More than 200 families in Kodambakkam affectedby metro rail project

Sir, Under the Land Acquisition Act, Tamilnadu Government hasissued notices to a number of property owners on the eastern side ofKodambakkam Railway Station in connection with the developmentof the 2nd phase of the Metro Rail project in the 17.4-km long Corridor4 (Orange Line) from Light House to CMBT with 20 stations.

There will be 6 stations in the neighbourhood, namely Nandanam,Natesan Park, Panagal Park, Kodambakkam, Meenakshi College andPower House.

When the project was announced some five years back, the stretchbetween Vadapalani and Nandanam was to be underground.

As per the drawings available, acquisition will be in the 9 streets fromKodambakkam Station on the eastern side up to Ramakrishna School(Mambalam High Road). There are around 10 apartment complexesin these streets.

Nearly two hundred property owners (primarily from middle andlower middle class), many of whom are senior citizens living here forover 50 years, may have to give up their dwellings.

It was also learnt that Chennai Metro Rail Limited has changed therouting several times between Vadapalani and Panagal Park, and, asper the latest proposal, our area will be affected. It is not known if theeducational institutions and hospitals falling within this corridor willalso be affected.

Moreover, the distance between the proposed Kodambakkam MetroStation and the Kodambakkam Suburban Station is hardly 30 meters.Setting up another station within such a short distance in unnecessaryand will not get patronage as the suburban fare is much lower.

We also fail to understand why two metro rail stations are plannedwithin a short distance in Kodambakkam, one at Meenakshi Collegein Arcot Road and the other on Mambalam High Road.

In the recent meeting, a committee of the affected owners was set up to take up the issuewith the authorities concerned.

The committee has also sent an appeal to the Prime Minister.CMRL could have utilized the extensive vacant Southern Railway property near

Kodambakkam Station and Mambalam High Road, instead of displacing families who havebeen living peacefully in the area for almost 50 years..

The residents of this area strongly protest the unilateral decision to acquire the land wherethey have been living for more than three/four generations. S. Pasupathy, VivekanandaStreet, Kodambakkam, Ph: 99620 96929

Govt. directive not followed in property tax revision Sir, In the current revision of property tax, Chennai Corporation is cleverly flouting the Tamil

Nadu Government’s directive that the increase in tax should not be more than 50% forresidential buildings and more than 100% for non-residential properties.

The cap should be on the increase in property tax but not on the parameters used incalculating the new tax, as the Corporation is presently doing.

The government announcement has been clearly stated in newspaper reports of July 24.Going by the numerous letters published in Mambalam Times and other papers and media, itcan be seen that the directive has been followed more in the breach than in observance.

I know a case where the half-yearly property tax on a 16-year-old, 627 sq.ft., 2nd floorresidential flat in West Mambalam has been increased from Rs. 512 to Rs. 4,585 (almost 10times). In the revision notice, the flat has been classified as non-residential, though in the self-declaration form, it was correctly stated as residential.

An appeal has been made by the owner to the designated authority but it has not even beenacknowledged. Adding fuel to the fire, Metrowater Dept. is also jacking up their charges basedon the jump in property tax.

I appeal to the Government to check whether Chennai Corporation is following its directivecorrectly in letter and spirit, and announce the finding openly. The Corporation may be fund-starved but in fairness its actions should be people-friendly and not extortionist. D. Subbaram,18, Thiruvengadam Street, West Mambalam. Ph: 98408 81980

Appeal to clean storm water drains to check mosquito breedingSir, Chennai first needs to be mosquito free before being developed as a Smart City. A few years back, building of storm water drainage system was approved throughout the

city, with the result that over 860 km. of good roads were damaged by digging of both sides andthe work has still not been completed .

Wherever the work has been completed, the drains are misused for dumping garbage, lettingout kitchen waste by a number of restaurants, and also abused by roadside vendors.

In effect, most of the newly laid drains are in unhygienic condition andhave become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and all types of diseases.

Corporation should first take steps to clean up and protect the stormwater drain network.

The public should also cooperate with the Govt. by not misusing thedrain as a garbage dump.

Let us pray for a clean and green Chennai. K. Vaidyanathan,Godsend Apartments, 15/1, North Usman Road, T. Nagar, Ph:2815 6891
