Recession has mild impact Myles hits diamond in December certificationson Cinram's third quarterCinram, Canada's largest CD, cassette and vinylmanufacturer, recently released third quarterresults for the company. Although year-to-datefigures showed an increase of close to $2 mil-lion, third quarter revenue results were downslightly more than the company had anticipated.

Lewis Ritchie, Chief Financial Officer forthe company, says that the decrease is a result ofminimal new release activity and the poor eco-nomic climate. Ritchie explains that these ele-ments had been taken into consideration, lead-ing the company to expect a downturn in sales.

"Cinram is a very strong company finan-cially," comments Ritchie, who explains that thenumbers have not caused great alarm. "I thinkoverall the year has been an excellent one con-sidering the situation," adding that fourth quar-ter results will probably be similar to those of thethird.

This summer, Cinram acquired the assetsof PRC Tape Company Inc. of Indiana, throughan all cash transaction. The investment did nothave a significant impact on the company'scashflow, and it enabled Cinram to obtain amuch desired and lucrative American foothold.

Being very active in the business world andone who maintained a disciplined health regi-men, the only major concern expressed by Mrs.Reynolds was how soon she can return to herdaily work and fitness habit. However, it's ex-pected that because of the serious and verypainful injuries she sustained, recovery will takesome time.

Get -well cards can be sent to Mrs. Rey-nolds at Room B510, Sunnybrook Hospital,2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4N 3M5.

with Elvira CapreeseAs we go to press ... the street is buzzing withthe rumour that one of the pioneers of the indus-try is moving on. This is shocking news. Wehave come to love and respect this man, who isa giant among us and we will miss him dearly. Itis also a sad day in that (if the rumours are true)it will leave only two Canadians heading up themajors in this country. So much for understand-ing our culture! This is truly a sad day for ourindustry.

Failing with Blachford . . . You can addChristie Blachford of the Financial Post to ourlist of reporters practicising journalistic free-dom. First we had the Globe's Brian Fawcettsneaking in the expression "dickhead". Then wehad another Globe writer, Jay Scott, who snuck"pissed -off' neatly into his well-read column.Well, not to be outdone, Blachford tops them allwith her Jan. 4th Jock Talk column. Just as I wasgetting bored with her purge of fitness buffs, she

pops the word "fart", which read rather well.Further down she elaborates with "fitness -fart".Now, we all fart, some better and louder thanothers . . . and you don't necessarily have toweigh half a ton to come up with a blockbuster. So now that we're used to this new, now publicword "fart", perhaps I can tell you of an experi-ence I had. I was at an industry farting contestlast year where I witnessed a petite young thing, weighing less than a hundred pounds, who blewthe tablecloth off the table. Then his wife demol-ished the table and won the contest. (EC: I dreadto think of what we'll read in the dailiesnext . . . !)

Goings on at the Star . . . ! Before MitchPotter had the opportunity to join our list ofjour-nalists taking word liberties (dickhead, pissed -off, fitness -farts), he's leaving the Toronto Star.Rumour has it he is going back to school. AlsoI've heard the Star will shortly launch a news, entertainment, alternative music weekly. I hearthat all, or most of the material, supplied will befrom freelancers. (EC: Speaking of school . . . 1)

Kirk LaPointe gets out of the trade ... ! Alongtime observer/writer of what's happening inthe music trade, Kirk LaPointe is apparentlygiving up his trade reporting to take over asBureau Chief for Canadian Press. (EC: Being atrade writer first opens all kinds of doors . . . !)

Thin-skinned broadcasters...! I hear that aradio programmer, who will remain nameless tosave him embarrassment, got his pig -tail in aknot because a trade ad neglected to name hisstation as being on a particular record. I'vechecked out the station with a couple of recordpeople and they tell me that this guy is con-stantly late going on a record. He has to checkthe trades to see if he's received anything thathas potential. (EC: Has he ever received a goldrecord . . . ?)

A party not to miss...! I knew I would misssome good parties while I was away ... and oneof them was the Balmur Ho! Ho! Ho! "verysplendid" affair, according to some of thepeople who were there. Anne Murray hosted theparty . .. and you don't very often see MadamePresident doing this kind of thing. I'm told allthe beautiful people from the industry werethere. (E.G. Now, that's stretching it wouldn'tyou say . . . ?)

Here's a hot one . . . or two! There areapparently two bidders fora giant retailer ... oneis American. Many in the know are hoping theAmerican group make the snatch. (EC: Somedeep pockets have holes in them, not to mentionsidepockets . . . !)

Isn't it interesting ... that still after all theseyears .. . and even with the arrival of the langs',Weights', Foxs' and Oysters', only Anne Mur-ray logs in the U.S. Top 100 charts. (EC: Whenyou've got it . . . !)

Way to go Roger...! Here's another program-mer who is making news. Our old friend RogerAshby, who hosts CHUM -FM's morning show, used his pipes and his old record library to raise$20,000 for the United Way. He held an OldieDance at the Royal York Hotel and within a halfhour of announcing the availability of tickets, more than 900 tickets were sold. Molson Cana-

dian Rocks was the financial sponsor of thedance which enabled Roger to donate everypenny from the ticket sales to the United Way.

Is there a big one for sale ... ? Rumours arerampant that one of the sudsers with a milk baseis being trimmed for the block. And they aren'tshopping the Asian market. (EC: Do I see adistributed trade brand taking over itsdistributor . . . ?)

Who's next...? There's one trade journal that'sconstantly going out on the limb with news ofwho's next on the takeover block, who's screw-ing who in the record business and generallysome pretty good stuff. Record company peopledon't want to read the news before it's officialand they certainly don't want their dirty laundryaired before they have a chance at the bleach. But the reporters for this U.S. trade journal arepatched into some pretty good sources. Being asthey don't depend on record company advertis-ing dollars, they can call all the shots as they seethem . . . and it's quite often pretty scary stuff.Who's next to be taken over? Well, here's a hint. It's not an American company that's about to beplundered and it's not a Japanese plunderer . . .so you figure it out. (EC: Well, that certainlynarrows the field . . . !)

Is the industry growing up . . . ? The keyword for this coming year should be "adult".Watch for a heavy concentration on this muchignored age group. The youth market has crap-ped itself, although there are still huge sales tobe made with the heavy metal and rap followers, but the big attraction this year will be with bewith the over 25's. (EC: Radio has been sayingthat for the last couple of years . . . !)

It's now Sony Music . . . and another year! Thanks to all the visitors to RPM over the lastyear and we're looking forward to seeing evenmore of you this year. COVER STORY by Jill Lawless

Goddo looks to the future with blasts from the pastBack in the late 70s, Goddo was a fixture onCanada's hard rock scene. Albums like WhoCares, Goddo and An Act of Goddo sold stead-ily, and the Toronto trio graced many a stage andhigh school gymnasium, their popularitybuoyed by slightly off -kilter lyrics and leaderGreg Godovitz's bad boy antics.

Goddo fell out of sight shortly after the turnof the decade, but now they're back with 12Gauge Goddo, a collection of their best, supple-mented by two new tracks, on Justin Entertain-ment. Today Godovitz is considerably calmerthan in his heyday, sanguine about the band'soften tough luck in the past and hopeful aboutthe future.

"We broke up the band in about 1982," herecalls. "I got married, had two kids...Sort ofstayed around the music business for a while, butmy wife ran over me with the car. We had anargument, and she thought she'd end the argu-ment as fast as she could, so she ran me over withthe car. So from being a guy who was known forbeing pretty wild on stage, nobody wanted to seeme in a chair. I was in a chair for about ayear...That effectively killed what was left of mymusic career."

"I got a job working for an American elec-tronics company as national sales manager. I didthat for three years. Then I got the bug again. Igot real bitter. I'd sit around and watchMuchMusic and pass comments...Jealous, youknow? So Renata, my wife, finally said, 'I'mtired of you sitting around the house. Go getyourband back together and play."'

Godovitz soon discovered that Gino Scar-pelli and Doug Inglis, the other two members ofGoddo, were just as happy to be back in music ashe was. Canadian record companies were lessenthusiastic. "We tried everybody," he laments.

"We have a full album's worth of material in thecan, waiting to go. But nobody wanted to knowabout us. Everybody passed on the material. We've had some really good nibbles from Eu-rope and the States, but nobody in Canada. So wedecided to go in through the back door thistime."

"Terry Brown and I went in and remastered(the songs), and I'm really pleased with the wayit sounds," he comments. Indeed, Goddo 's mate-rial sounds remarkably fresh more than ten yearsafter it was first released. "I think we made reallygood records ten years ago and they've stood thetest of time," muses Godovitz. "We were alwayscareful in the old days. If the new toy was a wawapedal, we never used it. I can hear a record from1967 and tell it's from 1967 just because of thetoys most of the guys use. Guitar players are theworst for that. We really tried to stay away fromthat."

Even as they reintroduce music fans totheir past, Godovitz is trying to concentrate onthe future. "What's that expression about every-thing that's old is new again? I think we're aperfect case in point for that," he says. "We'rereal thankful to be given another chance. I'm amusician, and I should never have done any-thing else. I made some bad mistakes in the olddays, and it's unfortunate, but your whole life isjust decisions, and we all have to live with thosemistakes. I'm sort of tired of apologizing for thepast. I wish we could just get on with the newstuff. But we've put ourselves in that position, too, because we've released a compilation of oldstuff, and so everybody wants to hear about theold days. And there's not too much positive toreport about the old days other than the music."

Godovitz says the band has learned fromits mistakes and has entered a whole new era.

    RPM - January 19, 1991 - 5

"The band's playing really hot these days," hesays. "We're approaching it more profession-ally than we did in the old days. We've got (anew album) basically finished now, except thatwe had to give up two of the songs for thecompilation. I'll probably write three or fourmore songs before we have to worry about itcoming out. It's nice of Justin to give us anopportunity to put this project out. If the publicbacks it then they've got an option to pick itup...We really want to go out and tour. I've gotmixed feelings about touring, because I miss mykids when I go out. That's going to be difficult. But I want to be a success at this again, and youhave to pay the price." The band is also prepar-ing to film a video, and has had interest as faraway as Denmark.

Godovitz hopes he has learned to save thebest of his younger attitude, without making thesame mistakes again. "We always masked anyreally heavy statements with the fact that theband has its tongue really firmly in its cheek. Wehave to, to be pushing 40 and comingback...What I really hate is when you get some-one coming up and they say, 'you're reallyputting on the pounds, eh?.' Give me a break. Itwould be nice if we could stop the clock, but wecan't. What do they expect? I'm 40 years old. Ilook 40 years old."

Nonetheless, he is ecstatic to be back. "It'salmost like how Christians are reborn. That'show I feel about this. I feel really high about thisagain. I hope it stays like that.

New FM policy to be installed September 1991: CRTCIn an effort to place "greater emphasis on Cana-dian talent" and provide "more flexibility" forradio stations, the Canadian Radio -Televisionand Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)has completed and outlined a new policy for FMradio. The policy comes into effect September 1,1991.

Most notable will be the increase in Canconrequirements for FM radio from 20 from 30 per-cent. Currently, cancon requirments can varyfrom station to station, with requirements rang-ing anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. The newpolicy will make all stations consistent. Excep-tions to this will be ethnic, instrumental and spe-cial interest stations, which will have require-ments between seven and 30 percent. Stationswill also have to broadcast a minimum of threehours a week of news.

The number of times a hit can be playedwill continue to be restricted on all FM radio, butthe new policy states that a Canadian song thatachieves hit status (by entering the top 40) canbe played as a "non -hit" after a twelve- monthperiod. This will enable broadcasters to play thesong more than the eighteen plays per weekmaximum for top 40 songs. French language FM

stations, however, will not be subject to any re-strictions in the number of times they play hits,in recognition of their "particular circum-stances."

CRTC Chairman David Colville states that"the Commission's new FM policy is designedto create more opportunities for Canadian per-formers and creative talent, while giving sta-tions greater flexibility to meet their audience'sneeds in a highly competitive market place."

Colville goes on to say that these newrequirements will no longer be treated as "condi-tions of licence" but as actual radio regulations,as is already the case with AM stations, and thatthe CRTC intends on being "even more strictabout enforcing them."

Whereas FM station will have to meet thesenew these requirements on a daily basis, themore fragile AM stations will have the option tofulfil them on a weekly basis, allowing for morefreedom in programming.

The Commission is intending that 25 per-cent of the Canadian programming be playedbetween six a.m. and 7 p.m., peak listeningtimes.

Also affected by the new policy are adver-

tising regulations, which have been increasedslightly from a 150 minute daily maximum to aweekly maximum of 15 percent of air time, which works out to an approximate increase of12 minutes per day. Sixty minutes a week of thisallocation can be omitted from this count, how-ever, if the ads are run during Canadian syndi-cated programming at specified times. Thisis one means through which the CRTC will beencouraging stations to commit air time to Cana-dian artists, reflecting "the importance theCRTC places on Canadian talent development."

A reduction in the number of formats usedto define FM stations has also been established. The CRTC will no longer differentiate betweensoft or hard pop and rock, streamlining down toonly three formats: Pop, Rock and Dance.

A review of student and community radiopolicies will be conducted "to examine the po-tential impact on them by the new FM policy."

Colville remarks that in the future theCommission will undertake to "devote its re-sources to majorissues and trends such as digitalradio, which are expected to have a significantimpact on the development of the entire radioindustry."

Warner Music's year "ended up with a bang" - KulinThe figures aren't in yet, but record sales for thelast month of the year obviously created anupturn in the business. Several retailers report"excellent" to "phenomenal" sales for the monthof December, most in the waning days beforeChristmas.

"The year ended up with a bang for us,"reports Stan Kulin, President of Warner MusicCanada. He continues with, "While we wereconcerned at the end of September, we ended upslightly ahead of last year, which was the bestyear in our history. The final three months of the

year were just outstanding."Kulin is quick to point out that product was

the key from his company's standpoint. He re-vealed that Warner Music commanded mostretail charts. "We had five or six of the top tentitles on most retail charts . . . and I think that'swhat made the difference. We find ourselves

Brockum starts year withpower artist agreementsEarlier this month, Brockum Company, themerchandising division of Toronto -based BCLEntertainment Corporation, acquired the exclu-sive worldwide merchandising rights to Metal-lica, David Lee Roth, Great White and TheReplacements.

The deals, extending to touring, wholesale, mail order and licensing, were inked in lateDecember and are effective immediately.

"Brockum is particularly pleased to berepresenting these stellar clients," states newly -appointed Vice President for Acquisitions,Gerry Brad, from New York. "The merchandis-ing industry has become extremely competitiveand we are proud that our association with eachact has been renewed."

Brockum is the Canadian leader in mer-chandising, with a roster of over 100 top namesin the entertainment industry and officesthroughout the world. In the last decade, themerchandising industry has exploded, and withthe growing demand for any kind of artist para-phernalia imaginable, it has become one of themost lucrative components of the music indus-try.

Allen LeWinter, North American Directorof Sales and Marketing added that "each act isunique. Metallica, for example, is a merchan-diser's dream come true. . . they are the numberone act worldwide in hard rock merchandising."

In signing with David Lee Roth Brockumalso scored an enormous coup. Although theyhad already had a deal with Roth, it only encom-passed tour merchandise, but the new agreementextends to retail and is worldwide. And withRoth heading out on a world tour in February, this association will be particularly profitable.

International Director of Sales and Market-ing, Monica Netpsky, commented from Londonthat "the growing awareness of rock and rolloutside North America through increased tour-ing, MTV Europe and growing records sales inplaces like South East Asia has made retailers farmore receptive to our products. Stores are con-stantly looking for more than just T-shirts. Ourwallets, back patches, denim jackets and hats areshowing huge sales gains."

going into the first quarter maintaining that kindof strength." Warner Music's new year wasgiven an added boost with the shipping of thenew David Lee Roth album which many believewill be a giant seller.

Ironically, it was Warner Music's late re-leases that contributed most to the successfulyear end. Albums from Bette Midler, Phil Col-lins, INXS, Blue Rodeo, the Traveling Wilburys,Debbie Gibson, the box set from Led Zeppelinand more. The added plus factor is that they areonly on the first, second and the rare third singlefrom these albums, which leads Kulin to predict"a very strong first quarter".

With more sensible ordering and salesforces that skirt "overloading", returns are be-coming less and less worrisome. Warner Mu-sic's return policy has always been among thetighter ones in the business and, as Kulin pointsout, "Our returns have always run at least 50percent of the overall industry, excludingWarner Music."

One of the first to recognize the waningpopularity of vinyl product, as of January 1st ofthis year, Warner Music has instigated a no -return policy for vinyl. The record industry haslong been accused of ignoring the "huge vinylmarket", but, says Kulin, "Vinyl sales for themonth of December, which was a very strongmonth for us, represented about 1/4 of one per-cent of our total sales . . . so where's this hugemarket? We released a number of titles in vinyllast year and found ourselves left with half theoriginal pressings."

Kulin, however, does believe that CDs "areexploding" and that CD prices are "realistic",stressing that the price for a CD today " is $3.00less than it was three years ago." Kulin doeshowever, question the logic behind some of thediscounting by retailers. "I saw the Led Zeppelinbox set being discounted the first week of re-lease . . . the hottest item on the street. In fact, Ibelieve it was that box set that triggered thecrowds returning to the record stores ... yet, thefirst week it was out . . . when they could havesold all they had for $75.00 a pop, some retailerswere selling it for $60.00, which gave them amuch lower margin."

As for next year? "I think '91 will be afairly tough year," says Kuhn. "Hopefully, all ofour retailers will survive, but I think that duringthat eighties phenomenon there was rather seri-ous over -expansion."

Sony's Keven Jordan setto release debut albumCanadian Sony Music artist, Keven Jordan, wasbusy filming the first video from his debut albumin Toronto last week in preparation for the re-lease of the first single and title track, No Sign OfRain.

Jordan was signed by Sony Music (thenstill known as CBS Records) one year ago, andhas recently completed recording of the album.Produced by Jordan and part co -writer Tim Mc-Cauley, No Sign Of Rain will be serviced to A/Cand CHR formats.

"It's A/C with a dark side," says Jordan. "Ithas a definate edge to it."

Predicting the next ten years in the recordbusiness "would be difficult," says Kuhn. However, he does venture with the predictionthat "the CD, or some form of the CD technologywill still be around ten years from now. Beyondthat, can I predict that you will be getting yourentertainment at home through a cable system? We hear of high definition television that willhave a screen three or four times larger than whatwe have today, with the thickness of a pictureframe that you can hang on your wall and withthe clarity you are currently getting in a movietheatre, plus stereo sound. As well, you may beable to program the music you want through acentral source either through satellite or throughcable." Kulin further predicts that if technologygoes to that point, "there will have to be tariffs ... some form of charge. Because, if there isn't, ifthe creators don't see a return on their invest-ment, why would they want to go on creating?"He concludes with, "I think certain segments inthe industry in Canada have recognized that fora number of years and that's why getting theperformance rights into our Copyright Law is so

    important."

Duke Street's Siberry toWarner Music CanadaAfter an association that lasted six years andproduced four successful albums (one gold),Duke Street Records has announced that JaneSiberry has reached an agreement with WarnerMusic Canada Ltd. whereby all future Siberryrecordings will be released through WarnerMusic worldwide, including Canada.

Duke Street President Andy Hermant re-veals "Duke Street played an important role ingetting Siberry's talent recognized in the record-ing industry, worldwide, at a time when JaneSiberry's music flew in the face of a 'corporaterock' mentality." Hermant adds "We are proudof the accomplishments we have made together, both artistically and commercially. It is nowtime to let go, and for Jane to pursue her manycreative interests directly with the power andclout of Warner Music Canada and their affili-ates around the globe." He concludes with "Iwish her all the very best in her new endeavours, and I will always be a devout Jane Siberryadmirer."

Siberry comments about the move "I ap-preciate everything Duke Street has done for meand look forward to my future with WarnerCanada."

MARK KNOPFLER& CHET ATKINSNeck And NeckColumbia CK 45307-H

Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and coun-try's Chet Atkins teamed up to recordNeck And Neck, a laid back collection ofsome of the country genre's favouritetunes and one original, the Knopfler-penned The Next Time I'm In Town, well in keeping with the simplistic natureof the album. The first track released asa single is the opening Poor Boy Blues,a steady rendition of the Paul Kennerlytune, with down-to-earth vocal work byboth Knopfler and Atkins who sharemost of the singing on this rather sub-dued work. The pair do an instrumentalof Sweet Dreams, one of the manytunes Immortalized by Patsy cline, anda tongue-in-cheek commentary on thelife of a "star" with There'll Be SomeChanges Made. The immersion intocountry Is no surprise from Knopfler, but the album seems to be an exerciseIn enjoyment rather than the quest for ahit. The musicianship is of course, let-ter-perfect, and Neck And Neck willdefinitely see more of the action it is

already getting at retail and radio.

Thehigh point of Pair A Dice Found is anintense cover of the Harrowing BarryMcGuire hit Eve Of Destruction. Otherhighlights include the bluesy BrandNew Toy and the lovely ballad To beWith You. writing and production credits go toMcGale, who with help from his twobandmates has recorded an album thatis straight -ahead blues -influenced rockwith a European flavour. The tunes aresimple, to the point and very meaty.First single Risin' Up is a bright, high en-ergy tune that is making headway ontoAOR as could Any Old Night, Jammin'At The Jook Joint and Loner. The funkyHell In High Heels and steamy CoolBlue Flame are also standouts on thealbum. Many of the album's songs arealready popular through Buzz Band'slive performances, and this well -craftedalbum promises to carry the successover to retail. (CD reviewed) - AM

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS -DanceThe Raw And The RemixI.R.S. - MCASD-10125

Why, you might ask, do we need a FineYoung Cannibals remix album? Goodquestion. It may be because the band, which had the number one record of1989 with The Raw And The Cooked, hasn't been heard from in some time. This album is largely redundant forpeople who have The Raw And TheCooked, but at least most of the re-mixes here don't do any real harm to thesongs. While the 12" version of GoodThing dissipates its considerablepower, the New York Rap Version of I'mNot Satisfied gives the song new life, and Monie Love's rap puts an ironictwist on She Drives Me Crazy. Still,Remix is for diehard fans and inveteratedancers only. (CD reviewed) -JL

    SARA HICKMAN -Folk/RockShortstopElektra - CD 60964-P

On her follow-up to Equal ScaryPeople, her 1989 debut, Texan SaraHickman shows herself to be more thanjust another young woman with anacoustic guitar; she's an ambitious andsometimes innovative singer and song-writer. While she apparently sub-scribes to the school that says if youhave an acoustic guitar you're a protestsinger, she also reveals vocals whichare both strong and subdued, and acapable musical eclecticism; the songson Shortstop, built around Hickman'sacoustic strumming, reveal traces offolk, rock, country and blues, and con-tain nice touches of clarinet, sax, per-

cussion and classical guitar. Lyrically,Hickman ranges wide, from an ode toSalvador Dali to understated tales ofeveryday life. A quiet but forceful pres-ence, Hickman is clearly a talent towatch. (CD reviewed) -JL

The most interesting things about SanFrancisco area funk/rock quartet Lim-bomaniacs are their influences. Whiletheir most obvious point of reference isthe Living Colour/24-7 Spyz school ofhard rock/funk, the Limbomaniacs alsoshow the influence of funk mastersJames Brown and George Clinton,California rap and San Francisco'shardcore scene. All of this makes aninteresting mix, and it can yield interest-ing results, as on the funky Freestyle. But these guys combine their musicaleclecticism with a penchant for lyricsfilled sophmoric humour and ado-lescent machi8mo. The Connells are a rock band with defi-nite alternative style, and although theyare Americans their sound is quite Brit-ish, even the vocal work by DougMacMillan has a slight affectation to it.But it sounds good. The tone of thealbum is fresh and somewhat naive, one gets the impression the album hasbeen cooking for a long time and thelyrics express a certain innocence thatis not always carried over onto themusic. The combination makes forsome very catchy tunes. In particularthe opening Stone Cold Yesterday and

Tandem Records starts aBuzz with new BandFormer Offenbach guitarist John McGale was inRPM's offices earlier this month, spreading theword about his latest musical endeavour, Buzz

McGale teamed up with bassist Breen-eboeuf, also of Offenbach and former AprilWine drummer Jerry Mercer, and the trio hasjust released their self -titled debut on Montrealindie label, Tandem Records.

Offenbach was a blues rock band thatgained superstar status in Canada, especially inQuebec. McGale wrote many of the band'ssongs, and when they broke up in 1985 hecontinued writing with the same enthusiasm.Buzz Band also features a bluesy/rock sound,

Although this album features ten of hissongs, McGale stresses that he and the band area powerful writing team. "I'll see black, andmaybe Breen will see white on a certain song. This makes writing very interesting. It com-pletes the process and makes the song better."

McGale also takes production and somemixing and engineering credits for this latesteffort, but states that the band works together onthe music: "the band is responsible for the ar-rangements. As musicians they know exactlywhat to do, and I just let them do their thing."

Buzz Band signed a three-year contractwith Tandem Records, which is distributed byFusion III throughout Canada. The band and la-bel -owner John Morin are confident Buzz Bandwill do well. Currently, the band has already de-veloped a following through gigging, and thesongs on the album are ones that are known andrequested by Buzz Band fans.

Risin' Up is the first single, and has beenserviced to AOR formats thus far. The new yearwill bring another release and Morin states thatthat track will go to multiple formats.

John McGale of Buzz Band, signed to Montreallabel, Tandem Records, with RPM's Alison Mercer
