I read somewhere that, “a negative mind will not give you a positive life.” We live amidst of the beautiful creation of God. We human beings are the beautiful and wonderful creation of God. We see a flux in nature. For the past few months, the trees looked dry, no color, no beautiful birds and their melody. Now we are into the Spring season. There is new life on trees and in nature. The new life filled- trees have beautiful leaves and flowering buds. We now enjoy the melody of the bird’s early in the morning. Once withered trees are now full of life. Nature itself shows us the way to be positive amidst of difficult times. Being positive should be our attitude and our motivation in the journey of life. The negative thinking pattern will disturb and stress out our hearts and minds. It will reflect in the reality of life. We have the tendency always to look the negative aspects and brood over it. Even amidst of the negative situation there is a ray of hope, there is a positive aspect.
We have the good example of Job in the Bible, who amidst of suffering and loss sees everything with a positive mind and heart. Though his wife keeps on telling to abuse and deny God with words, but he would not. His patience and his positive attitude filled his life with all that he needed. Every event, for good or ill, has within it the power to call forth from us a deeper response to God and to one another. This is our faith, too. It is the faith of the Easter people; a people who recognize that Good Friday contains the seeds that bloom on Easter Sunday.
We are in the Marian Month, the month of May, a good time to seek the assistance of our beloved mother. Our Lady had a positive attitude in all the circumstances of her life. From annunciation to as-cension she was the positive co-operator to the plan of God. She did not give into negativity. Joseph, the husband of Mary, also had a positive attitude about God’s interventions. He accepted responsibility as foster father of Jesus to care for his family in and through the difficult times. It was possible with a positive attitude. It was possible with a total surrender of once life to God. As the Holy Family, they surrendered completely to God’s will with a positive spirit.
As we live in difficult times of Covid-19, many thoughts may come to haunt us and disturb us. We should not give into this negative thinking which will drain our spirit and our enthusiasm. It is our choice to choose what is beneficial to our life. Therefore, let us be positive in and through these difficult times. We read in 1 Samuel 3:3 says, “The Lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was.” God’s constant accompaniment is with us despite this difficult situation. Let us keep burning the lamp of Positive spirit to lead a happy life.
Be Positive. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy.
Yours in the Lord,
Fr. Anil Polumari

Reflecting on the Scriptures Peter and John went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. --- Acts 8
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. --- John 14
Our first sense of being loved and cared for comes from parents. We are held, cuddled, bathed, fed, bounced,
and changed--- through loving hands. Little ones are aware of the sound of parents’ voices, and can panic if they
turn around, and the parent is out of sight. Children who live in orphanages lack this loving connection. A feeling
of abandonment, feeling unloved, and unaccepted sets in.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus promises, “I will not leave you orphans.” Jesus has been preparing his disciples for his
leaving. No doubt they were confused, concerned, and trying to make sense of Jesus’ words. When Jesus first
called them, each left behind family and work to follow Him. So hearing that Jesus was leaving certainly produced
uncertainty and fear. How could Jesus possibly say, “I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer
see me, but you will see me”?
The Holy Spirit is the way Jesus carries out that promise. His life on earth was about three years of public
ministry. Jesus tells us the Advocate will be with us and that the Holy Spirit will speak for us. The Holy Spirit is an
encourager in our lives---advocating, calling us together, and supporting us. When we simply don’t have the
words to pray, we hear in Romans 8:26-27 that when we don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit will pray for us in
sighs and groans too deep for words.
In his farewell address to his disciples, Jesus weans them off of their dependence upon his constant physical
presence for connectedness to God. The Jesus who walked alongside them will become the Christ within. Jesus
will send His Spirit to them when He ascends into Heaven. Their fellowship with him will not be broken, but taken
to a deeper dimension. They need only to continue to show their love for him by living lives of love, which is what
he had commanded them to do.
The Holy Spirit is, simply, Jesus’ presence in our daily lives right now. Pope Francis reminds us that "The Holy
Spirit, as Jesus said, will teach us everything" and "is the living presence of God in the Church.” It’s when we call
out to the Holy Spirit with our deepest groans and cries that we will realize we have had that strength, wisdom and
love in our hearts all along. If we are seeking answers, and we take time, space, and silence in our lives to listen
to how or where the Holy Spirit is answering/leading, we will receive the direction we are seeking.
The mission of Jesus continues today in the lives of his disciples: you and me. As Jesus’ disciples, we have
received the Holy Spirit within, and so we continue to bring others to Jesus, to love. The ministry of Christ spreads
out in wider and wider ripples as we respond to the Holy Spirit who has made His home in me---and you.

Bottles for Bella
Each year, St. Raphael Parish gives out baby bottles on Mother’s Day, and asks people to return them on Father’s Day filled with donations for Bella Medical Clinic. These donations from our parish are a significant source on revenue for Bella, the pro-life help center in Oshkosh.
Due to COVID, we cannot give out bottles this year. However, we can still help Bella. Please find a jar or bowl or bottle at home and start collecting your donations. Then, on Father’s Day (or some other time), please send a check to Bella Medical Center with your donation, or give online at Bella’s website. If you prefer, you may send the check to St. Raphael, and we will forward it.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Usually when we think of commandments we think of the Ten Commandments, but those commandments are found in the Old Testament. Jesus’ commandments to his disciples (and that includes us!) don’t tell us what not to do; Jesus’ commandments tell us what we are to do – to love God above all and our neighbor as ourselves. And if we truly love Jesus we will want to keep His com-mandments, right?
But then Jesus tells us that He is in His Father, and we are in Him, and He is in us. Does that mean that Jesus is in everyone? Even in that woman who refuses to wear a face mask in Costco? How should I handle that? Should I stop her in the store aisle, explain the problem, and try to reason with her? Or should I just grab her cart and threaten to call store security if she doesn’t put a mask on immediately? After all, I don’t want to catch this virus and I have to love myself, too, right? But letting my anger get out of control is only going to put more stress on my body. And making myself sick is doing violence to myself, not loving myself.
This kind of loving is complicated! Maybe that’s why Jesus promised to send help. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you…” Maybe, before my fellow shopper and I decide to slug it out, I should take a minute to pray to the Holy Spirit for help in managing my anger. After all, managing one’s anger doesn’t have to mean backing down (think of Jesus facing the moneychangers in the Temple). On the contrary, it can be a very positive step toward loving God above all and loving my neighbor as myself.
“Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” Jesus promised not to leave us orphans. That’s how much He loves us. Just ask - he’ll be standing right there next to you in the aisle at Costco…
