Gilmour and Hughson Limited, 184!%-1926 482 vols . 125 ft.

The Gilmour family played a prominent part in the Scottish and Canadia n

lumber and ship-building business in the Nineteenth century. The firm was said to

be one of the largest sailing-ship owners in the world . Allan Gilmour (1775-1849)

was a senior partner in the parent firm of Pollok, Gilmour & Co ., a Glasgow concern

formed in 1804 from which numerous co-partnerships and offshoots evolved . Branches

were set up by various members of the family at Miramichi, Quebec, Montreal and

other locations in Canada . The Miramichi branch was opened in 1812 as "Gil ur,

Rankin & Co ." by James Gilmour (born 1782) brother of Allan Gil ur Sr . ; it closed

in 1870 . The Quebec branch, where numerous ships were built, was opened in 1828

as "Allan Gilmour & Co ." by Allan Gil ur (Junior) (1805-1884), nephew of Allan

Gilmour (Senior) and an expeqt in the construction and equipping of wooden ships .

Two brothers of Allan Gilmour Jr ., John Gilmour (1812-1877) and David Gilmour

(1815-1857) cam out in 1832 . They became partners in 1840, after Allan Gilmour Jr .

returned to Glasgow upon the retirement in 1838 of Allan Gilmour Sr . Allan Gilmour

Jr . retained his partnership in all the concerns until his own retirement in 1870,

although he remained a partner in the Canadian enterprises until 1877 . The Quebec

branch closed in 1878, shipbuilding operations having ceased in 1870 . Meanwhile

James Gil ur, another brother of Allan Gilmour Jr ., with ks cousin Allan Gilmour

of Shotts (1816-1895) had come out in 1832 as "cadets" in the Montreal partnership .

This had been founded in 1828 as "William Ritchie Co ." by another nephew of Allan

- 2 -

Gilmour Sr., William Ritchie. On Ritchie's retirement in 1841, Allan Gilmour of

Shotts and James Gilmour entered the partnership and took over this branch, which

dealt in supplies for the square timber trade on the Ottawa River. They renamed it

oGilmour & Co.", and soon set up a Bytown branch to procure timber and sawn lumber

for the Quebec market. Allan Gilmour of Shotts assumed management at Bytown, having

in addition control of mills at Trenton and the woods operations on the North Nation

and Blanche Rivers besides extensive operations on the Gatineau. In 1857 James

Gilmour retired ) as did Allan Gilmour of Shotts in 1872. The Montreal branch was

closed in 1878-1879. Meanwhile at the Quebec branch Robert Rankin, another partner,

had withdrawn in 1869; in 1877 John Gilmour died; leaving Allan Gilmour Jr. (who

had returned to Glasgow in 1839) the sole surviving partner of the "Allan Gilmour

& Co." of Quebec. In 1878 that branch also closed. The sons of John Gilmour,

John (1849-1912), Allan and David with John-David, their cousin, son of David Gilmour,

then took over the remaining enterprises, which now consisted of the Ottawa lumber

business and subsidiary operations. In September, 1890, the partnership of Gilmour

& Co., was dissolved. Allan and David Gilmour became "Gilmour & Co.," Trenton,

where a large saw-mill in conjunction with a planing mill and sash and door factory

was maintained. John Gilmour and his cousin John-David Gilmour formed a new

pmrtnership known as "John Gilmour & Co." John-David soon sold out his interest

to Ward Hughson, a prominent Albany lumberman. In November, 1891, a new partnership

was formed as "Gilmour & Hughson". On July 22, 1895, John Gilmour and Ward C.

3

Hughson of Ottawa and Nelson H. Salisbury, Frank C. Hughson and John C. Hughson of

Albany, petitioned to purchase the old firm and to incorporate it as Gilmour and

Hughson Limited (58-59 Vic. Chap. 89). The style "Gilmour and Hughson Limited" was

adopted in January, 1896. In that year the company was reported as owning large

limits on the Gatineau River and three saw—mills at Hull, on the Ottawa River and

at Chelsea. Deals were exported to Ehgland, but the firm manufactured chiefly for

the U.S. market. The Hull mill was said to produce 30 million feet in that year.

John Gilmourpresident of Gilmour and Hughson Limited, died in 1912, and one 1

of his six sons, Ward Hughson Gilmour, became managing director. As from April 27,

1921, all the properties formerly owned by Gilmour and Hughson Limited, and the

carrying on of operations, were taken over by the Gatineau Company Limited which

company was in turn owned and operated as a division of the Riordon Company

Limited of Montreal.
