them in Christ and then bear the fruit of sowing seed

and watering seedlings. God made the church to be a

place of constant cultivation and harvest as the faith is

passed one to another, and from generation to genera-

tion.

We plant and water then wait. Yet, every garden needs

some “barn dirt” to flourish. I am amused by how

Thornton Wilder’s statement, “Money is like manure;

it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encour-

aging young things to grow.” Perhaps this is a good

analogy for how we steward the financial resources

God has entrusted to us. We all know folks who ob-

ject to talking about money in church because it is

unspiritual or dirty. So let’s take a page from Thornton

Wilder, and think about our financial stewardship to

be like “barn dirt” we spread around to encourage

growth.

You and I are cultivating for the common purpose to

make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation

of the world. So many plant and water in worship,

Sunday school, small

groups, in ministry with

children and youth, and

through a vast array of mis-

sional outreach to our com-

munity and world. Our fi-

nancial commitment to the

church is a means to help

“young things to grow.”

In This Issue

We moved to Toney, Alabama only a few months af-

ter Maggie was born. One of the first things we did to

make the little brick parsonage our “home” was to

plant flowers in the two brick planters on each side of

the carport. We planted and watered then waited. The

poor little Impatiens survived until Linda’s parents

came for a visit from Culleoka, Tennessee with a bur-

lap sack in the back of the truck. The sack was filled

with “barn dirt.” The flowers were replanted in a soil

enriched by Culleoka “barn dirt.” We planted and wa-

tered then watched the explosion of blooms as the

Impatiens thrived and flourished.

The Bible uses the imagery of cultivation to describe

the life of faith. The faithful are like “tree planted be-

side water” according to the Psalmist (Psalm 1). While

Jesus describes discipleship to be like branches con-

nected to the True Vine (John 15). In his first letter to

the Christian’s in Corinth, Paul describes the mission

and work of the Church in terms of planting and wa-

tering.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. 1 Corinthians 3:6-8 (NRSV)

He is reminding us all that the work sowing and water-

ing is shared work. whether Paul or Apollos, a pastor

or volunteer, we all serve for “a common purpose”, so

that people will know the abundant life available to

Fall Family Fun Day!

This Sunday, October 8, we will have our Fall Fami-

ly Fun Day! We will be going to Bennett Farms in

Heflin.

The cost is $5 (adults) and $10 (children). If we have

more than 20 people go, the children will receive a

$3 pumpkin in their cost of admission. If we do not

have at least 20 people, pumpkins are not included.

This cost includes everything: Hayride, farm animals,

pipe slide, wagon train, hay maze, tire crawl, and

more activities.

The do have a "Country Store" and concession

stand if you want to bring a little extra money.

We will meet at the church (Back parking lot) at

12:30 to head to the farm.

We are not planning on taking a van, so everyone

will need their own transportation. If this is a prob-

lem, please let me know and we can figure some-

thing out. Remember: Safe Sanctuary policy applies

to all vehicles. Once another child who is not related

to you rides in your vehicle, we will need another

non-related adult in the vehicle.

Please let Mrs. Stacie know if your family is planning

on attending.
