First, a quote from Emeritus Professor Richard Hudson, from the introduction to Language for Life:

“Grammar is probably the most important mental ability we have, and the one that distinguishes us most sharply from other

animals. But, like any other ability, it doesn't come to us fully developed by Mother Nature.

What grows naturally is just a small part of what adults need to function properly in the

modern world."

Write your conclusions after this presentation:

Is teaching grammar to kids important anyway?

Where are you supposed to start?

How far do you go?

THREE CONDITIONS FOR INTRODUCING PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES

• When students can reliably form, transcribe and read the letters <e, r, n, u> (amongst others),

• When students can reliably count up to three syllables orally, and • When students have studied the word do and its family, you can introduce the

concept of affixes. For scope and sequence documents, please refer to the Language Arts and Language for Life training programs.
