Interestingly Meiyappan brought out a ‘Drama Set’ of ‘NaamIruvar’ under the ‘Columbia’ label and marketed it through hisSaraswathi Stores. The set consisted of six 78-rpm recordswith important and essential sequences and songs of themovie. It sold well in those days and today the set is a collector’sitem.

Besides its box-office success, ‘Naam Iruvar’ ushered in anew era in the phenomenal growth of the Bharathanatyamdance art form in India and abroad with ‘Kumari Kamala’becoming an icon and cult figure. Moreover, it set a welcometrend of making movies with a contemporary story, setting andmilieu, thus giving Tamil Cinema a new direction away from theclichéd beaten track of mythological, folk-myths, folk tales andall. That was the signal and significant achievement of ‘NaamIruvar’. All credit to Meiyappan. The movie made history inmany ways and is fondly remembered today after half centuryand more.

When movies began to talk Tamil in 1931, only mythologicalsand folk tales were made. No stories based on contemporarythemes known as ‘socials’ in were attempted until 1935. Duringthis year, two social-movies were made and one of them was‘Dambachari’.

It came in the wake of the stunning success of ‘BhamaVijayam’ (1934), and was made by the same producers ChellamTalkies and directed by M. L. Tandon. It was based on a verypopular stage play about a married man being caught in theweb of a professional dancing girl or devadasi, which leads to hisutter ruin and the destruction of his family. A familiar themeof that period, it is believed to have been based on the life of arich man who went down the hill in a similar manner. His wifewas an epitome of female chastity. Indeed the play had asubtitle, ‘Utthama Manaivi’ (it means in Tamil ‘a good or noblewife’). The vamp was named ‘Madanavalli’ and this characterbecame so famous that many girl children born in the Devadasicommunity during that period were named ‘Madanavalli’!

During the early decades of the 20th century, there was alegendary stage star and actress named Balamani Ammalwith her own drama troupe and ‘Dambachari’ was one of herbiggest hits. Her drama troupe consisted mainly of women whoplayed male roles. Indeed this lady played alternately the heroand heroine in the play with stunning success. In those daysthere was a local train plying between Kumbakonam andThanjavur to enable people attending the play to get back totheir homes after the show in towns and villages on the way. This train was known as ‘Balamani Special’! Saris and manyother things used by women were named after Balamani!

There was one man in this troupe working as manager andas comedian, C. S. Sama Iyer. He played as many as elevenroles in the play, each with a different make-up, costume andget-up. For each character from a different stratum of society,he spoke in a different language such as Tamil, Telugu, English,Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and more. With different accentstoo. Those were the days when make-up and make-up mate-rials were highly primitive. Despite this, he was a roaringsuccess and contributed in great measure to the popularity ofthe play. Not many are aware that the then Governor ofMadras, Lord Willingdon, bestowed on him the title ‘CharlieChaplin of India’!

‘Dambachari’ was made in 1935 with M. R. Krishnamurthyas hero and P. S. Ratna Bai and her buxom sister SaraswathiBai as the wife and temptress respectively. However, the filmversion was not much of a success as expected for more thanone reason. Moviegoers of the day did not take kindly toKrishnamurthy and the Bai Sisters in contemporary roles. They had become typecast in the roles of gods.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Muthalamman Koil Street (West Mambalam) is misused forparking by 2-wheelers, 4-wheelers, heavy commercial vehicles andalso roadside fruit and vegetable vendors.

This street comes under the jurisdiction of R3, Ashok Nagar PoliceStation. We have requested the traffic officials a number of times totake action but to no avail.

In case of medical emergencies, an ambulance cannot enter ourstreet. During water scarcity days, it was a big struggle for theMetrowater tankers to provide water to the residents.

We have also lodged a complaint to the Chief Minister’s Cell onlineand the complaint number is 2013/741980/AB.

I hope the authorities will wake up and make the street a ‘no parking’zone. – Residents Association, Muthalamman Koil Street, WestMambalam
