In order to meet the needs of our students as fully as possible, it is essential that the home and school make every effort to communicate openly and frequently. The guidelines on the following pages are descriptions of policies and procedures that when followed, will help us to provide an environment that is safe, friendly and academically productive. Please discuss this information with your child and contact the school if you have any questions.
PARENTS, PLEASE JOIN US IN OUR COMMITEMENT TO HELP YOUR CHILD GROW IN RESPONSIBILTY AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
LYLES MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES
1. ABSENCES1. Parents are responsible for calling the office (972-240-3720) before noon on the day of their child’s absence. Upon
return to school, students must have a note signed by a parent or a doctor. Students have three days to turn a note into the front office. After three days, if a student does not bring a note, an absence is considered unexcused. The note must include the child’s name, ID# and the reason for absence.
2. If a student has excessive unexcused absences or tardiness (partial day absences), the school is required to file with the courts which may result in a monetary fine.
3. It is the student’s responsibility to find out about missed assignments/tests upon returning to school. After a student has been absent at least three consecutive days, a parent or guardian may call the school office and request the make-up work. After the request has been made, there will be a 24-hour turn-around before parents can pick up work to allow teachers time to gather the materials. No work will be gathered unless the student has been absent three or more days.
2. AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITES/FUNCTIONS/ATHLETIC EVENTSStudents are expected to be picked up within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the activity. Students should make arrangements for pick-up before attending a function. Students left after this time period will not be allowed to attend the next after-school game or activity. After the second offense, students will no longer be allowed to attend after-school functions.
3. BREAKFAST PROCEDURES Lyles Middle School will implement the Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) system for this school year. Students will be served breakfast from 8 a.m. to 8:40 a.m.
4. DETENTIONS Students will receive a detention if he/she does not follow procedures outlined in the Lyles Discipline Plan. Detentions will be served before or after school depending on the teacher’s preference. Administrative detentions are assigned by administrators in extreme incidents or when students consistently violate school rules. Administrative detentions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m.
5. DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS Students violating the standardized dress code may not be allowed to stay in the regular classroom depending on the violation. Violating dress code will earn students dress code violations, detentions, IBS or suspension. Students not wearing standardized dress will be given appropriate clothes when available and receive consequences. Persistent dress code violators will not be allowed to participate in “Spirit Day.”
6. EARLY ARRIVAL PROCEDURES Morning supervision for students begins at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria. It is NOT recommended that parents drop students off before this time as there is no outside supervision. All students will enter the building through the cafeteria side prior to 8:45 a.m. and report directly to their homeroom. Any student that arrives to school after 8:45 a.m. must enter the building through the front doors.

7. ELIGIBILITY FOR ATTENDANCE TO ASSEMBLIES AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES In order for students to attend extracurricular activities, after school events such as games, dances and/or paid activities, students must not owe any fines for missing text books, library books, cafeteria accounts, fundraisers. Students who are suspended from school, assigned IBS, or absent from school on the day of the event are also ineligible to attend.
8. HALLWAY PROCEDURES 1. Students please walk on the RIGHT side of the hallway. 2. Move in an orderly manner following the path; please do not stop in the hall. Walk and talk quietly. 3. No running or disruptive behavior is allowed in the hall. An administrative detention will be given for minor
disruptive behavior in the hallway to insure the safety of our students. 4. Students will not be assigned lockers. All students are required to carry their binders. Students can carry backpacks.
All backpacks are subject to search and cannot cause a distraction to the learning environment. Backpacks must be appropriately sized.
9. IN-BUILDING SUSPENSION Students who have displayed inappropriate behavior will be assigned to In-Building Suspension. Students may also be placed in IBS during a pending investigation of code of conduct violations. Students assigned to a full day in IBS will complete all assignments in the IBS room with no grading penalty. They will eat lunch in IBS so they may bring a sack lunch (sandwich, fruit, milk/juice – no candy, cookies, chips or soda allowed) or purchase lunch from the cafeteria. Students who are placed in IBS are not allowed to attend extracurricular activities on the days that they are placed in IBS.
10. LOST AND FOUND Lyles Middle School will keep items that students misplace for one week. Inappropriate clothing may be retrieved by students after school on the day it is taken. If items remain in the lost and found for more than a week, they will be taken to the Salvation Army.
11. LUNCH PROCEDURES 1. Students will walk in a single file line as they leave the classroom to go to the cafeteria and enter the cafeteria in an
orderly manner. All students will enter the cafeteria through the door by the Choir/Art Hall. Teachers will escort their classes into the cafeteria. Students are not allowed to bring books, folders, notebooks, pens/pencils, or other extraneous items to the cafeteria during lunch period.
2. Because there are only 30 minutes for lunch, students will follow the direction of adults upon entering the cafeteria. 3. Students who are not buying food cannot go through a lunch line because this slows down lunch time. 4. Students may throw away trash when dismissed by table. Students are not to get up out of their seats without
permission. Students will exit through the doors by the Band Hall. Students should remain seated until their teacher’s name is called.
5. Students should ask permission to use the restroom and only use the one closest to the cafeteria. 6. No food, drinks or candy may be taken from the cafeteria. No food is allowed in the classrooms! IF RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED, STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE AN ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION AFTER RECEIVING A WARNING.
12. PHONE USAGE Students should make arrangements to stay for after school activities, tutorials and detentions before arriving at school.In case of an emergency or if the school cancels an activity, a teacher’s aide will call the parent during the school day. At 4:15 p.m., students will have access to a phone in the front office for EMERGENCIES only. There is no supervision after 4:15 p.m. and students not attending tutorials should be picked up by this time. Cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited during school hours.

13. PROGRESS REPORTS AND REPORT CARDS Each student will receive a progress report for each class after completing three weeks of work within each of the six weeks. Progress reports must be signed by a parent or a legal guardian and returned to the student’s 2nd period teacher to be kept on file. Report cards will be mailed home during the 1st and 6th grading cycles only.
14. PROHIBITED ITEMS Items that are prohibited on campus will be confiscated. Please refer to the Dress Code section in this handbook for a partial list of prohibited items. Cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited throughout the school day unless usage is authorized for instructional purposes. If a cell phone is confiscated during the school day, a parent must retrieve the device without charge on the first infraction. If confiscated a second time, an administrative fee not to exceed $15 will be charged and a parent must retrieve the device.
15. SERIOUS DISRUPTION ON SCHOOL PROPERTY The safety of our students is a major priority. As a result, students who engage in physical altercations on school property and/or cause a major disruption in the halls or in the classroom will be suspended and possibly ticketed by the School Resource Officer.
16. SUSPENSIONS Suspensions from school are for serious infractions such as fighting or being disrespectful to an adult. A suspension may extend for 1-3 days. Students may get missing assignments after returning from a suspension. Students are not allowed on campus or able to attend extracurricular activities while suspended. This includes activities at any GISD campus.
17. TARDY POLICY It is critical that students arrive on time to class in order to minimize disruptions in the learning process. Once students enter the room, they must be seated. Students need to take care of personal needs before entering the classroom. A student who arrives after 8:50 a.m. will receive a TARDY. A student who arrives after 9 a.m. must check into the attendance office before going to class and will receive a PARTIAL DAY ABSENCE. Detentions for Excessive Tardies are held on Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m.
18. TUTORIALS Tutorials are opportunities for students to get additional help from teachers and to make up low tests and quizzes. Tutorials are held before and after school. Students who have morning tutorials must be in the cafeteria by 8 a.m. Students will stay with the teacher until the dismissal bell. Students who have afternoon tutorials must make arrangements to stay late prior to coming to school that day. Any student attending afternoon tutorials should not exit the building at 3:50 p.m. Students may not be allowed back into the building if they have exited.
19. THE LUMBERJACK ROOM Students will be sent to the Woodshed when given an office referral for disruptive behavior or a violation of the dress code. Students will wait in the Woodshed until an administrator is available to see them. Students are expected to sit quietly, write a statement about the incident and work on given assignments.

LYLES MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE
Standardized dress is made up of clothing that meets a particular description but is not a specific brand of clothing. Any brand is acceptable as long as no logos or brand names are visible.
PROPER ATTIRE/DRESS SHIRTS – solid red, gray, navy, or white polo-style knit shirts with collars and buttons (three or less). Shirts
may be long or short sleeves with a ribbed cuff. If T-shirts are worn under polo shirts, they must be solid red, white, or navy. All shirts must be of appropriate size and fit. All shirts must be tucked in.
PANTS/SLACKS/TROUSERS – navy, or khaki traditional style (no cargo pants). Pants must be worn at the waist level at all times (no sagging). Pants may not have any pockets on the side of the legs. All pants, slacks and trousers must be of appropriate size and fit. Pants may not be rolled or cuffed at the ankle.
SKIRTS/SHORTS/CAPRI PANTS – navy, or khaki, knee-length or longer, finished hemline, same style as pants. No skorts are allowed.
SWEATSHIRTS OR SWEATERS – solid red, gray, navy or white, pullover style, long sleeves. Sweaters may also be cardigan-style (button up). All sweatshirts and sweaters must be of appropriate size and fit. Standardized dress shirts must be worn under sweatshirts and sweaters. No pouch or hoods may be worn on sweatshirts.
NO TORN CLOTHING ALLOWED. This includes jeans worn on spirit dress days. LIGHTWEIGHT JACKETS-A solid red, white or navy lightweight jacket may be worn with standardized
clothing during the school day. Navy jackets may be purchased from Lyles. SHOES AND SOCKS – Footwear includes socks with tennis shoes, loafers, dress shoes or other closed toe
and heel shoes. Shoes must enclose the entire foot; tennis shoes will be necessary for PE class. No sandals, house shoes/slippers, flip-flops or boots of any kind will be worn at school.
BELTS - Belts are required for pants, shorts, or skirts that have belt loops. Belts must be solid black, solid brown, or solid white. Belts must be worn around their waist at all times. No large belt buckles will be allowed. No writing on the belt.
HEAVY COATS. These may be worn to school but must be kept in their backpack during the instructional day.
GROOMING CODE
Excessively spiked hair, hair with extreme differences in length, and Mohawks are not permissible. Multi and radically colored hair will not be permitted. Hair color must be natural. (no burgundy hair) Haircuts must be symmetrical with no extreme variations in length. No double edge ups allowed. Students will not have facial hair or sideburns. Symbols, numbers, letters and designs may not be shaved into the hair. No face or body stickers or face or hair glitter or writing/designs on the body.
THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT ALLOWED:
No sunglasses, gloves, or hand coverings, bandanas, or sweat bands. No earrings on boys (including temporary posts). No body piercing except for girls’ ears No large earrings or hoops with objects attached to the ear. No gold or silver grill on teeth. Any electronic device that is not registered with the school is not allowed. No studded/spiked bracelets/belts/chains as belts or wallet chains or chains intended for dog collars or large
necklace or objects hanging around the neck No markers of any kind No more than 2 bracelets/bands one a person (must be appropriate and not cause a distraction).
The dress and grooming codes outlined above are not optional. Any item that has no relevance to instruction or the curriculum or any clothing /hairstyle that detracts from the learning environment will not be allowed. Students will be given disciplinary consequences if they do not follow the dress and grooming codes. Final decision will be determined by the principal or his/her designee.

LYLES DISCIPLINE PLAN
In the classroom, the student must comply with these expectations: 1. Be in your assigned seat ready to work by the time the bell rings. 2. Bring paper, pens, pencils, books, and any other needed supplies every day. 3. Keep hands, feet, books, and objects to yourself. 4. Refrain from swearing, making rude gestures, put downs, or disruptive behavior. 5. Follow all directions as given, the first time. If a student does not meet an expectation, the following learning choices will occur within a six-week period: First Time: Written Warning Second Time: Student-Teacher Conference Third Time: 30-minute Detention and Phone Conference with parent Fourth Time: Office Referral (Include dates in which parents have
been contacted and student has served detentions.) IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT PARENTS ARE CONTACTED PERSONALLY BY THE TEACHER AT THE APPROPRIATE TIMES. TEACHERS WILL UTILIZE THE TELEPHONE LOG BOOK TO DOCUMENT PARENT CONTACTS. Every grading cycle, each student starts over with the discipline plan. However, after a 30-minute detention has been given in one grading cycle, the student will be referred to the office for any subsequent misbehavior meriting consequences beyond a warning. Teachers are required to send complete documentation using Review 360 when sending a student to the office.

Free Dress…What NOT to wear! On certain days, there will be opportunities for students to dress in “relaxed” attire other than normal standardized dress wear. On these days, students must still dress according to the Student Handbook and School Code of Conduct. Below is a list of clothing that is not appropriate to wear on these days. Students who violate this dress code will be subject to disciplinary actions as outlined in the Lyles Middle School Levels of Infractions. The administration has the final say on all dress code matters.
