It is a community surrounded by orchards, wheat fields and vineyards, set against the beautiful Blue Mountains. From the first settlers who flocked to this area to take advantage of the fertile soil to today, being part of the acclaimed Walla Walla Valley wine appellation, you can enjoy the agricultural bounty offered by this unique terroir. “The region surrounding Milton-Freewater features diverse soils that form the basis for a number of distinctive terroirs. Valley floor vineyards have silty and sandy soils derived from the ice age Missoula floods, which repeatedly inundated the area. In the region known as “the rocks”, the flood sediments were washed away by the Walla Walla River and replaced by a thick layer of basalt cobblestones. Vineyards above the valley floor are planted in rolling hills covered with thick wind-deposited silt and on steep slopes with soils composed of a mixture of silt and fractured basalt bedrock.” Kevin Pogue, Ph.D. Stuctural Geology Whitman College savor MIlTOn FReeWaTeR agri-Tourism Map vineyards orchards farms wineries farm stands gourmet b & b’s gifts more... we grow it you savor it Milton Freewater agri-Tourism 541-203-0220 [email protected] miltonfreewatertravel.wordpress.com For further information on local agricultural events, tune in to 107.7 FM The Vine Many thanks to the City of Milton-Freewater and Umatilla County
