    County Profile - Lyon County, KS

    Lyon County is one of the 105 counties in the state of Kansas. The 2007 populationsestimate lists the population to be 35,981. According to 2000 estimates, it has 850.87square miles in land area and a population density of 42.2 people per square mile. Theaverage household size is 2.51 persons (2000) and median household income is$34,377 (2004) (US census Bureau).

    Population Estimates

    Lyon County has a population of 35,981 as of July 1, 2007 (US Census Bureau). Thepopulation increased by 0.13% from the year 2000 to 2007. As per the 2000 censussurvey, population of the county was 35,935 with median age of 30.9 years. In 2000,

    Lyon County had twenty-one percent of its population under the age of 15 years, 33.7%in the age group 15 to 34 years, 30.4% in the age group 35 years to 59 years and14.8% of the population above 60 years of age.

    Poverty Rates

    The current poverty rate for Lyon County is more than that of the state. In 2000, LyonCountys poverty rate was 11.4% which increased to 20.2% in 2007. The poverty ratefor Kansas in the same period went from 8.9% to 11.2%.

    Labor Force

    Lyon Countys current unemployment rate is 4% which is slightly less than the state rateof 4.1%. The total labor force for the county declined by 1.0% in the last five years andby 1.6% in the last ten years, but along with that the unemployed labor force alsodeclined by 9.1% in the last five years.

    Industry Analysis

    Industry Totals for Lyon County

    Industry employment increased by approximately 17% from 1990 to 2007 in Lyon County. Average pay (after adjusting forinflation) has declined by 1.71%, and the number of establishments in the same period increased by around 11%. Thecounty had maximum number of establishments in the year 1999 and the growth was steady from 1990 up till 1999. Afterthat the number of establishments started declining, but the county again saw an increase in industry as number ofestablishments went up from 900 in 2006 to 940 establishments in 2007.

    Retail Trade is the largest sector in Lyon County in terms of number of establishments with 141 establishments, and thissector accounts for 1,870 jobs in the county. The highest paid sector is the Transportation and Warehousing sector withannual average wages of $42,927.
