PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Andrew Stevenson

LEPS Newborns Congratulations to Ms Karlene Withers on the birth of son, Brax-ton Healy, and also Mrs Colinda Della Valle on bringing daughter Chiara Joy into the world over the summer holiday period. Both mums and bubs are doing well.

New classes for 2014! LEPS students should start in their permanent classes next week. Due to the unexpected influx of ‘in area’ enrolments in the final week of 2013 and again this week, we will take the time to ensure permanent class placements are best for all students. The process of grouping students into classes began last November and, as you can imagine, with over 750 children it is always a challenging logistical exercise. At LEPS, teachers work collaboratively to ensure that each individual student’s needs are considered before being assigned to a class and teacher – these factors include; ESL (English as a Second Language), STLA (Support Teacher Learning Assistance), Integration Funding (Students with Confirmed Disability), Gifted and Talented, parent advice, School Counsellor reports, balancing the academic groupings, male/female gender balance, behavioural & social concerns etc. The effort of all staff in considering this myriad of fac-tors ensures LEPS continues to annually produce the best possible class dynamic that will ensure a quality learning environment for our students. The students have been working in temporary classes over the past three days and this has again allowed us time to adjust groupings as a result of numerous first week enrolments and departures. The model used for temporary classes this year will result in the majority of students remaining with the same teacher and cohort for the year.

Who do I speak to? (Chain of Communication) This model of communication for parents has been highly successful in recent years and will again be adopted in 2014. If you have any concerns regarding your child, please don’t hesitate to use this process and raise any issues as they arise. 1. The classroom teacher should, where appropriate, always be spoken to first. Contact the school of-

fice, leave your name and number and the teacher will return your call asap to discuss the issue over the phone or make a suitable time to meet.

2. K – 2 issues that aren’t appropriate for the classroom teacher should be directed via the school office

to the K – 2 Deputy Principal, Miss Diane Read. OR 3 - 6 issues that aren’t appropriate for the classroom teacher should be directed via the school office

to the 3 – 6 Deputy Principal, Ms Rachel Watkins. 3. Both Deputy Principals will then address the issue personally or direct the concern back to an Assis-

tant Principal or Principal where necessary.

New Playground Artwork Regular LEPS muralist, Robin Martin, has upgrad-ed our K-2 playground over the holidays with some bright and fun games and markings.

Traditionally the Welcome Back Night is organised by the Kindergarten parents of the previous year. Therefore we need volunteers from all Year 1 Classes to ease the workload. It is not an oner-ous task. The Welcome Back night is a way for parents to catch up with other parents, children to play with their friends after the holidays and a way to celebrate the start of the school year and have some fun. By volunteering, you are helping the school community, fundraising for the school (the Night makes a profit) and meeting a variety of parents you may not have had an interaction with. Olivia Moore is coordinating the volunteer roster. If you are able to help, please call Olivia on 0401 919 959 or email [email protected]. A note will be emailed to all Year 1 parents also with further details and an option to circle your preferred timeslot.
