COMMODORE ROBERT STOCKTON —AUG. 14 PROGRAM
Robert F. Stockton at-tended the College of New Jersey (now Prince-ton) and joined the Navy at age 16, as a midship-man. In time, he was nicknamed ”fighting Bob” when assigned to chasing pirates on the Barbary Coast. Later he helped design and captained the first Navy steam ship, the USS Princeton, famous, for its giant naval gun, called the “Peace Maker”. Following several other naval assignments, Com-modore Stockton came to Southern California after Commodore Sloat had taken Northern California for the United States. It was here that he met Charles Weber in Los An-
geles, and the rest is left to history… which will be discussed in some detail by Bart Bird, talented native Stocktonian, history buff, and business owner of Pre-Peeled Products, Inc., who will portray “Commodore Robert F. Stockton” at the Manteca Museum on Program Night, Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 7 to 8pm. Everyone is welcome! Admission is free for Historical Society Mem-bers and other inter-ested Guests! Bever-ages and treats are served following the program.

The Story of Janis Music

News Briefs
From Clancy Rogers, Manager As we all know California is facing
serious drought conditions for this
year, and years to come. As I was thinking about
this drought, it brought to mind a poem that I re-
membered from quite a few years ago. The poem
was written by Wendell Berry and it still reflects
what’s happening today. The poem is entitled
Water.
I was born in a drought year. That summer my
mother waited in the house, enclosed in the
sun and the dry-ceaseless wind,
for men to come back in the evenings
bringing water from a distant spring.
Veins of leaves ran dry, roots shrank,
and all my life I have dreaded the return
of that year, sure that it still is somewhere,
like a dead enemy’s soul.
Fear of dust in my mouth is always with me,
And I am the faithful husband of the rain.
I love the water of wells and springs and the
taste of roofs in the water of cisterns.
I am a dry man whose thirst is praise of clouds,
and whose mind is something of a cup.
My sweetness is to wake in the night
after days of dry heat, hearing the rain.
George, Inda and Randy Janis, and two Janis Music
musicians entertained a good crowd at Program
Night July 10th. We learned about their family his-
tory in our area and heard a couple of tunes, in-
cluding ‘Misty’. Past president, Leon Sucht pre-
sented the family with a museum plaque honoring
their 50+ years as a Manteca business.

WE WANT
YOU!
AS A MUSEUM
VOLUNTEER!
Fellow Historical Society
Members, our volunteer
staff is in need of more
help! We need docent
and other positions filled,
so why not join us!
Everyone is qualified to
be a docent! All it takes
is your willingness to
work one or more after-
noon(s) a month to open
the Museum, greet
guests and learn about
the Museum as you go!
Have some fun exploring
the Museum yourself,
and simply point out a
few interesting areas to
visitors! You do not need
to be a Manteca native.
Just have an interest in
history! History is all
about telling a story and
handing it down to the
next generation. Our
Historical Society and Mu-
seum is here for future gen-
erations to know about the
community’s past and peo-
ple.
Please make a decision to
step-up and help out. Ages
18 to 80+ are welcome to
volunteer. We have shifts
available on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 1:00-
3:00pm, and Thursdays and
Sundays from 1:00-4:00pm.
We always have at least two
docents on duty for each
shift. Call Jeanie Marsden
for more info, or to sign up!

Our Manteca Historical Society lost two great friends
and volunteers recently. Victor Gully, MHS class of
1953 and Claudia Ann Cotta -Machado, MHS class of
1965, will forever be locked in our fond memories.
Among their many other community efforts, respec-
tively, the two of these folks were very much involved
in the preservation of Manteca’s history. Victor was
for years, our Tuesday-Crew boss, responsible for
most of the Museum’s maintenance program. Clau-
dia volunteered as a Docent and volunteer for special
events, and also headed up our Memorials program.
Their kind gestures and support will truly be missed by
all.
Our Museum board, docents, and fellow volunteers
offer our heartfelt condolences to their families.

play at the Museum. Printed form-envelopes are
