bracket/corbel/console: a projection from the face of a wall,

especially one used to support a cornice

or other architectural element.

The decorated ends of beams are probably theoriginal models for the console. Early examples of this element can be found in the architectureof Indian, Chinese and Assyrian origins. The S-shaped double volute, with a large and a smallspiral, is the standard form. When it is used as abalcony support, or as a modillion supportingthe corona of a cornice, it is recumbent; whensupporting the cornices of windows and doors, its attitude is erect. Volute consoles are foundonly sporadically in the Greek style, and it wasreally the Romans who were the first to makeextensive use of this form.

During the Romanesque period (11th-13th century),coarse copies of Greek and Roman exampleswere adopted, along with newly invented stylesmore in keeping with the heavily arched andornamented architecture of the time. It is at thispoint that we find the modillion, an ornamentalblock or horizontal bracket that was used to

support the upper projection of the cornice, inaddition to being found in the corners of doorsbetween the jamb and the lintel.

The Renaissance reworked the Doric, Ionic andCorinthian capitals for their own use; theBaroque added the triglyph as a viable motif. The Rococo corbel sported shell shapes andunsymmetrical scrolls.

Contemporary designs have essentially not addedanything new to the corbel except for the idea thatit can be used for simple display, and not just forthe ornamental support of architectural members.

Classic Mouldings’ collection of corbels range fromregulation Roman right through to minimalist, making stops at Rococo, Empire and the BelleÉpoque on the way. Our corbels may be used in aclassical manner, or placed in unorthodox positionsto striking effect.

Corbels / Brackets

Corbels should be applied to wall and ceiling surfacesusing Durabond 90™, or an equivalent plaster glue.Corbels may be pre-drilled in order to sink a screw into the piece. This secures it to the wall during the drying period. The screw head may then be covered neatly with additional plaster compound. Corbels will not

structurally support weight-bearing loads, including shelving. When the corbel is being poured, a metal “L”bracket may be added by special order. This will providesupport for shelving. Brackets supporting glass should befilled and finished on top. This is a special order.

casings: a framework, as about a door or window.

Casings may be architectural (unfigured), reeded,or may have motifs such as the guilloche, lamb’stongue, egg and dart, or pearls. Casings may finish in decorative corner blocks at the top, and plinth blocks at the baseboard. There arestraight casings, or casings that are stepped (or“eared”), and held by a keystone centred at thetop of the doorway.

overdoor: header placed over a door or over an opening of

a passage, based originally on an interpretation of

the classical entablature with an architrave, frieze

and cornice; a decorated lintel extending from one

pilaster to another, bridging the head of an opening.

Overdoors offer architectural emphasis forentrances to principal rooms. An overdoor maybe as simple as an architectural cornice with areturn to the wall, or be elaborated into a brokenpediment framing an urn. It may be used in con-junction with pilasters or brackets, and may beconstructed to accommodate a figured frieze, atransom light or a painting. An overdoor sits ontop of the door casing like an elegant crown.

chair rail: a wall moulding that tops the dado and prevents

chairs pushed against the wall from damaging the

surface; also called a dado rail.

As Roman interpretation of the Classical Ordersslowly seeped into the far corners of the Empire, the classical column was used as a distillation ofperfect proportion, and was echoed in everyaspect of architecture and decoration. The top of

the column plinth became a chair rail by theearly 1600s, and was used to cap the panelingthat made up the dado — with the dado itselfmeant to represent the body of the plinth.
