The bulls in the offering are the result of decades of planned breeding for the balanced traits like fertility, performance, carcass and calving ease. There are some strong new bloodlines as well as some of the great sire groups you have liked here before. Each animal in the sale is designed to become a valuable addition to your herd and do his job to help improve the beef industry. We have had an unprecedented cattle market in the past year. We are fortunate to see the demand that Lyons Ranch-sired calves generate because of their performance in the yards and on the rail. However you choose to market your cattle, know that we feel that you should get good value for your Lyons Ranch purchases, and we will do our best to help you be successful. For the last four sales, we have DNA tested every bull that sold to increase the accuracies of all bulls’ EPDs. This year we utilized the Zoetis HD50K test on every lot, including parentage, through Angus Genetics Inc. Adding a genetic profile can give a young bull’s EPD accuracies as high as if he had already sired from eight to 20 calves. We have done this so you can make solid breeding decisions for your operation’s success and allow all of us to make better genetic progress. Therefore, the EPDs in this book are all Genomic Enhanced Progeney Differences, or GE-EPDs. All updates, videos and an online catalog can be found on our website LyonsRanch.com and at LivestockDirect.net. All cattle have been tested BVD-PI free and will be current on vaccinations. They will have passed a breeding soundness exam with their semen checked under the microscope, so no deferred bulls sell. If a bull is a carrier of the DD condition, it will be noted beside his registration number. If you cannot attend the sale, you can watch and bid online at DVAuction.com. SEMEN CHECKS & HERD HEALTHAll bulls have been semen evaluated by Dr. Tom Taul, DVM, from Kansas Artificial Breeding Service Unit (KABSU). Any unsatisfactory or deferred bulls will not sell in the sale. Bulls have been given Bovishield Gold VL5 prior to the sale. All bulls are virgin bulls. We recommend all bulls receive a breeding soundness exam and booster of Vibrio-Lepto prior to every

breeding season.

Calving Ease Direct EPD – CED – is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating great-er calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

$Value index EPDs are multi-trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head, to assist producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future prog-eny of each sires are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. There are many $Value Indices. We have included two. $Wean and $Beef.

Wean Value - $W – expressed in dollars per head, is the expect-ed average difference in future progeny performance for pre-wean-ing merit. $W includes revenue and cost adjustments, birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size.

Beef Value - $B – expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

PERFORMANCE DATABeside each animal’s pedigree is a box that includes the individual’s performance data and their Production EPDs.

BW: Birth Weight (actual and EPD). All birth weights in this catalog are actual, not adjusted.WW: Weaning Weight (adjusted 205 day weight and EPD).

NR: Nursing Ratio of the individual’s dam (number of calves she has raised and the average weaning weight ratio of them). The number in the right box is the individual’s Milk EPD.

YW: Yearling Weight (adjusted 365 day weight and EPD). YW2: Yearling Weight 2 (adjusted weight at 18 months of age).

Since all bulls selling are fall yearlings, if available, we have provided their adjusted YW2 from the American Angus Association.This is a better representation of the bull’s size at sale time. Scrotal data is not adjusted for YW2.

SC: Scrotal Circumference (adjusted scrotal circumference at a year of age in centimeters).

Integrity of Data Provides the BaseToday’s technological environment demands that we provide up-to-date information covering many selection criteria. On this page is a description of some of the features we include in our catalog. Not every piece of data is important to every person. Pay attention to the information you need and evaluate the animals yourself on sale day to help insure your own success.

With so much push toward producing curve-bending animals with ex-treme numbers, it can be tempting to focus on single trait selection when you are buying cattle. As we have for generations, we encourage you to select what works for your program without going for extremes. We need cattle that with high fertility, good feet and legs, are easy fleshing and have strong udders – don’t forget this when you make your selections.

In every case, the integrity of the data is only as good as the person who reports it. We have made every attempt to collect and report data in an honest fashion. If you have any questions about any of the numbers provided, don’t hesitate to ask.

All Sale Bulls were DNA TestedIn addition to the regular weights and measurements we have recorded and reported for generations under AHIR to the American Angus Associ-ation, to increase the accuracies of all bulls’ EPDs, for the last four years, Lyons Ranch has DNA tested every bull in our sales. This year, we used the Zoetis HD50K test, including parentage, through Angus Genetics Inc.

The American Angus Association reports that the adding a genetic profile can give a young bull’s EPDs accuracies as high as if he had already sired from eight to 20 calves.
