.-Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority

To-day I am clearly aware that, at the start, Cubism was simply a new way of representing the world. - Juan Gris
Gris organized Glass of Beer and Playing Cards according to a dominating pattern of vertical strips. Changes or transformations in the appearance of an object seem to occur in a number of directions: they follow the alternating rhythm of vertical bands but also the contrapuntal system of horizontal bands. Occasionally there is also a sense of transformations occurring in depth, as if Gris had peeled away the surface of certain vertical bands to reveal an alternate mode of representation or point of view beneath.

Solar Urbanism
“Being located 145 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna has a Sub-Arctic climate with short, cool summers and long, cold winters, although the city itself can be considerably milder than the surrounding forest. Snowcover generally lasts from mid-October to mid-May, but snowfall can occur year-round. The sun doesn't set between May 30 and July 15, and perpetual daylight lasts from early May to early August. In this time of the year, a few hours of twilight are the only daylight available.”

LegendValue Base: Sun Compass
The existing Kiruna occupies a relative large percentage of south slope. The area of green (south facing) is as much as the area of yellow (combination of east and west facing).
It is suggesting that the new Kiruna should be relocated to the green (south facing) areas.
Why?The Sun diagram shows the winter sun comes from the south.
How?The program measures the orientation of the contour, and color code according to the input value.

Location Finding Evolutionary ScriptAgents are randomly distributed on the map’s surface (image 01). The agents then propagate in a local region for each generation. The fitness is loose for initial generations so most agents live and propagate. As time progresses and with later generations the fitness is tightened, approaching the desired values, which kills any agent in undesired values (images 2-5). In the final generation all other agents have been eliminated and only agents on desired values survive.
