move is the The T. Nagar Resi-dents’ Welfare Association, whose office-bearers haveeven started placing boardsoutside apartments andhouses egging voters to exer-ciser the NOTA option.

B. Kannan (President) toldMambalam Times that hav-ing borne the brunt of emptypromises from political par-ties year after year the resi-dents have no confidence inany party contesting the elec-tions in Tamilnadu on May 16.

He said they are talking withmembers of other ResidentAssociations in the area toconvince their members to

exercise the NOTA option onMay 16.

He said that T. Nagar andWest Mambalam suffer fromrampant encroachment andtraffic issues and even afteryears of complaining and plead-ing with the authorities in dif-ferent regimes there has beenno end to the problem.

V.S. Jayaraman (Secretary)said that illegal water tappingand building violations by thecommercial complex ownersare rampant. Even in commer-cial buildings that are knownto have violated norms, reno-vation and rectifications con-tinue. “NOTA is the best wayto exercise your constitutionalrights,” said Jayaraman.

The residents’ welfare asso-ciations of T. Nagar, WestMambalam, CIT Nagar,Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani andKodambakkam along withExnora members have decidedto submit a list of demands tocandidates contesting in theirassembly constituency, fol-lowing a meeting they held onApril 15.

The demands include multi-level parking facilities and footover-bridges or subways in at

least four places and removalof hawkers and eateries in T.Nagar. They have also soughta connection between the twoflyovers on Usman Road.

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 4One of such crowd-pulling dancers during the silent film

shows was the noted silent film star J. Susheela Devi. Attrac-tive and shapely, she played lead roles in many silent films. Hermost popular film was R. Prakash’s “Leila - The Star ofMingrelia “ (1931). She had no inhibitions on screen andinvested her love sequences with ebullient energy, abandon andlong lingering passionate kisses. She was fairly active evenafter movies began to talk Tamil and played the lead role in“Dewan Bahadur” (1943). Sadly, her later years were spent inoblivion and she died some years ago in want and misery, forgotten by the world she had entertained and titillated duringher youthful energy-rich years.

Besides dances on the stage, there were also other featureslike wrestling bouts and boxing interludes during the screeningof silent movies. Obviously all these were the result of theimpact of the American vaudeville. Indeed the Gaiety Cinemain Madras had handbills printed in Tamil and circulated adver-tising “Vaudeville Shows - An Additional Attraction” both inEnglish and Tamil!. In the Tamil handbill, the world was writtenas ‘Vaadi Villi! (A case of ‘Semmozhi Aangilam’?’)

One of the early musical movies made in 1933 was “ValliThirumanam” bankrolled by the Coimbatore-based early moviepioneer Samikannu Vincent and produced by him in Calcuttain association with Pioneer Films Limited of that city.

Lord Muruga, son of Lord Shiva, promises one of his devoteesthat he would marry her in her next birth. She is born on earthand a tribal chief finds the abandoned infant whom he namesValli and brings up as his daughter. True to his promise, Murugacomes down to earth to woo her and, after many interestingevents, he weds her. This tale was filmed more than once as asilent film, and the first sound version was produced in 1933.Later, there were two more versions, one in 1945, “Sri Valli” ,by AV. Meiyappan which was a major box office hit. In recentdecades, another was made in colour with Sivaji Ganesanplaying Muruga with Padmini as Valli. In spite of these topstars, colour and more, this film proved a major flop!

The 1930s was the period when the Indian Freedom Move-ment was in a fast forward mode and the British Indian filmcensorship code was very rigid. Anything - songs, dialogues orvisuals -.that even distantly or obliquely depicted an anti-British stance or pro-Indian Freedom Movement, cleverlyintroduced by smart filmmakers, were ruthlessly deleted bythe censors.

(Censorship was very rigid in that period, especially aboutthe Freedom Movement. In a mythological movie about Vidhura, the youngest brother of King Dritharashtra and Pandu, his rolewas played by a Bombay-based actor. He was emaciatedlythin and totally bald, and was dressed like Mahatma Gandhi. The film was titled “Mahatma Vidhur” and hence the censorsbranded it as anti-British and pro- Freedom Movement andpromptly banned it!) “Valli Thirumanam” too had songs propa-gating the Freedom Movement. Valli (T. P. Rajalakshmi) is inher father’s fields to protect the crops from invading birds. Onsuch duty, she sings the song “Vetkamketta vellai kokkugalaa, viratti adiththaalum vaareegalaa”. (‘Shameless white storks, why do you come back even after being chased out!’) The obliquereference was to the white man, using the white storks as ametaphor. In many cinema houses, many moviegoers loudlycheered when these lines came on screen.

Another song was sung by Muruga who comes to meet Vallidisguised as a bangle seller, and it had the opening lines“Valaiyal vaangalaiyo… ammammaa... valaiyal vaangalaiyo…oru maasillaadha Hindu Swadheshi valaiyal vaangalaiyo”(Bangles, buy…madam, bangles….pure Indian Swadheshibangles…!’), in which he makes reference to the then patrioticmovement ‘Swadheshi Goods’ asking people to boycott foreigngoods and buy only Indian goods!

Lord Muruga singing lines about the Indian Freedom Move-ment? Anachronism? Maybe according to the rules of drama-turgy, but nobody then bothered about such things. Only thespirit of the Fight for Freedom mattered!

Damaged EB junction boxes pose a dangerSir, The EB junction boxes in

18th Street, 4th Sector, K.K.Nagar are in a damaged condi-tion with exposed cables.

Most do not have doors andthe connectors are corroded.

It is a danger to unwarypassers-by, especially childrenwho often play on the streetsclose to these open junctionboxes.

Further, there is a live EBcable with exposed insulationlying on the pavement at thejunction of 18th and 20th Street.

I request the TNEB authorities to take necessary action andreplace the damaged junction boxes and the EB cable at theearliest to prevent any untoward incident. V. Jayarajan, 18thStreet, 4th Sector, K.K. Nagar

Appeal for mini bus service in 7th AvenueSir, MTC runs a mini bus service from Ashok Pillar to

Mahalingapuram via 4th Avenue and north end of 7th Avenueto reach Balakrishna Naikcen Street, Station Road (WestMambalam).

4th Avenue is already covered by the bus routes 17D, 37D andshare autos.

So the mini bus service is not much patronized by residentsof 4th Avenue.

Instead, the mini bus can go via 11th Avenue and the fullstretch of 7th Avenue which is not covered by any other busroutes or share autos to reach Balakrishna Naicken Street.

7th Avenue has prominent public places like schools, temples, hospitals and banks and a mini bus service on this route willbenefit the commuters.

So, I appeal to the authorities to either start a mini busservice covering 7th Avenue or reroute the existing the mini busservice via 11th Avenue and 7th Avenue to help the commuters.Kumar, 7th Avenue, Ashok Nagar.

Sir, Therear gate ofthe Corpo-r a t i o nC o m p l e xfor pave-ment ven-dors inPondy Ba-zaar, T.Nagar wasdismantledby Corpo-

ration workers last week for no reason. The gate was mainly used by vendors to bring in supplies. At night the gate was kept closed for security reasons. With the gate removed, there is now a lapse in security in the

complex as it gives free access to anyone with ulterior motiveto freely enter the complex at night.

I appeal to the Corporation to immediately install the reargate. S. Kandasamy, a flower vendor at the CommercialComplex.
