Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of the Mercedes College Community

Good Luck – Mr Ali Last week I sent a letter to the families of our Junior School informing them that Frank Ali – Assistant Principal, Head of Junior School will be leaving us at the end of the year. Frank has been Head of the Junior School for the last nine years. Frank’s tenure at the College was for ten years. He is moving to St John’s Grammar at Belair where he will lead their Junior School. Although we will miss him at Mercedes we wish him well in his next venture.

Whilst at Mercedes Frank has been instrumental in establishing the IB PYP Programme as a dynamic curriculum which has enhanced the learning of our young people. He has been open to innovation and has been a great supporter of the growth of technology in the Junior School. Throughout his tenure Frank has also overseen the expansion of the Junior School to become a vibrant two streams at each year level. Frank is highly regarded by parents, staff and students and can be justly proud of the contribution he has made to the life of Mercedes. Later in the year we will organise an opportunity for our community to formally farewell Frank and acknowledge his wonderful contribution to the College. We will begin the process of finding a replacement for Frank in the near future and I assure you that we will do all we can to ensure a smooth transition.

International Recognition At an assembly on Monday 6 August we were pleased to be able to welcome Mr Richard Tangye, Executive Director of the Council of International Schools (CIS) who formally presented us with a plaque commemorating our CIS Accreditation which the College gained last year. Mr Tangye witnessed the talents of our local and international students and was left in no doubt about our commitment to providing a rich diversity of experiences for our students.

In his speech Mr Tangye expressed the need for individuals and organisations to maintain a commitment to ongoing self-improvement. As a school we can be proud of what we have and excited by what can and will be in the future. CIS accreditation is hard earned and to maintain it requires ongoing work, but the credibility it gives us on the international stage is well worth the effort. Thank you once again to all staff, parents and students who were involved in the Self Study process and Team Review in 2006.

A Friday thought…

In just under a year, at 8pm on 8 August, the Beijing Olympics will begin. Hopefully, they will bring together the champions of sport in a festival which will strengthen solidarity and promote peace among all who share our world.

China’s sports officials have a goal of bettering the US medal count and, apart from the huge amounts being spent on specific venue preparation, the Chinese authorities are spending forty billion dollars to rebuild and clean-up Beijing itself, including the huge task of addressing the traffic-choke and pollution. China has used the games to promote itself as a visitor-friendly and open society which welcomes people of all persuasions and cultures.

Unfortunately, the experience of those in China who wish to exercise the democratic rights taken for granted in many other nations has been and continues to be very different. We remember the most memorable, tragic and widely publicised example of rights being suppressed in 1989 when, according to the Chinese Red Cross, the toll in the Tiananmen Square protests was 2000-3000. Sadly, the experience of the Catholic Church in China suggests that, in spite of the cheerful externals and the publicity, repressive and harsh treatment continues for those who oppose the government’s thinking.

In May this year, in an effort to ease the tensions between the Church and the Chinese authorities, Pope Benedict wrote to the Church in China. In his letter, the Pope praised the recent social and economic achievements of the Chinese people and he offered sincere dialogue with the civic authorities, in a spirit of friendship and peace. For many years, the Chinese Church has been persecuted, its priests and bishops locked in prisons and sometimes tortured and, where there has been some religious practice allowed by the authorities, the government has itself appointed the bishops, repudiating any link with the universal Church. Pope Benedict, in his letter, said he renewed his

earnest wish that in the course of a respectful and open dialogue between the Holy See and the Chinese Bishops on the one hand, and the governmental authorities on the other, the difficulties may be overcome and thus a fruitful understanding may be reached that will prove beneficial to the Catholic community and to social cohesion.

Sadly, the response has not been encouraging. Reports have attested to priests being arrested and put into solitary confinement. It has been suggested that since May the priests’ conditions have worsened due to the Pope’s letter. It has also been reported that priests have been held in labour camps and that relatives are forbidden to visit them. Some priests have stated that the violence against the Church shows the Chinese authorities’ contempt for Benedict’s offer of a hand of friendship. Apart from the Church, other groups report that abuses continue to occur, with Amnesty International attesting that authorities are using the Olympics as “a catalyst for a continued crackdown on human rights defenders”.

What is our response in Australia? In the media blitz focussing on Olympic excitement, I suspect that human rights will be less than central. In a sign of our Olympic representatives being told to remain ‘on message’, the Australian Olympic Committee has decreed that Australian athletes at the Beijing Olympics will be barred from commenting on controversial topics such as China’s human rights record or the annexation of Tibet. Australian sporting

legend Raelene Boyle condemned this. “I find it hard”, she said, “to believe we should gag people, especially as one of the key things that people of profile do is make good (things happen) for the community.” Olympic gold medallist Kieren Perkins said he did not agree with a complete ban. “I don’t think anybody could agree with the complete silencing of everybody,” he said.

China was awarded the Olympic Games with the tacit expectation of so many nations around the world that the event would lead to respect for the rights of all its citizens. We can but hope that the lessons of the 1936 Berlin Olympics have been learned, an Olympics which were intended to proclaim to the world the virtues of the then German government and to hide and distract attention from the suppression of rights taking place in that country. It is a fundamental principle of our own nation, with its inherited Christian values, that all people are worthy of dignity and respect. Hopefully, our government and people will continue – together with other free peoples of the world – to press the Chinese authorities to manifest in practical deeds a support for the freedoms they proclaim.

Year 5 Presentations

The Year 5s have just completed a Unit of Inquiry entitled Saving the Missing Link. This unit comes under the PYP Transdisciplinary Theme, Sharing the Planet. The central idea for this unit is “many animal species are declining for a variety of reasons”. The summative assessment for this unit was for students to give a 5 minute oral presentation with the support of a PowerPoint to a parent audience on one endangered species. These presentations were held on Monday 6 August and the Year 5 students presented some convincing and articulate presentations to their parents. As part of the process students were asked to reflect on their presentations.

Melissa Buske Year 5 Presentations – Saving the Missing Link Midway through Term 2 we started the topic, Saving the Missing Link. At the end of the topic we had to do a speech in front of parents, teachers and students. I felt very nervous. When I did my speech on the black rhino, I thought I was a risk taker because I didn’t really want to do it, but I still did. In my speech I was knowledgeable by telling the parents all I knew about the black rhino. I think I was a communicator when I talked to everyone about the black rhino for 5 minutes. I was caring by letting everybody know about what is happening to the black rhino. I had been an inquirer by finding out all I could about the black rhino. I thought I went really well presenting my speech. I thought I had a very clear voice and I had good eye contact. Overall my speech and PowerPoint worked very well together. I think next time I’d speak a little louder and maybe make my PowerPoint a little bit more interesting. I feel relieved now the speech is over, but I’m still happy I did it.

Ben Reynolds 5MB

I think by standing in front of the parents and reading my speech I became a risk taker because I didn’t like speaking in front of an audience. I think my PowerPoint slides were really good because I worked really hard on getting them perfect. I was an inquirer because I researched my animal a lot so that my speech was well prepared. I chose to research the Sumatran tiger because I have liked tigers since I was a little kid. When I went on the Zoosnooze I learnt a lot about the tiger. I was a communicator because when I did my speech I was communicating to the audience.

UNIFORM CHANGE – Boys Shorts/Trousers Due to supply of the green shorts becoming more difficult, a decision has been made to change the colour of the shorts and trousers to charcoal. This initiative helps to streamline the uniform by having only one colour, instead of green shorts and light grey trousers. Stocks will be available at the end of 2007. The transition period will be during 2008, in which boys may choose to wear either the green or charcoal shorts. It is recommended that by 2009 all boys will be wearing the new charcoal colour. Samples are currently available in The College Shop.

Academic Awards Assembly On Wednesday 15 August the Middle School gathered in the Hall to congratulate the Academic Award winners for Semester One. We were joined by a large group of parents and families for this occasion in which we recognised the hard work and commitment of our award winners throughout the last semester that enabled them to achieve such terrific results.

Whilst it is not possible for us to present all students with certificates of Academic Excellence, we should recognise that there were many students who were able to achieve their personal best in individual subjects or across the range of their subjects last semester. These students have also demonstrated the ability to work hard and commit themselves to their studies. I take this opportunity to congratulate all students who were able to achieve their personal best last semester and to encourage all Middle School students to continue approaching their learning with a positive attitude, enthusiasm and energy.

Construction Ball It was great to see so many Middle School parents and staff at the Construction Ball last Saturday night. Who would have thought that you could make a generous contribution to the school and enjoy good food, entertainment and company all at the same time? Thank you for your support! Well done to all of the organisers of this wonderfully successful event.

Learning Reviews Year 6-10 Learning Reviews will be held on Thursday 6 September in the Carmel Bourke Library. These reviews are aimed at assisting students who are experiencing some difficulties in their studies and are by arrangement only. Teachers will soon be making contact with parents if they feel there is a need to discuss their child’s progress in their subject.

This is also an opportunity for parents to make contact with specific teachers if they have any concerns they wish to discuss about the progress of their child(ren) and arrange a time to meet with them on this night.

Essay Competition Congratulations to Emma Cormack and Nicholas Goggin of 7MR who received commendations for the Commonwealth Essay Competition. Emma and Nicholas both entered short stories during Term 1 of this year. The 2007 Competition drew over 6,300 entries from 1,300 schools across the Commonwealth and only 45 students in Australia received special, high or regular commendations, making Emma and Nicholas’ achievement pretty special. Well done!

6PO Poetry I recently had the pleasure of being invited to a poetry recital in the 6PO classroom being the culmination of a unit of work the class had done. It was fantastic to see the enthusiastic and energetic approach of the students to their poetry and I was very impressed with the creativity and initiative reflected in the various poems they had written. Congratulations to all the students for their efforts and to their teacher, Ms O’Grady, whose passion and commitment for this work was clearly evident. Below is a brief description of one of the tasks the students had and two examples of the outstanding poems the class produced.

Recently 6PO worked on a poetry assignment which included creating our own poems. We used Lewis Carrol’s poem “Jabberwocky” as inspiration, using some of our own “made up” words.

Inexpressibly it replemphed there, enphined by the rain It had no name amphined to it, Until a father discreditable belemfed with much pain, “Jack my son, go and name the It. Diverent my son, take a glonder in hand, be not fastidious or you shall shivinit with thee”. Will Cernev

Personal Project Exhibition The Year 10 Personal Project Exhibition will take place in The Parlour (Strathspey) on Wednesday 26 September from 6:30-8:30pm. This is an opportunity for Year 9 students and parents to visit the exhibition and marvel at the displays and performances of the Year 10 students. It will also give them an insight into the requirements of this unique body of work, and be an excellent method of preparation for their own Year 10 personal projects.

From the Senior School When we talk about educating the whole person, a quick review of the last two week’s happenings at the College more than verifies the all-round education we offer in this very special place. As you read this our Outdoor Education group at Year 11 and Year 12 are trekking through the snowfields on the way to Roper Outlook, where I am assured they will have a great experience of track skiing and witness magnificent views of Falls Creek. I look forward to their safe return at 6:00pm on Saturday 18 August. The annual Canberra Odyssey returned last Saturday and by all reports was a wonderful experience enjoyed by all. The highlight was the visit to the Australian War Memorial. The past week has been our Languages Week and the students were involved in many different cultural experiences and became totally immersed in both French and Indonesian for a full day. As part of our different approach to Learning Reviews we extended the period of time for the reviews and managed to interview all parents, helping to guide them in our team approach with a view to obtaining the maximum potential from each of our students. The following is a list of students who will be receiving an Academic Award for their accomplishments in Semester 1 at a special assembly next Wednesday 22 August. If your son/daughter is on the list you should have received an invitation; if not please contact the Rose Garden Office. The criteria for the Awards is, at SACE level, students must achieve a level that equates to more than 80% and in the International Baccalaureate, over 75%. These students should be very pleased with their efforts and I offer them our congratulations from the College.

Debating SADA Results of Round 4 held at St Peter’s Collegiate Girls 31 July and Norwood Morialta High School 1 August.

Year 8: Mercedes 1 (Ms Zotti) The team of Nick Davis, Alex Sch emeczko and Luke Crocker taking the negative argument of the topic “That we are failing Indigenous Australians” defeated St Mary’s. This is a difficult and sensitive topic and challenged all students to see differing viewpoints on indigenous issues.

Mercedes 2 (Mrs Barber) This group taking the affirmative argument of the topic “That the voting age should be lowered to 16” were narrowly defeated by Scotch College. Gabby McEvoy, Marisa Mackenzie and Natasha Wilson-Beddoe presented sound arguments which were the result of detailed research. This week however the adjudicator looked primarily at rebuttal as the assessment focus, and whilst Mercedes were sound, adjudication marks decided that Scotch were marginally better. Thank you to Tanya Barone for chairing so well.

Mercedes 3 (Mrs Barber) The group of Maddy D’Angelo, Luke McAlister and Erin Murray had their third win for the season agreeing with the topic “That 13 is too young to have a mobile phone.” This topic presented a challenge to students as many have their own phone or access to one and had to see alternative viewpoints. Mercedes used the team line that “it may be the latest trend, but it’s a hazard” as the focus of their well constructed argument. Thank you Hamish Collins for chairing the debate.

Year 9 (Ms Siviour) James Hallahan, Brigid Symes and Eliza Harvey taking the negative side of the issue “That sponsorship is ruining sport” were convincing winners this round.

Year 10 (Ms Kildare) Henry Arrowsmith, Olivia D’Arienzo and William Gloster, a competent team of industrious and knowledgeable individuals, had the negative side of the current social issue “That we are too soft on young offenders”. The team narrowly lost this week.

Senior A (Mrs Robertson) Holly Ritson, Ben Reichstein and Alex Mulders defeated Annesly College on the negative side of the topic “That we should support trading international pollution quotas.”

Thank you to the parents and supporters who continually brave the cold conditions to attend the debates, we are fortunate at Mercedes to have so much backing on competition nights and students really enjoy the experience of speaking in front of a large supportive audience. Our next round will be held on Tuesday 11 September at Christian Brothers College and for Year 10 on Wednesday 12 September at Glenunga International High.

Helen Barber Fee Accounts Term 3 fee accounts will be forwarded the first week in September and will include 1st Instalment Tuition Fees for 2008, as per our policy of invoicing one instalment in advance. Also included will be the family Term 3 Building Fund Levy and charges for sporting activities and other extension programmes. Family Matters – Young People Building Relationships

The recent Year 11 Retreats provided an opportune time for students to explore the significant relationships in their lives. Tony O’Doherty and I visited each Retreat site and spent time with students discussing key aspects of personal relationships including the core values of respect, trust and communication, the importance of setting safe boundaries, and how to support friends who may be placing themselves in risky situations.

Developing relationships is a new and exciting experience for young people. As adults, it is important for us to provide them with an understanding of the fundamental values that form the basis of healthy, strong relationships such as respect, communication, sharing, independence, trust, companionship and honesty. Peer groups play a very influential role in determining what “fun” in relationships is and parents can also have an influence through modelling behaviours and expectations within relationships.

Relationships do not always go smoothly, and when a young person is involved in a very intense relationship it can be difficult for them to identify issues that may start to arise and to know what to do when the relationship begins to break down. Parents and friends may notice behaviour changes when someone is experiencing a problem within a relationship.

Signs to look for: • They are losing interest in activities that they enjoy. • They are overly concerned with what their partner thinks. • They are making excuses for their partner all the time. • They start to avoid friends and social activities that don’t

include their partner.

What can parents do? Encourage your son or daughter to talk to you. Listen carefully and try not to be judgemental or tell them what to do. Encourage open communication. If there is difficulty within the relationship they will most likely be feeling very down about themselves.

It is important for parents to encourage their son or daughter to stay connected with friends and activities they are involved in outside of their first intense relationship. These will be important networks of support if there are problems or the relationship breaks down.

Help your son or daughter to work out realistic strategies to tackle issues within their relationships. This will depend on how willing they are to recognise problems.

If you have any concerns about helping your children build positive, healthy relationships or are unsure how to offer them support in this area, please feel free to contact me at the College.

International Students Programme It has been a busy few weeks for the ISP! Since the beginning of this term, we have welcomed new students to the school - Dorothy Hoi Man Chiang from Macau, Vincent Kam Kwan Lai from Hong Kong, Hong Suk Cho from Korea, Eva Peng Fang, Xuan Gao, Lillian Jia Li, Chen Tian and Xin Tong Zhan from China. We also enjoyed the company of Ewan Fournel and Sebastien Hernandez from France who joined the school for a cultural visit during the first few weeks of this term. Rotary Exch ange student from France, Anaelle Lemasson (11DG) has settled in and recently joined other Year 11s on their retreat near the River Murray. It was wonderful she could enjoy the “real Aussie” scenery so soon after her arrival in Adelaide. Mercedes College hosted some international journalists earlier this year, and we were pleased to see the school featured prominently in a recent article in the respected German newspaper “Die Zeit”. It can be read on their website, www.zeit.de/2007/31/C if your German is any good! The article, about 3 pages long, even includes quotes from Year 12JR student Max Glodde, from Berlin. We look forward to more international media exposure when future articles are published in Europe as a result of the media visit. The article in Germany has already created some interest in the school, and I have been delighted to receive enrolment enquiries since its publication. Principal, Peter Daw and Coordinator of ISP Student Welfare and Homestay, Robyn Halliday travelled to China during the July school holidays. They visited Beijing and Nanjing, to discuss the school with our Education Agents in those cities, and also to conduct parent-teacher interviews with the parents of our current students from China. Peter also had an opportunity to interview potential future students. At the same time Kala Nathan-Thompson, Coordinator of ISP Learning Programme and Educational Advisor, attended an ASEAS conference in Malaysia. As a result we look forward to welcoming Malaysian students to Mercedes College in the near future. Next week brings with it our newest student, Masahiro Koyanagi from Japan, who will be in Year 8TR. We look forward to welcoming him to Mercedes College and our school community.

OS Mercy Philippines Hospital Film Fundraiser

OS Mercy is a small group of young people concerned for social justice, supported by the Sisters of Mercy. We are raising money to help the Mercy community in the Philippines build a hospital. Please support us at:

Scott Hicks’ new film: No Reservations

Starring Catherine Zeta Jones Based on the German language Mostly Martha

Sunday 2 September 2:00pm, Palace Cinema, Rundle Street

Tickets $15

All money raised at this Film Fundraiser will go towards the hospital, managed by a team of Filipino nationals who are in charge of the building project in Tacloban City, Philippines. This hospital will have a huge impact on the local community, improving health services, increasing the capacity of medical staff training and acting as a base for community education and health promotion programmes. For tickets or more information, phone Joseph 0407 610 009. From the Development Office We’re building a new school and having a ball doing it! What an exciting and busy few weeks it has been, culminating with the Construction Ball last Saturday night. Thanks to all those who attended and looked stunning on the night (even one Tom Cruise ‘look alike’ I hear!). Your support was greatly appreciated, the organisation would have been futile without the nearly 400 guests who attended and made the night “buzz”. We are especially grateful to our Sponsors and Donors. The auctions and raffles alone made more than $20,000. We should be able to give you the final proceeds in the next Mercy Vine after all the accounts have been settled. This was our major fundraising event for the year and all proceeds will go to the College for the new building project. My sincere thanks go to all those who assisted in the preparation and on the night. The Adelaide Oval and our parent chef Maurice Maffei provided a memorable meal, wonderful wine was enjoyed which was provided by parents in the industry. Alf Talotta excelled as auctioneer, parents, students and staff helped during the day and on the evening, and the Jazz Band under the direction of Adam Hooper set the scene. Finally I acknowledge the small committee with whom I worked; Jenny Dunstan, Chris McMahon and Tony Adey. Their vision, enthusiasm, good humour and friendship will remain. The Ball is over, but don’t forget our next big project…..the Community Courtyard. For more information about purchasing a Paver please phone or email the Development Office. Intercollegiate 2007 at St Ignatius College The 3rd Intercollegiate Carnival against St Ignatius’ College at Athelstone commences next Wednesday with the cross country events. Students participating will be transported to and from the venue by bus departing Mercedes at 3:10pm and arriving back at Mercedes at 6:00pm. On Friday a bus will transport table tennis and debating participants to and from SIC, departing at 3:00pm and arriving back at Mercedes at 6:15pm. Please peruse the programme for details related to matches involving your family. It promises to be a great week of interaction for both communities. Parents can assist staff by ensuring playing uniform is in good order and immaculately worn. Travelling uniform is as per the normal requirement so that entire teams are attired similarly. All players need to arrive well before the start of scheduled matches. Programme

A feature of the sporting world for Mercedes this week was the exciting news that Old Scholar Hannah Davis, last weekend qualified through some very tough heats, the quarter and then the semi finals in the K2 1000m kayak to compete in the Open Women’s Final in the World Kayak Championships in Beijing. In the final Hannah and her kayak partner came 6th thereby qualifying the boat to represent Australia next year in the Olympics. The period from now till the final selection next year will be a testing time as this performance does not necessarily automatically select the paddler, just the boat itself, as there are limits to the number of crews that can represent their country in kayaking. Hannah needs to perform well in K1 and K2 events at international, local and interstate regattas between now and then to guarantee her an Olympic blazer. This would be a fitting reward for a student who was identified during Talent Identification PE lessons when she was in Year 8. Hannah has spent the past 10 years training on skis in the surf and at West Lakes in kayaks, doing an enormous amount of work to achieve at this very high level.

Sport last week featured clashes with some very large schools and whilst teams struggled in the score line department, it would be remiss not to mention the great spirit shown in most matches. The Open Table Tennis up against an unbeaten St Peters College managed to take four rubbers and made their contingent work hard in other matches. Mr John Saltans has been a terrific support to these players during 2007 and has made a great difference to their progress during the year.

In Soccer, the big surprise was the loss (4-3) by the 8As to Westminster having won all but one game during 2007. This team has been travelling very well under Adam Hooper’s coaching expertise and perhaps these boys can bounce back in preparation for the tough game expected against SIC next Saturday during the Intercol. St Paul’s College Open As were a very strong combination in the 2nd half of the game last week but the Open Bs restored some balance to the score line with a strong performance. The surprise package for 2007 is the Year 10/Open C team which drew with St Michael’s College, a fitting result for a group that has worked very well all year. Players will farewell Peter Landi this weekend who returns to Great Britain. Peter will be missed by team mates and we wish him and his family well.

St Michael’s indicated their strength of numbers in boys with a dominating performance on the Basketball court with our Open As short of two players in Keegan Brooksby and Nathan Chettle out with injuries. Our juniors were outclassed by St John’s Grammar.

Some excellent performances in Year 8 and 9 Football produced close score lines whilst the 1st XVIII could not match the strength shown by PAC. This Saturday’s clash with St Peter’s College highlights the nature of the ISSA draw. A school with a male population of 200 boys at Year 10, 11 and 12, cannot compete against schools like Rostrevor, Sacred Heart and St Peter’s College with 450 boys from which to draw their players. Our 2nd XVIII pitched against PAC’s 3rd XVIII was a more competitive game from which both teams would have drawn some value. Some solid work will need to be done by administrators in preparation for the 2008 season to configure a more balanced competition at the 1st XVIII Football and Open A Soccer levels. Currently SHC, Rostrevor, St Michael’s, St Peter’s and PAC dominate the

News from the Sports Desk (cont) competition with Pembroke probably ranked 6th, streets ahead of other schools in the football competition, whilst St Peter’s, Rostrevor, PAC, Blackfriars, CBC, St Michael’s and St Paul’s College lead the way in Open Soccer.

We will welcome the return of Waite Oval during Term 4 for cricket and softball following the Adelaide University’s decision to close the facility during the winter months initially due to a shortage of water, and later due to a shortage of winter grass coverage.

Awards Season wind ups will be scheduled for soccer, football, netball and other winter sports over the next month, after the Intercol, at which Coaches Awards will be presented to all winners. MVP awards will be presented for Year 12s at their Graduation Ceremony and for all other winners at the Sports Assembly at the end of the year.

8–12 Girls Sport Netball The season is drawing to a close and with only one game left for the 2007 Winter season, there are a few teams vying for the premiership flag. The 8As have continued to show exceptional form with some strong performances to date. The 8B team is also doing well, sitting 3rd and 6th half way through the season. All Year 9 teams have shown grit and determination throughout the season with the teams having some good wins and narrow losses to date. Our 10As are still in a position to place 2nd in the minor round, however have had some strong competition in the home stretch. 10Bs have come together nicely in the last few weeks, stringing together some impressive come from behind wins against two of the leading schools. After being pushed up into A grade, the Year 11 Open B team has shown resilience every week playing against some very experienced opposition. The girls are a credit to themselves and their perseverance is admirable. The Year 12 Open B team is in the hunt for a premiership flag enabling the girls to finish their final year on a high. Last, but not least, our Open C girls have come up trumps on numerous occasions to find success against opposition which defeated them on previous occasions.

Soccer The Year 10 team are close to securing a top two spot in their league with the Year 11 team not too far behind. Both teams have shown great determination and skill in tough games, a highlight being the game at school between both teams, Year 10 wining 2-1. The Year 9 girls are sitting on the top of the ladder for the Junior A grade, hopefully bringing home the flag for 2007. The Year 8 girls are in 3rd position and should maintain this spot into the play off round.

A great season by all the girls. Hope to report on their continued success in the next Mercy Vine.

Special Mention Madeline and Eleanor Wardleworth both competed in the Schools Orienteering Championships 2007 on Monday 13 August. Madeline was named State Champion after taking out her 15A event and Eleanor came 3rd in the 14A event. Congratulations to both girls.

Carol Guirguis Football The 2nd XVIII Football team took on a solid Westminster side last Saturday. From the outset the boys were there to win and four goals in the first quarter helped give the boys the confidence they needed. In the second quarter they scored a goal after 30 seconds. Paul O’Callaghan worked hard all day and pushed for another ‘Best on Ground’ award. The half-back line rebounded hard as Justin Cousins moved the ball out of the backline from fullback. The boys put all they had into the game and came out on top.

News from the Sports Desk (cont) Week 3 Term 3 Results

Cross Country Running The second half of our season has commenced with a number of students returning good results at the recent Sacred Heart College Middle School Host Day at the testing (hilly) Shepherds Hill Reserve, St Marys. In the biggest field of the meet Reeve Gillan (9:35.15) ran a strong race to finish 9th in the Primary Boys 2km Division. Again Madeline Wardleworth (16:49) and Eleanor Wardleworth (16:54) dominated the 3.6km Junior Girls Division finishing 1st and 2nd with Madeline preserving her unbeaten run in these ISSA events winning a tight tussle with little sister by 5 seconds. It is interesting to note the third placegetter from Concordia College finished 57secs behind Eleanor. Other notable Junior results were: Phillip Mundy 4th, Alexander Praschifka 7th, Brigid Symes 6th, Naomi Francis 8th.

Dominic Davis (22:02) continues to perform strongly in the 5.5km Senior Boys Division, finishing first over the line but second in times to National U20 Track Medallist, Chris Stapleton (SPC). Jac Ayers and Michael O’Flaherty struggled a

little on the hilly course but battled strongly to finish 9th and 10th respectively.

The results of the second host day are still to come through. However I can say Madeline Wardleworth (1st) and Eleanor Wardleworth (2nd) continued their dominance of Junior Girls events while Dominic Davis (2nd) improved on his previous week’s effort to finish close up behind Chris Stapleton (SPC) in the Senior Boys race. Natalie Hughes, Brigid Symes and Eleanor Kay also raced strongly to record encouraging performances in their preparation for the forthcoming National Championships in Perth.

A major event coming up is the August 22 Intercollegiate clash at St Ignatius College. Our Senior teams are as follows.

Boys: Dominic Symes, Dominic Davis, Jac Ayers, Michael O’Flaherty, Ciaran Banks, Phillip Mundy. Girls: Natalie Hughes, Madeline Wardleworth, Eleanor Kay, Brittany Hewett, Ella Shanahan.

City Bay Fun Run The City Bay Fun Run will be held on Sunday 15 September. I thoroughly recommend this event to the whole College Community – students, parents and staff. There are six events in which you can be involved covering 3, 6 and 12km in both Walk and Run Divisions.

If you would like to be involved please see either Mr McCabe, Mr Zeuner or collect a notice from the Physical Education Office. Why not run or walk as part of a Mercedes College team?

SAPSASA Girls Soccer In Week 10 of Term 2 the South Australian Girls Soccer State Championships were held at Victoria Park Racecourse. Mercedes College is in the district of Southern Heights. Four girls represented the College in the Southern Heights team. From all reports the girls all played really well despite the fierce competition. To play at the top level in this tournament was a fantastic experience for the girls. It was also a remarkable achievement for the Southern Heights team to win the tournament. Each of the girls received a medal for their achievement of becoming State Champions.
