TRANSCRIPT
(Jesus) left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,” ~ Matthew 4:13
The ancient village of Capernaum held a unique appeal for me on our tour. The city name means “City of Nahum” in Hebrew, a connection that escaped me before this trip. I know the biblical stories of Capernaum well, and they are some of my favorites.
My imagination as a child ran wild, imagining Jesus talking to the centurion as he pleaded for the healing of his servant. I wondered how Peter felt when Jesus healed his mother-in-law. Reading that story first helped me to realize that Peter was married. These are details that I never considered until I was a teenager.
However, one story from Capernaum captured my imagination more than any other. Jesus was healing people, and the crowd grew so thick that people couldn’t get through the door. So, one paralyzed man had some creative friends who decided to tear out a section of the roof and lower him through it to get to Jesus. That’s one way of cutting in line! I’m sure Peter was not thrilled if this was his home, but I had to admire the stretcher-bearers for advocating for their friend.
The physical attributes of Capernaum were special. The rock here wasn’t like the other places we visited. The rock in Capernaum was Basalt, which is jet black. The stones were black, and the buildings made of basalt were black with sandy colored mortar. The contrast was jarring. The dark surfac-es amplified the heat of the day. This space was different, and everything about it showed its uniqueness.
The house of Peter’s mother-in-law was central to the excavation, and a large octagonal church has been built over the site, and over the room where the roof might have been removed. It showed the way families lived together, adding a new room for a new family member each time a child grew up and married.
The original synagogue had been rebuilt, but the place where Jesus taught and preached was set aside. Jesus preached the “bread of life” discourse from John 6 in Capernaum. Matthew, the tax collector, lived here.
We took some time here to pause and wander, to pray, and to be present in this space where Jesus lived during his years of ministry. Although few things in this place were excavated to Jesus’ time, and we could not walk on the stones where Jesus walked, we were here where Jesus made his home. Capernaum was home, and for Jesus, this was a place of rest and renewal.
To God be the Glory!

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Evening Prayer for Lent
Our Wednesday evening worship series for Lent 2020 is entitled “Perfect Love Casts out Fear.” The texts for these five weeks include a pair of scripture readings each week exploring dimensions of God’s love for us and the love of Christ we share. The worship services at St. Timothy will follow a simplified order of evening prayer using familiar hymns, while the services at Salem will use the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy. Instead of a prepared message each week, we will pause to pray through each text that we are considering for the week. Please join us for this time of quiet reflection during Lent.
Readings:
March 4 – Leviticus 19:1-3, 9-18 Love your neighbor as yourself Romans 13:8-10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor
March 11 – Hosea 11:1-12 When Israel was a child I loved him Romans 8:35-39 Who will separate us from the love of Christ?
March 18 – Deuteronomy 10:12-22 Love immigrants because you were immigrants in Egypt Luke 6:27-38 Love your enemies
March 25 – 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 If I have faith but do not have love, I am nothing John 14:15-31 If you love me you will keep my commandments
April 1 – Deuteronomy 7:7-13 It was not because you were greater that the Lord loved you 1 John 4:7-21 Perfect love casts out fear
