FATAL COLLISION INVOLVING CAR FOR HIREOn November 1, 2014 at approximately 1:25 a.m., Dominic Stephen, a 59 year old from Sacramento, was driving a 2007 Kia Spectra w/b on I-80 west of Riverside Ave at 65 mph in the #3 lane in heavy rain when he was rear ended on his right rear side by an unknown white vehicle. This collision caused him to spin out and stall in the middle lanes of I-80 facing a southerly direction. The white vehicle fled the scene and has not been located.Shanti Adhikari, a 31 year old male from Sacramento, was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry w/b on I-80 west of Riverside Ave at 60 mph approaching the Kias position in the #4 lane. Adhikari was driving a car for hire for the Lyft company and had two passengers in the back. Shane Holland, a 24 year old from West Sacramento was sitting in the left rear passengers seat. Brady Lawrence, a 27 year old from Sacramento was sitting in the right rear passengers seat. Adhikari observed the Kia stalled in the middle lanes and took evasive action by swerving to the right, causing him to lose control of his vehicle veering to the right shoulder. The front right side of the Toyotas bumper struck a tree causing the Toyota to spin in a clockwise motion where the left rear passengers side door struck another tree causing major intrusion into the car. The Toyota came to rest on all four wheels facing a northerly direction on the right shoulder. The impact caused fatal injuries to Shane Holland. The side airbags were deployed. Both passengers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts; however, the investigation continues to confirm whether both seatbelts were worn. After the first collision Dominic exited the Kia and got behind it, trying to push it out of the roadway as it was stalled. While he was trying to push it, Donna Whitley, a 72 year old from Sacramento, was driving a 2003 Dodge Dakota w/b I-80 west of Riverside Ave in the #3 lane at 65 mph approaching his location. The front of the Dodge struck the left side of the Kia causing it to spin throwing Dominic to the ground. While the Kia was spinning it was struck on the front bumper by a tire from an unknown big rig. -more--XXX-

It is unknown what lane the big rig was traveling in and how fast he was going prior to the collision. The driver of the big rig, an unknown male, stopped and assisted both the Kia and the Dodge by pushing them to the right shoulder. After both vehicles were off of the main portion of the roadway the driver of the big rig drove away from the scene. The big rig has not been located and no positive description of it was provided to the investigating officers. After the collision Dominic was able to start his Kia again and drive himself to a local hospital before responding emergency units could arrive on scene. He was treated for head injuries. Shanti Adhikari received moderate injuries to his left shoulder and left hip. Brady Lawrence received moderate injuries to his right shoulder and body. It does not appear that drugs and/or alcohol played a factor in this collision.
