WELCOME TO GONERFEST 8

by Shaun A, Leeds UK

You’ve parked up the VW, had a foot spa and aligned your chakras with the warm Memphis late summer (Memphis is on the exact longtitude of Stonehenge, fact fans!) and are no doubt looking forward to a soft drink and some of the world’s finest jam bands. It can only mean one thing!..Welcome to GONERFEST EIGHT! And for all of you who’ve travelled from outside this fair city, welcome to MEMPHIS!

Why not have a look around while you’re here and soak up this historic town. Memphis over the years has produced a number of fascinating people. These include Beverly Hills 90210 acress Shannen Doherty, former vice-chairman of the Federal Reserve David W Mullins Jr and the current Archbishop of Seattle J Peter Sartain! Memphis also has a rich pop music history as Jimi Hendrix attend-ed school in Memphis for two weeks in 1960 and subsequently wrote his most famous song ‘Purple Haze’ about

his time getting hazed for wearing a purple cravat during school hours, thus making Memphis a pilgrimage for music fans worldwide ever since.

Gonerfest though, is about NOW! Almost forty musical acts, some of which have been specially released from secure facilities as far apart as New York and Australia have all been injected with downers, strapped to airline seats and been shipped mum-bling and drooling across the world to be put on stage for YOUR AMUSE-MENT! It really doesn’t get any bet-ter. So kick back, relax and witness some of the world’s most troubled and introspective artistes in folk music today. RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES!

“Splendid entertainment! My wife could barely walk for laughing. Who says the great Victorian art of putting people with mental health problems on stage for sheer laughs was dead. Bravo Gonerfest” - Stately Home magazine

Praise for previous Gonerfests:

“The drinking was occasionally marred by people

with instruments plugging in and making a racket

but otherwise it was a fine weekend of getting

shitfaced” - Drinking Today

OBN IIIs (Austin, TX) 12:OO“These guys were the best thing I saw at SXSW this year by a long shot and I was completely unprepared for the onslaught. Orville’s like Iggy Pop gone boogie. Power Fist!!! - Zac / Goner “Representing the uncontrollable proto-punk urges surging beneath the surface of its members’ regular gigs, the semi-supergroup cuts an image of a revved-up Stooges—with name-sake frontman Orville Neeley capably strutting and stuttering in the Iggy Pop role.” - A.V. Club

TY SEGALL (San Francisco, CA) l:OO#1 Goner surf ‘n psycher is blowing up and for once it isn’t all hype -- our guy brings it every night. - Zac / Goner

“This San Fran shouter puts garage rock into overdrive... As fun as Ty’s recent albums have been, live is where you get to really experience him in all of his manic, bouncing, string-bending glory, not to mention enjoy his infectious humor.” - Village Voice

LIMES (Memphis, TN)Memphis’ forgotten son Shawn Cripps - 2 albums on Goner!

8PM DOORS AT THE HI TONEMusic from DJ RICK (Sacramento, CA) & DJ USELESS EATER (Kalamazoo, MI)And your emcee for the evening JOE PESTILENCE (New Orleans,LA)

SEX CULT (Memphis, TN) 9:OO“Out of all the Tennessee bands that we’ve never seen or ever heard any recordings from, Sex Cult has got to be our favorite. The Memphis bad boys have played a handful of shows and are knockin’ em dead over there. As far as we can tell, the lineup consists of members from Vile Nation, Bake Sale, and maybe a Magic Kid or two? It’s a little hard to get solid info on them since they don’t have any sort of internet presence at all (at least, not the Sex Cult we wanna know about).” - Nash-ville’s Dead

HANS CONDOR (Nashville, TN) 9:45Bringing a large dose of MC5 mega-guitar blast out of the Country / indie pop / nu indie blues of Nashville. Touring with Guitar Wolf has paid off!

MIKAL CRONIN (SF, CA) lO:3OI got to hear Mikal’s upcoming record on Trouble In Mind and it is so good it’s scary. Harmony moves in the midst of catchy but hard-rocking songs. Yeah, everyone wants to do that nowadays. But Mikal kills it. - Eric / Goner

ROYAL HEADACHE (Sydney, Australia) ll:l5“If you haven’t heard Royal Headache yet then we feel real sorry for you. They might be the best pop band to come out of Sydney since The Easybeats, or at least since The Radiators!” - Unbelievably Bad

CYCLOPS (???) 2:30We have no idea. You have no idea. - Eric / Zac / Madison

COASTING (Memphis, TN / Brook-lyn, NY (via Auckland, NZ)) 3:15

“I know that it’s just two people in a basement and they only have four hands and two mouths but if no one told me otherwise I’d assume Coasting was a full on Glenn Branca quintet pound-ing away at

the same woozy melodies backed by the cast of the original hit miniseries 77 Boadrum.” - Impose Magazine

SHARP BALLOONS (Memphis, TN) 4:00My favorite bands are the bands that are just start-ing out. Joe Simpson is an excellent guitar player but an excitingly amateur drummer. Zac Ives hacks at the guitar like few since the glory days of British DIY bands determined not to play like David Gilmour. Heather Simpson has been playing bass for about 6 months but has apparently just realized

that skill on the instrument is not a requirement for good songs or having fun. Covers of New Zealand heroes, and originals about TV weathermen, orange plates, and genetic disorders. Great. - Eric / Goner

RYAN ROUSSEAU & HIS DES-ERT CHILDREN (Tempe, AZ) 4:45Ryan has been a key part of a bunch of great bands (Wongs, Reatards, Tokyo Electron, Earthmen and Strang-ers, Destruction Unit, Digital Leather, etc). He lives in the Arizona desert where he plays guitar on skateboards, drinks beer on bicycles and sucks on the gila. - Zac / Goner STRAIGHT ARROWS (Sydney, AUS) 5:30Energetic Australians, a mix of punk rock drive and perfectly distorted rock and pop impulses.

AFTERNOON SHOW AT THE BUCCANEER1368 Monroe • $5 Beer Bust • Grill will be going with cheap eats at 2pm!

ICKY BOYFRIENDS (SF, CA) 12:00“The late 80’s/early 90’s San Fran-cisco ambassadors of primitive party music. The mere line ‘You keep on talking to me / just like the McLaugh-lin Group / you’re about as interest-ing as Campbell’s Soup’ still speaks volumes to me.” - WFMU

“There’s a fine, very permeable line between unlistenable and brilliant. Icky Boyfriends, a primitive, late-1980s/early 1990s noise rock trio

out of San Francisco, were both. They pulled it off in much the same way that the Shaggs and Half Japanese did -- not alternately, not hitting highs and lows, but by achieving both states simultaneously. It’s hard to tell whether bands like this are geniuses or idiots, but there is no possibility that they are mediocre.” - Splendid Magazine

GORIES (Detroit, MI) 1:00Like all of the best music, The Gories were hated in Detroit while they existed and treated as musical lepers. Alex Chilton saw them as doing for the Blues what The Cramps did for Rockabilly, and he produced them both. Featuring pre-Dirtbombs Mick Collins, pre-Demolition Doll Rods Dan-ny Kroha, and pre-Darkest Hours Peg Oneil. One of the most crucial of all modern bands, and although they’ve “progressed” since they began, they remain true to what they began with. The Gories rule. - Eric / Goner

AQUAFUZZ (Memphis, TN) 9:00Harlan T Bobo got married, had a kid. Instead of settling down, he’s chanelled his reckless, restless energy into this full-on ROCK outfit. Record-ings on Goner coming soon.

MIDNITE SNAXXX (SF, CA) 9:45With Tina Boom Boom Lucchessi, Renee Leal & Dulcinea Gonzales! “West coast all-star gal snack attack are bringing it rip-off/lipstick style with full on hooks and plenty of fuzz. Throw-back in the best way. Love it.” - Zac / Goner

JAMES ARTHUR’S MANHUNT (Desert, Texas) 10:30 Cactus-powered, strangely grounded spacey rock. Aggressive attack on the sky. - Eric / Goner

MEAN JEANS (Portland, OR) 11:15The Mean Jeans’ good time vibe will just steamroller anyone too cool to rock. Get down or get out of the way! - Eric / Goner

OUTSIDE STAGE

PITY FUCKS (Portland, OR) 2:00Mangled drunken garage party boogie with commendably loutish keyboards - Razorcake

REAL NUMBERS (Minneapolis, MN) 3:00 “These guys sound more like Televi-sion Personalitiess than the TVPs.” - Zac / Goner

TRUE SONS OF THUNDER (Memphis, TN) 4:00 “If Einsturzende Neubauten is the sound of buildings collapsing, we’re like the sound of the clamor at the town meeting between the local politi-cians and the concerned citizens argu-ing over having the derelict buildings torn down. On drugs.” - TSOT

MISSING MONUMENTS (New Orleans, LA) 5:00 “Back in the ring and bringing it clean! Swamp pop meets power-pop. On the outdoor stage because Louie DEMANDED it. He gets what he wants.” - Zac / Goner

REV JOHN WILKINS (Memphis, TN) 6:00The son of legendary bluesman Rob-ert Wilkins, John Wilkins played gui-tar for O.V. Wright in the 1960s and recorded for Style Wooten’s Designer Records in the 1970s before heed-ing the call to ministry in the 1980s. He became a pastor of the Hunter’s Chapel Church whose congregation included Othar Turner and Napolean Strickland and their families, and which had included the legendary Mississippi Fred Mcdowell in earlier times. The Reverend’s Gospel Blues will sound immediately familiar to those who love Fred McDowell, RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Deep, emotional, hypnotic guitar-based songs- not your suburban church’s organ jams! - Eric / GonerPresented by Big Legal Mess & The Folk Alliance

INSIDE STAGE

MANATEES (Memphis, TN) l:3O“Abe White’s melancholy trip through his walking nightmares. Songs about Abe’s cat: 2 Songs about puppies: 1 Songs about killing dudes and leaving their bodies in Wolf River: 1.” – Sambeaux

FOOTBALL (Chicago, IL) 2:30New outfit featuring Jimmy McCann (Baseball Furies, Tyrades, White Sav-age), Jered Gummere (The Ponys, White Savage, Guilty Pleasures), and Srini Radhakrishna (France Has The Bomb, Guilty Pleasures). Just having this collection of humans in one place guarantees a party. PARTY! - Eric / Goner

“These guys kept individual drink scorecards during SXSW - and at least two of them got to triple digits. They come to play.” - Zac / Goner

SHIRKS (Washington, DC) 3:30“Lead by Indiana trans-plant Al Budd (Prob-lematics/Rip Off Records), the Shirks are straight ahead punk rock that works. Nobody really pulls that off anymore - but listen to Negative Reaction off their last single... it’s just friggin great. Snotty

vocals and Thunderous riffs - you get the feeling the Shirks would rather punch you in the face than friend you on Facebook.” - Zac / Goner

OUTDOORSMEN (SF, CA) 4:30“No-frills garage punk, beauty in simplicity. No crazy, angsty vocals, no weedling guitars, and no goddamn hipster pop-rock bullshit. The songs clock in right around two minutes and the drums, guitar, bass, and vocals all kind of do the same thing at the same time. In a certain great way, the Outdoorsmen nail the mid-’90s garage sound without coming off like some craphole revival act trying to walk in some other band’s footsteps.” - Maxi-mum Rocknroll

KITCHEN’S FLOOR (Brisbane, Australia) 5:30 “Kitchen’s Floor continue to carve out dank and mould-ridden outsider pop with a raw, primitive temperament… vague melodic hooks break the surface, but an undertow of alcohol induced lethargy keeps them plas-tered into the ground.”- Lee Parker, Two Thousand

SATURBLACK SUNDAY (Memphis, TN) 9:00Alicja Trout’s other other band... An impromptu reunion show over the holidays was a jaw-dropper - we had to talk Alicja and the guys into an encore for the festival. - Zac / Goner

BRIDES (Chicago, IL) 9:45“The first punk band in the 90s I heard who wanted to be the Pagans and who sounded as good as the Pa-gans. Perfect mix of bad attitude and great songs. -Eric / Goner

DEAF WISH (Melbourne, Australia)“Deaf Wish began in a soggy West Melbourne rehearsal room in May 2007, standing around screaming and bashing through songs with one solid philosophy: ‘go to feedback’ when things fall apart. While they are often compared to US bands like the Wip-ers, Husker Du and Red Kross; Aus-tralian bands such as X and Venom P Stinger; it is an unarguably and distinctly Melbourne suburban sound that Deaf Wish have made their own.” - The Siren Sound

SHANNON & THE CLAMS (SF, CA) 11:15Shannon & The Clams are, along

with Hunx & His Punx (also featuring Shannon Shaw), the greatest 50s-pop influenced bands going right now. The Clams 50s influences are mixed with large doses of girl group melodrama, garage rock energy, and individual weirdness. The songwriting is abso-

lutely top notch. Their live show is heartstopping and throat-shredding. - Eric / Goner

ALARM CLOCKS (Cleveland, OH) 12:00“The Alarm Clocks “No Reason To Complain” is one of Goner’s top 60s garage singles - as featured on Back From The Grave Volume 1- and just to be able to see the band that made this perfect slice of raw American rock n roll in 2011 is basically unimaginable. The fact that the Alarm Clocks circa now crank out insane, uncompromis-ing, and tough Midwest garage punk is flat out impossible.” - Eric / Goner

HUMAN EYE (Detroit, MI) 1:00“Like a flying saucer crash landing on your head.” - Zac / Goner “With Human Eye, frontman Timmy “Vulgar” Lampinen takes the raw punk spirit he brought to his earlier Detroit bands (Clone Defects & Epi-leptix) and steps into new dimensions that reflect reality through science fic-tion.” - Free Music Archive via WFMU

Unlikely, but great. - Eric / Goner

SUN STUDIO 706 Union Ave (901) 521-0664One amazing room. One amazing man. Sam Phillips changed the world. Ike Turner, Howlin Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Little Milton, Roy Orbison, and tons more. Unreal.

STAX MUSEUM 926 E McLemore Ave (901) 942-7685Rebuilt from languishing as a vacant lot for years, now there’s a music school

on one side and a Smithsonian-quality museum on the other. If you can come out of this tour without wanting to wear Rufus Thomas’ knee-high green boots I don’t want to know you. The hall of records will bring most Goner-fest visitors to their knees. Check out Isaac Hayes’ gold Cadillac! Wow!

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER The Mississippi is the whole reason Memphis exists. It’s huge. It’s awesome. There are barges. Don’t miss it. But don’t try to swim it!

PEABODY DUCKS Peabody Hotel Union & 2nd StSure, go ahead and be a tourist. A tux-edoed Duck Master leads the ducks into a fountain in the middle of the Peabody Hotel lobby at 11am each morning and back up to their penthouse digs at 5pm. Ridiculous? Yeah! Gorgeous hotel lobby & bar. Pricey, but the ducks are free!

NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM 450 Mulberry Street (901) 521-9699 A tribute to the Civil Rights Movement

at the motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.

GRACELAND 3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard (901) 332-3322Elvis is king. His house is a perfect 1970s time capsule. Kinda pricey, but, if you’re in the right mood, cool, and all your friends will ask you if you went there, so you might as well go. Hall of jumpsuits & other costumes is great! Jungle Room rules. We keep getting

older, Graceland stays the same age. For more hilarity, find Graceland, Too in Holly Springs, MS! Paul McLeod is a #1 Elvis fan. Graceland Too 200 E. Gholson Ave., Holly Springs, MS;

GIBSON GUITAR FACTORY 145 Lt Geo W Lee (901) 544-7998Quite a few Memphis musicians making SGs, Les Pauls, and other Gibson models in this downtown factory. A must for guitar nuts!

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN MEMPHIS - Besides Gonerfest!

A current listing of events can be found in both the weekly Memphis Flyer or in the Playbook section of the Commercial Appeal daily paper, and also at the online versions of both those papers.

DRINKING & NIGHTCLUBS

LAMPLIGHTER 1702 Madison (901) 726-9916Our favorite beer joint ever. You can BYOBooze if you pay for set-ups. The best burger in Memphis? Chuck and Beth have been putting on small shows here as well. You can always find out what else is going on by stop-ping in here.

BUCCANEER 1368 Monroe (901) 278-0909The site of the first Gonerfest, and our favorite Pirate-themed venue in the city. Great bartenders, great atmo-sphere. Cozy!

MURPHY’S 1589 Madison (901) 726-4193Across the street from what used to be the Well and Antenna Club, Murphy’s supplied the hard alcohol to the rockers punking it up across the street. They saved the Antenna sign & have taken up a large chunk of the punk rock shows that might have gone to the Antenna back in the day.

NEXT DOOR 937 South Cooper (901) 278-0278Swank little bar down the street from Goner, cozy with tons of tvs for sports-watchin’. Gonerfest discount!

POPLAR LOUNGE 2586 Poplar (901) 324-6550Revitalized bar since Jameson (ex-Puffy Areolas!) started booking it in the past year or so… “Where The Stars Hang Out.” Beer only.

WILD BILL’S 1580 Vollentine (901) 726-5473Jook joint w/ quarts & live r&b /blues in Midtown. Wild Bill passed away a few years back, but the jookin goes on. From 10 til late, Thursday through Sunday, $10 cover.

THE COVE 2559 Broad (901) 730-0719Small joint that took all the nautical décor from the late, great Anderton’s seafood place and crammed in into a spot 1/4 the size. Oysters and cock-tails. Live music on occasion.

THE BEAUTY SHOP 966 South Cooper Street (901) 272-7111

Around the corner from Goner on Cooper. Serves elegant & impres-sive concoctions. Also a restaurant and next door at Do, a noodle shop. Convenient!

MUSIC STORES

MARTIN MUSIC 1659 Poplar Avenue, (901) 729-2466The closest place to get strings and picks to the Midtown clubs- they’ve also got fancy guitars, fancy amps, and fancy custom guitar pedals.

MEMPHIS DRUM SHOP1878 South Cooper (901) 276-2328 Drummers should not miss the Drum Shop, right around the corner from Goner. The best drum shop for hun-dreds of miles. Tell ‘em GONERFEST sent ya!

PAYNE’S BBQ 1762 Lamar (901) 272-1523Our favorite chopped shoulder sandwich. Smoked Sausage, too! No booze. Housed in a converted old garage. Cool! Open for lunch un-til sundown. Closed Mondays. They sell their sauce! Ask!

GUS’ FRIED CHICKEN310 S Front (901) 527-4877World famous fried chicken with a spicy, chunky crust, served with a quart of beer… YES! Frying Chicken can take a while so don’t be in a rush. Sides taste like they came straight from the can, unfortunately. Stick with the meat!

UNCLE LOU’S FRIED CHICKEN3633 Millbranch Rd (901) 332-2367 Fantastic chicken wings like no other. Out by the airport- get some to go as you’re leav-ing town? You will be the envy of the entire airport.

COZY CORNER745 N Parkway (901) 527-9158Famous for their Cornish game hens, which I’ve never tried ‘cause it would mean missing out on eating more RIBS! Saucy. Great. Best in Memphis, say us. Frequent Jerry “The King” Lawler sightings! RIBS!

KWIK CHEK2013 Madison (901) 274-9293Employers of many rockers through the years. Cheap delicious sandwiches. Muffaletta, pork roast, and vegetarian Bloody Valentine are good starting points. Korean dishes as well.

FINO’S1859 Madison (901) 272- 3466Small Italian deli right in the middle of Mid-town. Excellent sandwiches.

BARBECUE SHOP1782 Madison (901) 272-1277Solid and spicy Midtown barbecue that stays open later than most and serves beer.

SOUL FISH 862 S Cooper (901) 725-0722Delicious sandwiches & platters of chicken & catfish. Low-key, but crowded most dinner-times. Cuban and Memphis sandwiches are fantastic.

LOU’S PIZZA PIE 2158 Young Avenue (901) 722-4031Neighbors to our east, with tasty sun-dried tomato & pesto pizzas. Pepperoni and more basic toppings, too.

EATING Eating is a big deal in Memphis. Barbecue and soul food (fried chicken, pork chops, etc) have been honed to a fine science. Plus it’s cheap! Here are a few of our favorite places & others of note. Be sure to tell ‘em you’re here for Gonerfest!

TROLLEY STOP704 Madison Avenue (901) 526-1361Delicious pizzas, and sandwiches in a mini-farmer’s market-. FRESH! In between Midtown & Downtown, not far from Hotel Gen X or the Super 8 Motel.

RADIOIf by some chance you are driving around and your truck’s cassette player is broken, you might want to taste some local Memphis talk radio. Here’s some stations for ya:

AM730 3-6 pm Chris Vernon Show – loud, funny local sports talk radio that is also the only radio station to have local music on, live! Loves Goner!

AM 1070 WDIA Venerable and vener-ated Black radio, good slowjams and solid talk in the mornings with Bev Johnson and Bobby O Jay

AM 1180 WPLX Local rabble-rouser Thaddeus Matthews’ incredible station plays raunchy Blues / R&B all day and has the most insane local talk radio I’ve ever heard. Espe-cially in the mornings. Sworn enemy of WDIA, with hilarious ads flaunting their competition. Check it out.
