A word from Pope Francis ~ “Whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms.”

The Third Sunday of Advent – already! During the first part of Advent, our Sunday and daily Scripture readings have shown us how Jesus fulfilled Israel’s longings by his compassionate ministry. Gaudete Sunday Gaudete Sunday Gaudete Sunday --- Third Sunday of AdventThird Sunday of AdventThird Sunday of Advent

Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived

at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over

and they are close to Christmas.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!

Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near.

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God.

Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Stewardship in today’s Scripture… A day in Advent to focus on the JOY of what we await almost seems too good to be true, especially when we look around at the dire circumstances we face in our world at present. But by faith we know this day is com-ing. Lest we grow weary as we await the glorious day of Christ’s return, St. James, in our second reading, offers wise counsel. “Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord… Make your hearts firm… Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged.” This is excellent advice for us Christian stewards as we face the challenges of everyday life in our broken world, especially in the hectic days that precede Christ-mas, when stress can make us and those around us less than our best selves. St. James reminds us that we can choose our response to both the great strains and the minor annoyances of life. In other words, we can be good stewards of our atti-tude, “making our hearts firm” by practicing patience with others and refusing to give in to the temptation to complain. We can choose to see and rejoice in God’s presence with us, no matter the circumstances surrounding us.

member, close friend or even pet, changes due to a separation or divorce, or the loss of old rituals like everyone “coming home” or being present (including those currently serving in the military), are all intensified during the holidays.

One of the most common difficulties with grief is that we often expect ourselves or others to recover quickly following a loss. The common pattern seems to be that it takes a minimum of one full year before we can even begin to return to what we might consider “normal life.” In regular, everyday circumstances, the holidays can be emotionally and physically draining. But for those who have

experienced a significant loss of one kind or another, the holidays are very vulnerable times. Nothing feels the same. What used to be anticipated with much joy is now dreaded. Memories are triggered by the simplest things – a special Christmas carol, the smell of holiday foods or a family recipe (like mom’s ravioli or lasagna), or a cherished Christmas ornament – just to name a few. Sometimes it might be years after we have experienced a loss when something familiar takes us back to our time of grief. It is as if a dark cloud suddenly descends upon us in the midst of a joyful celebration. We find ourselves wondering, “What is wrong with me?” The honest answer is

“nothing!” Grief works that way. If we have experienced a significant

loss in the past few years, we need to be patient with ourselves and with the pace at which we grieve. Talking with someone we trust about what we are feeling can be helpful. Being flexible with past traditions is also very important. Traditions may need to be changed. In the year following my dad’s death, we put the Christmas tree in a different spot in the house. Things aren’t the same as they used to be and feeling the need to recreate the past is often not very helpful. New traditions may actually be just what we need.

Those of us who have not experienced a significant loss in the past

few years need to be attentive to those among us who have. One of the best gifts we can give to those who are grieving is permission to talk about what they are feeling. Tell them you want to hear the old stories again and to keep the memory alive rather than pretend that nothing has changed. Space in which to grieve can be a priceless gift. I hope that these thoughts are helpful. Whether we have experienced a recent loss, or are with someone who has, it is important to be attentive to our own needs and those among us.

Advent is one of those ideal times to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our regular times for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are on Saturdays, following the 8:15am Mass (8:45 until 10:00am). We have added additional Reconciliation times on the Fridays of Advent following the 12:05pm Mass (12:35-1:30pm). Additional reconciliation times have been scheduled for the week before Christmas. Our parish Advent Reconciliation Service will take place

this Monday evening at 7:00pm. Additional priests will be available as confessors at this service. Please note these additional times to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Christmas.

Last week we inserted copies of the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2019 Closing Report. It contained projected results for the year ending December 31, 2019. Our parish goal for the 2019 CMAA is $180,100. The sad news in the closing report is that we are projected to fall short of our goal by 3%, with our projected actual paid total of $175,457. The weekly report we received last Monday indicated that our actual paid pledges totaled $165.698. The good news is that we have surpassed our 2019 CMAA goal in pledges by a little over $4,000. Thank you to those who have already fulfilled their pledges to this year’s Appeal. If you have a balance due to your 2019 Appeal pledge, please do all that you can to fulfill that pledge before the end of the year. If you have not yet made a pledge to the Appeal, now is an

The Definition of Advent The word “advent” (the arrival of an important person or thing) is derived from the Latin word

“adventus,” which means “coming.” For Catholics, Advent is the four-week season leading up to Christmas. During Advent we anticipate the coming of Jesus. It’s a time full of reflection, excitement, and hope.

The Meaning of Advent Advent, at its heart, is about getting ready to encounter Jesus at Christmas. Opening our

hearts to him. Getting to know him. Becoming a better husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, friend, etc.

Typically, we associate Advent with Jesus’ birth two thousand years ago. We also reflect on Jesus’ promise to return at the end of time. When he comes, he wants to bring us back to heaven with him.

The Advent season is about getting ready for his coming by reflecting on what’s important and how to become the-best-version-of-ourselves.

With the busyness of the holiday season, it’s easy to get distracted by the shopping, decora-tions, and endless to-do lists. Advent is a time for us to take a step back, slow down, and focus on what’s really important in life.

The Meaning of Advent Candles As a Christian tradition, the wreath holds the four Advent candles. The candles represent

Jesus coming as the light in darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit, and sometimes a fifth candle is lit on Christmas. As Christmas draws nearer, each candle brings a little more light into the darkness. Each of the candles represents an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent:

The Candle of Hope - Color: Purple Purple is the primary color associated with Advent. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent, we look forward to Jesus’ coming with hope.

The Candle of Peace - Color: Purple During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-versions-of-ourselves in preparation for Jesus’ coming.

The Candle of Joy - Color: Pink This third candle is pink, symbolizing anticipation and rejoicing. During the third week of Advent, we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day.

The Candle of Love - Color: Purple During this final week of Advent we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16-17

What is an Advent wreath? During Advent and Christmas, festively decorated evergreen wreaths hang in windows and on

doors everywhere. In many homes and churches, it’s also common to see special wreaths lying on tables or ledges, adorned with 4 candles (usually 3 purple and 1 pink). This familiar symbol of the season is the Advent wreath.

Traditionally, the Advent wreath is a circle of evergreen branches. Both the evergreen branches and the circular shape symbolize the passing of time and eternal life. The shape of the wreath, with no beginning or end, reflects the complete and endless love that Jesus has for us. During the Advent season, we anticipate his coming and the promise of eternal life in heaven with him.

Third Sunday of Advent Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10. Psalm 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10. James 5:7-10. Matthew 11:2-11.

Who Is the Messiah? When even the land sings God’s praise, how can we not do the same? When God comes for the blind, deaf, lame, and mute, how can we not care for the same? When we know Christ has both come and is coming yet again, how can we complain about anyone?

How will the words I speak be filled with what God is up to in this world?

How will the deeds I do attend to mercy work for blind, deaf, lame, and mute children of God?

I will stop complaining this week about ______________________?

December 17 . O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge!

December 18. O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to res-cue us with your mighty power!

December 19. O Root of Jesse’s stem, sigh of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay!

December 20. O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness!

December 21. O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.

December 22. O King of all nations and key-stone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

December 23. O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God!

-Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers, usscb.org

What are the O Antiphons? What are the O Antiphons? What are the O Antiphons? The O Antiphons refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat dur-ing Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Oc-tave before Christmas, Dec. 17-23, with Dec. 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that evening being for the Christmas Vigil. -Fr. William Saunders CathlicEducation.org

The Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least

the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany

the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23.

They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery

drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the

coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but

present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!"

embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

excellent time to join the 922 households of our parish who have made a commitment. I hope we can succeed in meeting our responsibilities to the larger diocesan church.

The celebrations of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th were very moving celebrations. Next up is the Simbang Gabi Filipino celebration this Friday night. We will gather for Mass at 7:00pm and continue the celebration in the Ministry Center. All

of our non-Filipino parishioners are welcome.

Many of our college students have already made their way home for their Christmas break. Congratulations on a successful completion of your Fall semester. We are very happy to have you home with us!

These are busy days ahead of us as we continue our preparations. They can also be beautiful days as the anticipation level rises in our young and young-at-

heart people. God can be found in both the activity and in the quiet. I pray that we will be able to recognize God’s presence among us in each moment. May God continue to bless us with all that we need, and more.
