Professional Connect: Science

Networking

What is networking?

Networking is about developing useful two way relationships with people who can help you in your career development and your search for work experience or employment. Networking is also a great way to find out more about what different jobs involve and what it’s really like working for particular companies. It is not about asking directly for employment initially – it is about building the links and connections that will put you in the best position to learn about and take advantage of opportunities.

A few tips for Professional Connect…

Remember - networking is just a conversation!

Before you start:

Think about what information you want to find out.

Generate some questions – for example, how did they get to where they are today? What work experience did they do? What do they enjoy most about their job?

Then:

Don’t be shy about approaching networkers – you are there to meet people, and so is everyone else! Join in with conversations that are already in flow (just sidle up politely and listen/contribute).

Introduce yourself, include information about your degree, society involvement and work experience.

Try to build a rapport with the person – don’t just fire questions at them.

Maintain eye contact and smile.

Be interested in what they have to say and what’s important to them.

Want to find out and do more?

Attending Careers events (such as employer presentations and recruitment fairs) is a great way of networking on campus.  Keep a look out for what’s coming up through the Careers webpages.

Also check the Careers’ online resources for more about networking through social media and to read information sheets about how to build and use your network to your advantage!
